How to tell if condoms fail?

Is it obvious if a condom fails or do they just break? I mean can they leak out the top or anything like that?
Thanks

The most obvious way is a + on your HPT.  (Sorry, too hard to resist teasing.)  Women do write "the condom tore" or "the condom broke," but the most usual condom failure is when it slips off as the man is withdrawing, and some of the liquid from inside contacts the vaginal secretions.  I believe all condom manufacturers actually test each condom by putting them on a metal probe and dipping them into an electrolite solution; if there are pinholes in the rubber or latex or vinyl, the solution will touch the metal and give a signal, and that condom is rejected.  (I read a funny article about this once in Esquire, featuring the women who work on this assembly line of phallic-looking probes with condoms on them.  They say they earn their living "flipping rubbers."  The writer opined they would make great dates.) So probably the pinhole issue is not the risk, if a condom does not actually visibly tear or slip off, you don't have a problem.
