I think I have a yeast infection

Last Monday I had my wisdom teeth taken out and was prescribed some Penicillin to prevent infection. I was feeling fine up until Wednesday. My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex, I've been with him for a year and 6 months and sometimes we have unprotected sex and I've never really had problems. But Wedneday after we were done I went to the washroom and noticed when I urinated it stung a bit and when I wiped there was a very little amount of blood so I just assumed he cut me as this has happened before.
There was no symptoms up until Sunday. I woke up and was very itchy and had a burning at my vagina opening. I've never had a yeast infection before but I looked up the symptoms and talked to the pharamacist who said I should use Monistat the 3 day treatment, pills & creme.
This has only made it worse. The itching and burning have intensified. I have never been this uncomfortable before but I'm worried because the Monistat didn't work. Is this a yeast infection? Or something worse?

I went to the pharamacy and apparently lots of women have problems with the Monostat. She recommended I try the Canesten?(sp) oral tablet and the creme and so far so good.
I wasn't too worried about it being an STI just because this isn't the first time we've had unprotected sex and as I said I was taking Penicillin,
We've also both been checked for STI's and what not.
But thank you both for your comments, really appreciated.

Hello,
It sounds like a yeast infection from what you describe.  Now for some reason Monistat has never, ever worked for me and it seems from what I've read on here it hasn't helped a few others either.  So I wouldn't worry too much yet, but I would go to your doctor to make sure that it is in fact a yeast infection, rule out anything else, and prescribe you something different.  Good luck!
