Is Mefenamic Acid Okay?

by Sparkling, Oct 10, 2009 06:16AM
I'm almost 17 and have always had very heavy periods and severe pain. But now every month it is making me faint, come out in severe sweats and sometimes vomit. I went to my doctor and she suggested mefenamic acid to try. I have a really bad phobia of being sick and just wondered whether anyone has used this drug before and whether they've had any side effects? I'd be grateful for some replies. Thanks. Elspeth.

I've never taken it but I know what is is like to live with sever menstrual cramps and heavy bleeding. My doctor put me on the birth control pill because nothing else worked.

Here is what I found out about mefenamic acid:

Mefenamic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to treat pain, including menstrual pain. It is typically prescribed for oral administration.

Mefenamic acid decreases inflammation (swelling) and uterine contractions by a still unknown mechanism. However it is thought to be related to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.

Since hepatic metabolism plays a significant role in mefenamic acid elimination, patients with known liver deficiency may be prescribed lower doses. Kidney deficiency may also cause accumulation of the drug and its metabolites in the excretory system. Therefore patients suffering from renal conditions should not be prescribed mefenamic acid.

Mefenamic acid is known to cause an upset stomach, therefore it is recommended to take prescribed doses together with food or milk. Instances of drowsiness may also occur. As such, it is recommended to avoid driving or consuming alcohol while taking this medication.

Other known mild side effects of mefenamic acid include headaches, nervousness and vomiting. Serious side effects may include diarrhoea, bloody vomit, blood urine(haematuria.blurred vision, skin rash, itching and swelling, sore throat and fever. It is advised to consult a doctor immediately if these symptoms appear while taking this medication.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may worsen hypertension. Persons with hypertension, left ventricular dysfunction and heart failure may wish to avoid NSAIDs.

Hi Thanks for the reply and the information. :)

I've been on the pill before and I'm fine for a few months and then It starts to make me ill so my doctor wanted to try something else. I tried to put up with the cramps but I've been fainting and vomiting at school and when you tell them its just menstrual cramps they don't believe you. My period effects my life so I want to try this and I want it to work, I'm just absolutely petrified its going to make me sick.

Thanks again. Elspeth.

When I was 17 I was first put on the pill and it made me sicker then I was without it. I was vomiting and having really bad stomach pains all month long. I even gained 50lbs! I finally had enough and stopped. Slowly my periods became painful again and just like you no one believed that everything was caused by cramps.

It took three years of trying everything else I could find (agnus cactus works pretty good and so does evening rose oil) but they eventually got so bad my boyfriend dragged me to the doctor after I was stuck in bed during our anniversary in Austria. She put me on the lowest dosed pill possible and I am now on my third month with little to complain about. I still get cramps but nothing like they were.

I hope you find something that helps you.
