It's me again -- how reliable are home pregnancy tests?

I've taken an EPT now, it came back negative.

Yesterday and today I have felt ill after eating. I don't know what that means. I'm tired it seems like.

I'm going to take another home preg. test today, perhaps two of them. I just can't quit wondering if I am pregnant.

You have all been a wonderful help thus far and I greatly appreciate everything you've said. I'm very glad to have found MedHelp.


So my questions are:

1. How accurate are home preg. tests?
2. How often to false negatives happen?
and
3. Is there one brand of test that is more reliable/trusted than others?

AND..

4. could there be some other reason that I'm yet to get my period since the end of july/beginning of august?

If you are over a month late for your period, a hpt would definately give you a + by now. Have you talked to your dr about being so late? They can do a blood test and then there will be no questions if you are or aren't.

Hi,
You should talk to your Doc about getting blood test because Im at 8weeks according to blood and Ive taken 5 urine test only 2 were positive.

That is confusing, a blood test alone cannot tell you how far along you are.

I agree with the first response, if you are over a month late any HPT should yeild an accurate result. I would also suggest getting in to see your doctor to figure out what is going on.

Definitely don't waste money taking more than one HPT in the same day! I agree with the others- it's time to consult your doctor.

You should see your dr. I was 53 days late and all of the tests I took were BFN so I went to the Dr. and he gave me meds to make my period start.  My cycles were just not coming, it took me a few months but it is finally back to normal.

Yes my Doctor told me he has a patient that all they way up to her 3rd trimester she DID not pass urine pregnancy.  My very test was negative I took EPT a couple of days later I felt really dizzy so I went to my internal med doc this was Friday 8/18. I told em my period was a couple of days late but I took an EPT and was -. He drew blood and my HCG came back the next day saturday 22.6 HCG. I had him fax the results to me. I took the other EPT becuase there are two in a box that same day and it was STILL negative. Im looking at the lab sheet in my hand like how is this possible.  Then 4 days later I took and Accu- something?? That was positive.  Then that following monday I went to an OB office that my internal med doc sent me to and they gave me a urine test although they had my labs from other doc and it was negative.  They just drew my blood instead. My level was up to 113.9 clearly I should have passed a urine test. Finally I came back a 2-3 of days later to see if my level were rising. They did another urine just for grins and that one was positive and my HCG was now up to 296.2.  Sooo Id say get a blood test.

If your hcg is 296 then you ARE pregnant. I am completely confused now. You keep going to different doctors? Are you seeing an OB?

See my sitation is actually very strange. MY LMP was 7/19 right? So I was supposed to start my next cycle 8/16 and Im usally like clockwork. Well ofcourse by the 18th I thought hmm let me take the EPT and ofcourse like I said before it was -. Then still later that day I went to my internal med doc cause I was feeling awful, faint weird just off! So thats when I got the first blood HCG done. Well Monday 8/21 I was bleeding like I misscarried. Clots, tissue globs of red blood. (sorry for the details) I actuallyl assumed I misscarried. But my intern wanted me to f/u with an OB anyway. So of course when I kept gettin the - urines I thought yep must have misscarried but when the blood came back the doc was like well either my body hasnt figured out i misscarried, or I didnt or even more weird I may have been carrying twins and lost one!!? WHAT!? So they kept making me take blood test every 2 or 3 days. and it has been going up every since. My last HCG check was 9/5 and it was 542.6 my pogesterone was 14.60. I am seeing a chief of OB he says that Im an carrying a viable fetus. Although when i was 5weeks they gave me a US and didnt see or hear anything so they were still thinking i misscarried or the baby was in my tube but the chief said my levels would not be doubling if the baby was in my tubes and according my to HCG levels the baby is simply to small to as yet. You have to be atleast 1200 mIU to see the baby. So this coming friday I get an US again because I should be well over 1200 by then. And friday happens to be my bday so confirmation that my bean is still there would be the best present ever!!!

I'm confused. I thought blood tests would detect the hormones early along. I hope that your case is a really rare one. I took a blood test today, and get the results back at 4:00. I'm simply panicky. They only took a quantitative and not a qualitative (I thought that both would be taken?). I am going to make sure to ask if this is it because I didn't think this agony of not  knowing would be prolonged any longer!

Oh no I got blood all of my blood was confirmed pregnancy. My urines were coming out -.  I thought I misscarried but apparently I didnt my levels are still going up as though I am carrying a viable fetus!! I even have the prego symptoms very SORE breast. Nasty taste in my mouth, I can smell fortune cookies all the way in China LOL!! I wish I had a bucket instead of going to bathroom every 1 or 2 hours at nite its sooo annoying. The list goes on being pregnant is a major body changing event. I want to call my mother and thank her. Its a lot more going on than I ever imagined.

Does any one know anything about the tests you can get on the internet at wholesale?  I ordered 20 for about $16.oo, this is really cheap, does this mean they are not realiable?  They say you can test before you miss a period, does anyone know how soon would be safe?
