Just Wondering

by AshW, Dec 04, 2005 12:00AM
My sister in law is pregnant with her fourth girl. They were really hoping for a boy this time. I was told by a friend of mine that there is a genetic disorder that can enable someone from producing a certain gender. Is this true? If so do you know where i can find out information about it
thank you

I've never heard of that.  I guess it could be true, but it sounds like a myth to me.

The sex of a fetus is determined by the chromosomes of the male sperm cell at conception.  Yet both female and male's develop the same until a certain age in the womb and then the Y-chromosome starts to change the development of the fetus to "male".  It is up to the chromosomes and how they are paired....either XX (female) or XY (male).  I have never heard of a genetic disorder that caused a couple to have a certain sex of children (females only or males only).  Its up to the chromosomes.  Maybe genetic counceling could tell why a couple could only have females.

I don't know if there is a medical reason why they only have 1 sex. My dad was desperate for a girl and had 7 boys with his first wife before he married my mother and they had me. I also have a cousin that has 5 girls and is desperate for a boy.

Im not sure what it is called but some women can not carry a certain sex, it may have something to do with the X and Y chromosones from the mother and father
I have a friend who has only girls and she cant carry a boy

I have an Aunty that can only carry boys to full term.  She has had many miscarriages in the atempt to have children and has ended up with 2 healthy boys.  Doctors have told her that her miscarriages were all girls and she is unable to carry a girl to full term :( I don't know what the condition is called but it can happen.  Has your Sister Inlaw had any miscarriages?
