LONG periods...and I mean long!

I have been on my period since 27th August 2005. It is heavy to the extent that I have to use three of the thickest sanitry towels at once and change them every hour. I also lose lots of clots and when I say clots I mean clots - large and dark and they look like flesh! My GP says this is 'normal' for the flow of my period. This has been going on for two years now, and Ive been told I have Polycystic Ovaries, then I get told I dont have it, Im just fat!

As for the clots, I get them too and I know many women who do... BUT - Your bleeding is not normal.  The fact that you have not stopped since August and the amount which you describe should be looked into.  I would seek a second opinion by another doctor and hopefully they will be able to get to the bottom of what is going on.

Do you see a GP or a GYN?  I believe a GYN would think about
you trying birth control pills to help regulate your bleeding.
Too much bleeding can cause anemia.  I would get a second
opinion.  Your doctor sounds kind of wacko or crazy to me.

Bleeding that long, or that much is never normal.  Usually the standard is clots larger than a quarter, or going through a pad per hour--and you obviously are doing this.  I would see a GYN, not a GP.  I can't believe your doc hasn't referred you already.  Please don't waste time...make an appt soon with a gynecologist.

Well i know a little about Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.... I have it myself.... and sometimes with this you will bleed like that.... but your dr. should definitly put you on something to help that.... there is help!! i promise!!! My best friend has it also and has had the constant AF like you and she was put on birth control to help that... and also another medication.. i will ask her what is and let you know....

above didn't completely make sense--
what I meant to say was the standard for knowing when you're bleeding too much--
You're obviously bleeding too much.  Sorry I was confusing.

Thanks for replying everyone! A bit more info to make the pic more clearer...
I am not only seeing my GP, I have a GYN and a Dietician too. I also had to go and see an Endocrinologist - dont ask, I have no idea what for - all he said was that I was over weight and had to go on a diet - which I am on now. He also said he cannot do anything about the excessive hair growth, acne or mood swings due to me having more 'male' hormone in my blood than 'female' hormone.
My GP said the same, and has said she can not do anything about the bleeding because Im over weight - Im 5ft4 and size 20 (17 stone). She said when I have lost the weight she can put me on contraceptive pills to stop the bleeding and get my periods back to normal! Define normal, Ive been bleeding for so long that this is normal to me, lol!
The GYN said he wanted me to be tested for PCOS...I was and it came back normal.
Over the past two years I have had 22 smears, 17 scans, 13 internals, given 8 blood tests and 8 urine samples...and I am told they have all tested 'normal'.
I have all the symptoms of PCOS, but no one is confirming whether I have it or not. And as for the diet, my GP said, and I quote; 'if you have got PCOS Dawn, your over weight is caused by that, and we cant treat you for PCOS until youve lost the weight.'
I asked if she meant that if I have PCOS I cant lose weight as Im overweight because I have PCOS, and if I dont lose weight I cant be treated for the PCOS. She said yes!

No one, however has said, Miss Folan your test results show positive for PCOS. No one has said there is anything wrong with me, they just keep sending me for tests after tests after tests, all of which stay normal!

Like I said before I am on a diet, and have been since the 10th Feb, I also gave up smoking then too, and started exercising more. Im doing everything I can to help myself, but the medical people arent. I feel like a medical guinea-pig banging my head against a brick wall.
More than anything else, I want to be able to have a family, and I cant help thinking that if I have PCOS or anything else for that matter, or the longer Ikeep going on like this without anything being treated, Im not going to be able to have the family I dream of. Im not greedy, I only want one baby! :o(

Umm, yeah I've been going through this throughout my life, but it has gotten worst.

Ever since I was young I had long periods of at least two and a half weeks max.  Later the doctors kept urging me to lose weight.  Slowly it continued to become worst to max one month, one week break and flow for another month.  I developed anemia and low blood pressure.  More and more pills the doctors gave me.  Even multiple tests, and I'm just simply fine.  The only thing they said was I have more male hormones than female.  If that's the case how come I have big breasts?!

Anyways, I understand what you are going through because I have no cysts, no stds, even my blood pressure is fine... I'm just highly overweight, actually higher than obese.  I've reached to 315lbs now and I'm 5'2"...

So, If you really want to know the truth... My theory is, that it is like they said.  Hormonial imbalance possibly caused by weight gain.  Reguardless, I am no doctor, but the losing of weight this could be a good idea for the both of us.  No guarentees.

The only thing thing I can say is good luck with the weight loss.  One thing I know is my family is known for having some type of cancer that they have to remove their uterus.  So check about that as well.

I've been on my period since Jan. 10th, I dunno when it will end.  Good luck and stay proactive about your health.  Wish me luck as well.
