This is going to be kinda long (sorry!) but I want to make sure I explain everything correctly for you.
Ok, so first I wanted to let you know about some other websites that might be of help to you. www.cafemom.com has a trying to conceive group that has amazing ladies who know alot about trying to conceive. I am a member of that group also. Another great site is ******************* which will help you understand about fertility and figuring out when you ovulate. You really need to know when you ovulate in order to become pregnant. Every month there is a 25% chance of a women becoming pregnant (even when you know when you ovulate.) Without ovulation you can NOT become pregnant. Once an egg is released (ovulation) you have 24-48hrs to fertilize it otherwise it dies and then you wait until your next ovulation to try again. www.knowmycycle.com is another great site that can help explain how your period works and ovulation. That site has a cycle calender that will help you keep track of your periods. Also check out www.ovulation-calculator.com it shows you how to track ovulation
Now let me explain the phases of a period. Your period has mainly two phases. The follicular phase which is from the 1st day of your period until you ovulate(release your egg). Ovulation usually occurs 14 days before your next period. The luteal phase is from ovulation until the 1st day of your next period. A normal Luteal phase is 14 days but it can be as long as 16 days or as short as 11 days. Anything more or less and you can run into fertility problems. If you DON'T ovulate, you can NOT get pregnant. Like I said before you only have 24-48hrs to have your egg fertilized. There are many different ways you can track ovulation.
Ok, now about ovulation pain also known as mittelschmerz and ovulation spotting. Mittelschmerz happens to about 20% of women and usually only on one side(ovary). Ovulation spotting happens to less than 20% of women. Ovulation spotting will be very little (mainly when you wipe) and will be a brownish/pink color. Even though it is very rare it can happen.
I'm only able to guess when you ovulated because your periods are irregular. For a cycle that is between 29-33 days long your ovulation (fertile) time would be between Sept 4th-Sept 13th. Did you have intercourse at all during that time? If you did there is a 25% chance that you could be pregnant. If not, then there is no chance of becoming pregnant. Normally you have a 5 day window of becoming pregnant, 4 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation. The reason you have the wide range of dates is because of the irregularity of your periods so there is no way to pinpoint ovulation without temping, charting, or ovulation tests. It is best to have intercourse everyday during that time but every other day is ok too.
Lets say you did have intercourse during that time then the absolute earliest you could possibly get a positive hpt would be Sept 20th. Your next period should show up around Sept 22- Sept26th. If you get a neg on the hpt test on the 20th wait until Sept 27th to see if your period shows up, if it doesn't show up by then test again. Make sure when you do a hpt you use your first morning urine because that will have the highest concentration of hcg.
Just so you know, implantation occurs anywhere from 7-10 days after an egg has been fertilized. After implantation is when hcg starts to become present in your body. So until implantation(egg attaching to uterus) you can NOT get a positive pregnancy test.
So all in all I think what you just experience was ovulation bleeding. It is rare but sometimes it does happen. It doesn't mean there is anything wrong. I hope I've helped. Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!! If you have any more questions feel free to ask and I will try and answer them. :-)

How typically long are your cycles? Do you know when you ovulated? The spotting could be from ovulating or if you have already ovulated it could be implantation bleeding. I know sometimes when I ovulate I have a small pain in my ovory with spotting. I would wait to take another test once AF is late. Sometimes it takes awhile for hcg to build up in your urine. If AF still doesn't show up I and you had a bfn I would wait and test again in a few days. GL and SSBD!
