Loestrin 30 - How long to become effective

Recently I started taking Loestrin 30, as prescribed by my doctor. I was wondering if anyone knew how long it took to become effective, I've took 8 days worth so far. Me and my boyfriend had sex last night and I was wondering would be better off going to get the 72 hour pill?
