MIRENA can it cause odor?

I am 25 yrs old and never had a child.  I had been on bcpills for years and had to get a Mirena/iud, in september 05 due to having high blood pressure. I am married (so no multiple partners) but recently I have noticed after intercourse I have a discharge w/ bad odor. I have also been having light 2-week periods. I had called my gyno about the odor and got a rx and it went away, and now it has returned. When I 1st got the odor I thought that it could be possibly due to my husband and I having the flu or the 2 week period that I had just got over.  Could any one please help me w/my concern?  I have thought that my husband had cheated and gave me a std but I am unsure.  Please help. thx.

Thank you so much for your question. I am so afraid of going to the doctor about this issues because they will think I am cheating or my husband is cheating on me, I had the mirena inserted a year ago ever since I've been having the cramps from hell, brown greenish and watery discharge I have to have a liner everyday. You bath more than once a day, it is disgusting . I thought I was the only one with the problem thank you. I am removing it for sure

I know this was posted a bit ago but I hope my response helps someone. I had the strange smell too. Almost like I had a yeast infection but with no other side effects for 2 weeks. (I have had it in for about a month now so there's that) I was very upset and worried about the smell and then I started adding probiotics to my diet trying to help that whole area. Wait for it .......AND THE SMELL WENT AWAY. I added it in in a powered form in a smoothie (I just go to tropical smoothie cafe). However if I don't do this after a couple days the smell slowly returns, at least for me. So I will be purchasing my own stash of probiotics now. Try adding them in and see if there is a positive outcome :) all the luck with everyone struggling with this.

I have had my mirena removed for exactly one year (May 2015). The smell has lessened considerably, but there are still remnants of the odor after sex. Its the worst! Going to try some acidophilus as someone suggested.
I knew i wasn't trippin and take pride in having good hygiene, and not using scented protects and detergents that can change my Ph balance. I've been changing my underwear because of that "trashy" smell.Someone described that smell perfectly.I haven't had vaginal issues up until the Mirena was inserted after child birth. (while still in labor room)I read it wasn't recommended right after but the resident doctor went ahead and inserted it.Does the no hormone IUD cause the same issues?Paraguard? My doctor told me to give it 3- 6 mos for the bleeding to stop, now i need to tell her about the odor. I've been either bleeding or having a weird discharge from the Mirena.I am uncomfortable and making an appointment because there is no way I can carry on normally.I take showers for a reason lol.Not to take one and smell that and hour or so later. How embarrassing.
See your ob/gyn about it for sure, you don't want to be ignoring an infection. There are other forms of birth control.

Thank you so much for the advice. I've had a period everyday for the last 5 months and the foul odor. I have every product Summer's Eve has made and I still smell. It's so embarrassing! I made an appointment to have it removed ASAP after reading these comments.

Yes. Mirena does cause odor. The smell is actually pretty bad and very noticeable. Smells like trash. I take a shower twice a day and the odor just keeps coming back. After sex the smell is strong, pretty embarrassing. At one point I thought it was my ex man or a infection but no. I been single now and haven't had sex for few months and the same smell is still there. Then I tried different soaps but nothing made a difference. It even smells beyond your clothes! I eat clean and wash well so I know it's definitely Mirena, let me not get started with the discharge smh... I will be removing next month. I do not recommend. Weight gain is a definite.

Another success story--- I had the Mirena inserted 6 weeks after I delivered my son, March 2012. I had it for 2 years without any problems. Around New Year's 2014, I started noticing the terrible odor. I honestly thought my ex had given me an STD, but after a visit to the local health department, I had to cross that off my list of potential reasons. I stopped wearing underwear, as that seemed to trap the smell and make it worse. It was putrid- Kind of a chemical smell. Definitely not a natural smell. I had never had problems in the past with odor and it was extremely embarrassing. I finally got my Mirena out in December 2015. I am EXTREMELY happy to report that the smell is totally gone! I am back to my normal self. I did experience some serious emotional withdrawal type symptoms for about 2 weeks after I had it removed. Some vomiting/nausea the day immediately after removal and some serious mood swings/grumpiness, but I have since mellowed out. I noticed some other threads about this on different websites talking about 'coming out of a fog'... I totally understand what they mean now. I seem to be thinking clearer and am happier than I have been in a long time.

It's very disturbing to me that neither of the doctors I visited for insertion/removal mentioned these type of side effects. I was never told about odor, random back pain or excessive acne before insertion AND I was never talked to about the 'Mirena Crash' or withdrawal type symptoms that are common after removal. This needs to be remedied... I would have thought twice about getting an IUD if I had known I would potentially feel gross or unwanted because of my body's chemical changes. I have seen comments on here & other websites where women have said the odor issue ruined their relationships & marriages. I feel for them and will NEVER recommend Mirena or another IUD to another woman, EVER. It's not worth the convenience. I'd rather have this annoying alarm on my phone every day to remember to take my pill.

I am so happy I found this thread!!!! Im a VERY hygienic person (2 showers daily, feminine spray, douching, you name it). Ive had my mirena for 3.5 years, and I have had this odor issue, discharge, and weight gain for the past 3 years, and it seems to be getting worse! Ive gained 40 lbs total, and I swear I cant even take a pee without gagging at the smell! Its so embarrassing!!! I thought I was going crazy! Im married, and my husband is the sweetest, but we  are also very open with each other, and even HE asks me to shower before any intimacy! We want baby number 2 soon anyway, so Im getting this devil device out ASAP!!!!!!

I'm so happy I found this!! At first I thought it was because of sex but I had sex about 2 months ago and got smelly odors 2 days ago. Think it is my mirena?

Just had the mirena removed asked about the smell and was told it's a your hp levels that make the smell plus if you have a brown discharge with it you could have an infection. Tell your gp thay will give you antibiotics for it. If it carries on thay will take the mirena out.

It is March, 2015 and I have the same problem! I have had mirena for around 10 months. After a painful insertion, I didn't have many symptoms. After around 5 months, my period slowly went away. I thought mirena really was a miracle! Little did I know that I would be writing this post nearly a year later. I have been having awful, rotten, smelly, fishy, whitish, tan, sometimes pinkish, sometimes a little bloody odor that won't go away. It has been about 2 months and I have tried everything! RePhresh pills just seemed to make it worse, I tried bathing in diluted vinegar, I tried vaginal cleansers, avoided panties every time I could, and even went to my doctor and got tested for BV and other STDs. Everything came back negative! A month later I still have this smell. I think that I'm going to save myself the time and the money and just go back to the pill. Men have no idea what it's like to have a *****!

All of these comments were super helpful. I have only had mirena for about 3-4 months and I am experiencing the worst odor. I too can smell it all the time and it is so embarrassing to think that other people can smell it as well. I have seen some weight gain too, despite eating clean and staying active. I just scheduled an appointment with my OBGYN.

reading all these comments and on several sites/blogs, I want to cry - I  should've known it was my body telling me something was wrong with this mirena. I kept just trucking on apologizing to my husband for the "not so fresh feeling" - lol. About 3 years of Mirena but the last yr has been the worst, it's like the bad symptoms just build up until you know its the culprit and you just want it out! Making appt tomorrow to have this evil thing removed. I too have gained weight, especially in the last yr and 1/2, horrible stink amonia/fishy you name it. My poor hubby telling me I'm ok, it's ok, but I knew it wasnt. Boy will he be happy once I feel and smell sexy again, maybe even lose some weight. And not to mention my self-esteem boost; soo looking forward to the new me. Old fashioned Pill, here I come. I have to take thyroid meds every am so what's another pill going to do. I feel so robbed, so embarrassed, so stupid for letting the Mirena mess with my insides, they belong to me and not it - Never insert any IUD, i'm convinced our bodies reject them and cause us to lose ourselves slowly until we regain the upperhand.

I just had my Mirena inserted after removing my copper IUD about three weeks ago. The foul odor started as soon as it was inserted and hasn't stopped. This is awful.

I've had it for 8 years now.   I love it.  I have not had a period since I got it.   Yes I do experience an odor, especially after sex        No weight gain for me.   It is definitely worth it I think.

I know this was written last year but SO SO glad to read things on this forum. I thought I was going NUTS! I had the Mirena put in jut over a month ago and have not stopped bleeding for one day!!!!!! I am experiencing everything you mentioned, especially with the tampon. I went straight back to the Drs and he gave me metrondizole vaginal gel (not sure if correct spelling) to use over 5 days. I still have not used this because I have not stopped bleeding and it said not to use when bleeding. My problem was only when I removed the tampon, I could smell this odor and I HATE IT!!!!! I can honestly say that 'my flower" ;) has never been stinky and even when I would touch myself to remove the tampon, I could smell it on my hands also...GROSS! I have made an appt to get it removed as I also gained weight and unable to shed the extra pounds...talk about feeling insecure and uncomfortable with ones body. I am a single mother of 4 and have a great chance of having another date with a guy that I like and enjoy being with and I'll be damned if I have this going on for fear of him running away...I will NEVER do this again!!

I have had the Mirena since about 2000 continuously. I knew I didn't like the smell, but I was so young, and have had it for so long I didn't even know what was normal. A friend was considering using the Mirena and asked about it smelling. That's when I decided to search and I found all of your posts. I think I'll have it removed and see how that goes. Thank you all for being so honest.

I thought I was CRAZY!!  Ive only had mirena for 3months n I wish I could rip it out already. My doctor said this is a good 1st attempt at helping with my HORRIBLE periods due to large fibroids. My options were bc even though I had a tubal almost 4 yrs ago, ablasion or partial hysterectomy. Now im trying to decide which is worst; the disgusting odor that never goes away, the brown discharge all month long & the lack of sex drive or passing tennis ball size clots and bleeding through my clothes each month.

Has anyone other thanThesnarkyone noticed that their boyfriends have said their taste has changed? I don't (yet! Thank god!) have the bad odour, but I have noticed that I smell different...and my boyfriend I'm sure has noticed.Sour is the best way I can describe it, almost metallic, but definitely sour. I know it may be too much information, but he always told me that I tasted sweet, and now I'm so ashamed and paranoid about my boyfriend doing anything to me because I'm not myself. Has anyone else had this issue? Also, did anyone else start retaining water like crazy when their period was due (period hasn't come yet)? I would be immensely grateful for any help!

Thank God for this post and the brave woman who first posed the question. I too am experiencing a foul odor (it seriously smells like garbage or like something crawled up in there and died) since having the Mirena IUD inserted about two years ago. At first, I thought I was crazy and that it was all in my head, but this proves there's a connection. I have also experienced weight gain, acne, terrible cramping, lower back pain, abdominal pain and even had an ovarian cyst that eventually burst on it's own -- very painful. I am calling my doctor first thing in the morning and making an appointment to have this thing removed.

I had mine put in like 8 months ago.  My period was lighter, but lasted two weeks....and the WORST part is the SMELL!!   It is disgusting, embarrassing and just completely a hit to my confidence because I feel like I smell for the two weeks or my irregular period!   I'm so happy that I now know this is very common. I'm calling tomorrow to get it removed ASAP!!!  Thank you for your post!!!
