Menopause Question

by jenniferolivebridge, Nov 29, 2006 12:00AM
Hey there - this question is for my mom. She has been going through menopause and hasnt had AF for a few years now. This past week she got a very heavy AF and it hasnt stopped! It has lasted 9 days now and she says its very heavy.

Her doctor scheduled an appointment for her for December 14th - which i think is much too far off, espcecially since it isnt stopping.

What could be causing the bleeding? Can she insist that they see her right away?

thanks in advance!

If I were bleeding heavily for a large number of days no matter what the reason, I would insist on being seen as an emergency appointment.  Failing that, I'd go to another doctor, and failing that, I'd go to the emergency room.  In the meantime, I'd also take iron.  There is a good kind called "Slow Fe" that is a time-release iron supplement, also there is Geritol.  Don't let her sit back with a "the doctor is always right" attitude about it, she might have a fibroid that is bleeding or something else like that, and she should be seen.

I agree - December 14 is too long to wait if she's continuing to bleed heavily.  Is there another doctor within her doctor's group who might be able to see her earlier?  I would encourage her to call back and demand to get in earlier, or else try to find another doctor.  Iron pills was a good suggestion!
