My Cholesterol Is Threw The Roof!! (open)

PGB
Got my blood work back Tuesday and the nurse didn't give me the numbers, but she said my cholesterol and triglycerides(sp) are REALLY high and suggested a cholesterol lowering diet.  Help me out here.  I was going to post this on the Nutrition Forum, but nobody has posted over there since sometime in October and I was afraid no one would see it.

Keep in mind that I live in a VERY small town in the deep south and don't really want to drive 40 miles to a large super market just to pick up the ingredients for dinner if you know what I mean.  Thanks and feel free to use this as an open forum.

Just had to comment on the oatmeal...My mom reminds me regularly that my great grandfather ate oatmeal for breakfast everyday and lived to be 93. He also bowled on a league up until a few days before he died. Healthy as a horse until the end. What a guy!

My son loves the stuff. I make mine with water and it is edible (especially with a little Splenda added). My mom makes hers with milk and it is GROSS!!

I agree that steel cut oats have a different texture.  Scottish oats are thicker too and are wonderful!  Try making them with less water if you don't like the sliminess.  Try to stay away from the pre-packaged stuff, if you can.  It is processed, which makes it lose a lot of it's benefits.  Adding your own favorite fruit or other ingredients will help too.  Also, cinnamon is supposed to be great for reducing cholesterol.  There are cinnamon capsules you can buy in a health food store, or order on-line, if you don't have a hfs near-by.  Google cinnamon lowering cholesterol on your computer, if you want to read about it.  Good luck.

I have a similar problem.  My cholesterol is actually a good range its 150, but my triglycerides are over 400.  It's hereditary (unfortunately), I was told to start taking 1500mg of omega-3 to lower the triglycerides.  Maybe this will help.

I will check into the oatmel bars, I have never tried them.  Maybe I could do that since they wouldn't mushY (yuck).  And I will also look for the Omega 3. I know I could handle a pill better than the slime.  Thanks guys!

Okay, I just read your first post again, and let me tell you my thoughts on oatmeal.  YUCK!!  GROSS!!  GAG!!  Do I need to go on?  My 9 year old eats Maple & Brown Sugar oatmeal for breakfast EVERY morning.  He has for about the last 6 or 7 years.  Makes me gag just to fix his because of the smell. (Chills running up and down my spine at the thought of putting that junk in my mouth.)

Has anyone tried the irish steel-cut oats? I don't like oatmeal either, the gloppy texture gets me everytime, but I can actually eat the steel-cut oats. The oats are cut bigger, so it doesn't turn into mush. I like to put a little milk, smart balance and a few raisins. It's good with fresh fruit too.

It's too bad you can't eat oatmeal because it is GUARANTEED to lower your BAD cholesterol if you eat a bowl every morning! I did it and it worked! Maybe you could subtitute with an oatmeal bar. I think Quaker makes them too. Maybe you could stomache that?

Hey, i'm here!! i'll talk to ya! i hear ya about the driving 40 miles just to get to a larger supermarket, i am in a very small town too,and that is about what i drive to get to walmart, grocery store ect.,and even with the long drive, it still saves me money, because the items are all cheaper than it would be if i just ran into town.

Maybe start small, like start having oatmeal for breakfast, just buy one of those huge tubs of it,and maybe try grilling your meat and what not.

Hey PB&Jelly!  I know this truly sucks, I went on a Gluten free diet.  It was rough at first, but in 30 days my chol was 140 and my triglycerides 79.  I can't remember the other two off hand, but they were normal.  We are leaving to go to the deer lease in a couple of hours...weeeeeeee. Can you tell I'm excited?  Trying to be supportive of my fiance.  Plus there's great shopping near by...and the holidays are coming up.  Anyway, when I get home, I have alot of info I can give you.  I am sure there are easier ways to do it, but it was fast and I didn't have to go to specialty stores for anything.  Oh...and I lost 19 pounds in 30 days too.

Shawn

I know we aren't supposed to put email on here, but here's mine anyway....spresnell  at hotmail dot com

I typed it like that so it won't be caught!
