No period in 4 months, not preg

No period in 4 months, not preg

Well, I haven't had a period since April 25 of this year. All of my pregnancy tests come out negative, even the one blood test I took with my primary physician. I went to a specialist and she prescribed me some medicine that will bring down my period but told me not to take them until I get another blood test with the results just to make sure I'm not pregnant. I haven't gone to get the bloodtest yet and It's been about 2 weeks since i've seen the doctor, I'm scared of what might be going on with me. I'm healthy and other than now, have never been late with my period. Has this happened to anyone b4? Have any advice, or think you might know what may be going on here?

How old are you may i ask??
im 20 and My period is also irregular has stopped for years at a time. I went to the doctors twice and he said there was nothing to be worried about. There are possible reasons for this, maybe a cyst or something. Fortunately you have a doc thats willing to find out a cause, my doc just looks at me as if im crazy for coming to the doctors and stares at me untill i walk out.
just sit back and relax unless they find something

I am in a similar situation.  I have checked out so many websites and none of them pertain to my situation.  Please share whatever you find out.  The only thing that has helped me to menstruate has been taking Vitex.  Within 48 hours of taking Vitex I can feel mild cramps.

I just turned 22 this week. The medicine that my doc prescribed for me is call Provena. Also, if your doc won't help you investigate what is going on with your body, don't be afraid to seek a second and third opinion if need be. At the end of the day it is your body. I never just "go with" whatever the doc says if I know I feel a certain way. For example, my mother went in eraly this year for a mamogram (mammogram) and they told her they found some lumps but that they looked benign. She didn't take their word for it, and went abd had a second opinion only to find out she had breast cancer and needed a double mastectomy!! I'm not saying this to scare you, just to tell you to be more attentive to your personal health.

I will keep you all posted if any new developments arrise or if I find out anything else, i know how frustrating and perplexing this thing is!!

Hi! I am 21 years old and this is the 6th month I have gone with out a period. It really sucks and makes you feel like you are not a woman! (that is how it feels to me!) and I assure you you are! I have been to the doctor the last time this happened (almost a year) and he gave me some pills to encourage my period to start. It took ten days exactly for it to come and it was very very very Heavy! From my advice you REALLY need to make sure that your blood pregnancy test is negitive... The pills that your doctor gave you could kill or harm the baby if take them during pregnancy. After I took my ten pills I started right when I was supposed to. It obviously makes you VERY fertile afterwards, because I got pregnant a couple days after my period ended. We are going to try not to get pregnant when we go to the doctor this time for my ten day pill supply, because my son was born with a birth defect called gastroschisis (his bowels were on the outside). I think that the pill might have caused it! I am not for sure so dont think that if you get pregnant after this pill, that your child is going to have a birth defect, because I am NOT a doctor and it is just my personal guess! Anymore questions let me know!

Thanks so much Laur. I went on 9/7/06 to have my blood drawn and I guess they should have those results for me in a few days. I just want to start having a epriod, I feel really yucky!!! Like my face is all broken out and oily and I've alrady gained like 7 vanity pounds. When I went to the doc they said that's normal because of all the estrigen in my system. I just really hope that I can take those pills and start my period soon. Did the doctors ever tell you why they thought you had stopped your period, or was it just one of those things that they didn't have an answer for? And was the period extreemly painfull as well once you took the ten pills?

No it was not a painful period. It was just really really heavy and I didnt think it was ever going to stop!! I have never really had painful periods though. No, the doctor could not tell me what was going on with me? I guess that is one thing that researchers need to go over? It has really left me at a loss. I dont know what to tell my girlfriends or my husband. I just have to say I dont have a period sometimes???? I started my period when I was almost 17 years old! That isnt exactly normal.. I have always kinda felt left out. But what is funny is when it is here I want it to go away! I have done some research on something called AMENNOREAH (I think that is how you spell it?) you should do some website jumping and read more about it! It might help you out a little. I know it did me!

Thanks Laur!! And that's great about your period!!! I plan to have my period this week one way or another!!! Once i get blood results back, which i'm almost possitive will be negative for pregnancy, I'm filling my prescription and taking those pills to bring down my period. I can't take it anymore ;p Thanks for the advice though. I will def look up that Amenoreah thing. Thanks ;)

Hey, well i was in the same situation until last month which was the 1st time i had my period from April, i was perscribed Provera, to bring it on and it did, but i'm trying to have a baby, My gyno has perscribed me clomiphine to stimulate the ovaries, all i know is after taking the provera i had really bad peroid pain and it came back with a vengence, I have a really good gyno and if u are trying to concieve (conceive), i've been through a lot of pelvic ultrasounds (internal) cause it's the best way to see what's going on and i have had an x-ray that shows whether my falliopian tubes are blocked or not, but they wern't so i'm now at day 15 of my cycle and hopefully from taking the clomiphine i have ovulated and maybe i will be pregnant but i'm not keeping my hopes up as i have to have a blood test to see if i did ovulate and whether the dosage of clomiphene need to be made higher, But i will keep you informed

Hi, 2 years ago I went off the birth control pill because I became aware of how harmful it is to your health. After a year of no period, I went to a homeopath who gave me these little hormone pills. After a couple of months I got my period and stopped taking the pills. I got my period 2 more times - lighter and lighter with each month - and now nothing again. I'm doing a candida cleanse at the moment, as I've heard this helps sort out imbalances... fingers tightly crossed!

Everyday its on my mind, I mean, how can we not think about something like that?...Ya know? I mean, can a lot of sex stop a period? I am in a relationship, and yes we do have  sex, a lot..but could that prevent a period from coming? If anyone can help, please....let me know something. OH, and Im also getting cramps too every now and then like it wants to come, but nothing. I think last month their was like 2 drops of blood in the toilet, so I used a tampon and 2 hours later, their was nothing on it:( Its so stressful and I wish somone could relate....

I am in the same situo, I am 24 and went off the pill last november, I had my last period in Jaunary and nothing since. My doc said it may take a while to become regular....but this is plain annoying....my skin has turned to ****....like pimples for miles....i am not underweight....my bmi is 20, which healthy....I was never regular before I went on the pill, but not 4 months. I am intrested to hear more about the homopath remedies mentioned by Tasymn. The thing i am most worried about is not being able to have kids in a few years time, it really concerns me. I have in the last few days started taking a pill called Maca, it is a natural pill that helps to balance hormones! I am willing to try anything really, not having a period on a regular basis is messing with my skin and moods....I am tempted to go back onto the pill just maintain my monthy periods, yes i know i could be in the same situo in a few years time, but for crying out loud its on my mind 24/7 and driving me crazy!

I just turned 23 and have stopped taking the pill in late January and have still not seen any sign of a period!  I went to the ob a month ago and she said its either because of low body weight ( which i am rather small i weigh 96 lbs, and am 5 7' but ive always been tiny my whole family is just naturally thin) but i think its when she said that my body is just lying dormant that i freaked out!  DORMANT who wants to hear that, especially when your trying to get pregnant.  She wants me to take all these tests to rule out other conditions, however she wants me to start taking hormone pills to start a menstrual cycle which im not keen on at all, so i dont know what to do. Im just like all of you, terribly stressed and just wanting to be NORMAL!! whatever that is.

I'm also 36 and have not had a period for close to 4 months.  Hormone tests say that i'm perimenopausal.  I'm freaking out too but you should look into it. I'm hoping it's reversable cause I think Im still alittle too young to be going through menopause.

I am 18 years old and i havent had my period since march. For the past two years i have had irregular periods but i have never gone this long. At least once a month i have, i guess you would call it "spotting", but its a very dark color, almost like a brown. I have mild cramps every once in a while like my period wants to come, but it never does. I have taken two preg. tests in may, and two in june, and they were all negative. I dont know what to do. I researched ammenorrhea and ovarian cancer and my symptoms dont match up. I dont have an obgyn or a doctor. I dont know what to do. My boobs are tender, but i really dont have anything like moods swings or food cravings. Its comforting to know that im not the only one who is going through this, but i would still just like to be normal again. If anyone can help, please do so. Also, when i do have my period i have extremely painful cramps for the first two days, and then for the rest of period im fine.

Im also worried because my boyfriend and i are also talking about having a baby either by the end of this year or the beginning of the next one and im worried that i might not be able to get pregnant. We have tried before and i have never been able to get pregnant so im worried that i still wont be able to when we are ready. does anyone know what i can do to become more fertile or make me have my periods?

hiya girls just been reading some of your comments...

I used to have really light periods like just 1 hr bleeding a very light pinky colour. the last 2 years i was going to doct asking if this was normal together with a very sharp pain inside that only lasts for a few seconds. they always said it's normal not to worry. then 3months ago i had a smear test. 3 months later i'm booked for a radical hysterectomy. i'm only 26 and no childrens so really sad e depressed as this was my bigest dream to have a family.
all i'm saying girls is always make sure you insist with the doctors to do more tests.
if my cancer was found out last year i would be fine now i would be able to have my baby.

I am 22.  I havent had a period since January 4th.  In that time span I was pregnant for 6 weeks, then had a miscarrage (miscarriage) and a d&c.  My d&c was on 4-16-08.  I still havent had a period, and my OBGYN is telling me I have to wait until October before she will do anything for it.  I am freaking out because I have a family history of different types of cancer.  I am now having sharp pains, and bleeding during/after intercourse.  I would love to have my period so I can get pregnant.

Hello All.
I'm also 22, and stopped taking my birth control in February.  My last period lasted for 4 days at the end of Feb., and I have not had one since. Over 6 months later!  I have abstained from sex for quite some time, so pregnancy is not an option.  I had a physical in May, and the doctor said that my lack of menstruation was normal...but that was only a couple months without it.

I have had a history with ruptured ovarian cysts, which are by far the MOST PAINFUL things to have to go through.  I had them twice within a year, but have not experienced them since...both while I was taking BC.  The kind I had I believe were hemorrhagic cysts.  Dealing with those again would be pure hell.

Before getting on BC as a freshman in college, my periods were very irregular and often non-existent.  I chalked it up to being a very active athlete (athletic amenorrhea); but as a college grad with a decreased level of activity than before, I just pray that something is not wrong with me.  My worst fears: ovarian cancer or endometriosis. I know I could probably just go back on the pill, but like everyone else, I wonder if the same thing will happen again down the line if I go off once more...

Hey all I have been reading some of the comments because as most of you I am scared.  I am 25 years old and just go off the pill the second to last week of April.  My husband was home for four the last week of April before his deployment.  I took two preg test in May they were negative.  Two in June and one in July all negative.  No period still and it is September.  I have never missed a period never not even in High school or College when I played softball for both.  I was on the pill for eight years but always had a period they got lighter on the pill but never missed.  I called the doctor on the third month missed and she said to come and have some blood work done.  That all came back negative.  I go this week for a vaginal ultrasound and I am scared.  I went off the pill because when my husband gets home from his deployment we want to try and have a baby.  I have always wanted kids that is why I worked in Daycare for 11 years and finally became a school teacher.  I don't know what I would do if I couldn't have babies!!!!  It sounds like my doctor is on track with wanting to find out what is really going on I am just scared.  I know I am stressed with the deployment and working full time and going to school but geee.  Also I have never ever gotten zits before and I am getting them around my hair line as well as in between my breast what the heck.  I never thought at my age and always getting my Aunt flo that I would ever have to deal with this.  It is stressful all on its own.  I mean not change in color discharge nothing what is up with all of this.

You are not the only one with that problem. I've never been regular ever since i started my period at the age of 13. The first time it happend i was really scared so i told my mom and she asked me if i have been sexually active with a guy, i told her no, then she was like then u don;t need to worry abt it. am now 23 and i've never had my period every month. I have it 3 times a yr, which is every 4 months just like you. I've been to a couple of doctors and they all say the same thing, there's nothing wrong with me. One wanted to put me on a pill that will make it regular, then i told him no thanks, i will do that when am ready to have kids. My only source of relief is that my mom is like me even some of my aunties toor like that and they all have kids.  So in ur case you don't really have to stress abt it too much, it's normal for some of us. Not all women are the same. But if u want to get it every month, then see ur doctor, so that he/she can prescribe some medication for you. Good luck!!

Wow... I cannot believe how many of you have the same problem... Thank you all for posting
Feb - Period
May - Period
Sept - still waiting.... 4.5 months, VERY BLOATED AND FEEL FULL, Painful lower back pain and constipated... I had sex about 4 months ago, but if I was 4 months pregnant I would know it... I do not have ANY of the signs... except lower back pain.
I work 14 hours a day, very emotionally stressed too.
Is the cause for MASSIVE bloating a sign that yes your period is there... but there is something in there not allowing it to actually HAPPEN!!... it scares the hell out of me.

I am living in a country where no one speaks English, I live alone, no car, no friends due to work and a very bloated tummy.

Is anyone incredibly bloated and having lower back pain... let me not forget Emotional!!!!

I tried everything... nothing will induce my period.

I am a mother of 3 children and in July 03' I had a tubial done. The doctor used a method of all 3.. tied clipped and burned. Prior to my 3rd child I had to have my cervix frozen because of pre-cancer cells. Now I haven't had a period in over 4 months, my stomach cramps like I am on my period but nothing ever happens. I am unsure of what is going on and I have no kind of health insurance at all and do not know where to turn now. Everyday I feel like the muscles in my stomach jumping and kind of flutters almost like a heartbeat ... the home pregnancy tests that I have taken have came back negative. I am so unsure of what to do ... someone please give me some advice!! Thanks alot in advance!!

I havent had a period for 5 months now I have gone to mutiple doctors and found out today that maybe the reason for it is called a Pituitary Gland. It acts as a switch board and triggers your Thyroid if this happens it will make your body do crazy things. I have pregnancy like symtoms (symptoms) even breast milk but I'm not pregnant. The Thyroid creates hormones without the correct hormones your body can go out of wack, I have depression, anxiety, stress, parinoia, I cant sleep I have gained 15lbs. But the fix can be easy getting diagnosed is the hard part. I hope this info can help the rest of you out.
I also have had my doctors look at me like i'm crazy just remember its your body and you have the controll dont take no from a doctor. I went to the doctor atleast once a week for a month, still didnt get any answers. I decided to go see another doctor and got totally diffrent ideas and better advice. I feel guilty for doing that to my Primary Care doctor but atleast now I know more than I have in the past 5 months.
I hope this will help some of you who still hasnt got any answers!!!

I have heard of problems with the pituitary gland also… about tumors on it (don’t wanna scare anyone) but I heard have the doctors to test your prolactin levels which is a hormone and if you have low prolactin you might have a tumor on your pituitary Do your reach search on it it can cause missed periods. But I don’t think I read anything about it being deadly or anything. Thats the best answer Ive gotten from another forum.
Anyway…
I am 18 years old (19 in Feb) and for the past year I have not been having a period for 6 months and then staying on my period for more than a week. I am not on birth control and haven’t been for over a year.
Here some details that may or may not be relevant:
In 2004 I went to my doctor because I was having very bad pelvic pain and she put me on birth control (Ortho tri cyclin lo)
In 2005 I was diagnosed with endometriosis
In 2006 I had a laparoscopy  and was put on the birth control Yasmine and told to take it so that I only have 2 periods a year but I don’t think I ever took it the way I should and had more than that.
In September 2007 I stopped taking Yasmine had a period in October (15th) and November (18th) both lasting for 4 days. Then I didn’t have a period intil June 5 and it stayed on for 10 days. Then from October 22nd intil November 5th and then on the 21st and 22nd I had some very light spotting daily. The discharge would be very light pink or light brown or it would be darker in the morning and by the end of the day it would be off.  Then it actually came on for real December 10th intil December 28th and during that time it was very heavy with large clots. I experienced a little nausea and virtually no cramps.
I see my OB/GYN every February since 2004
I had sex Dec 31st 2007… once a week April & May… 4 times during June & July.. then the last time was Nov 21st.
I have no history of cancer in my family
Im 4’11” and 100lbs
My stress level is very low
My mood stays the same pretty much all the time
I started my period when I was in 2nd grade
I haven’t been to my doctor since Feb 2008
Im not pregnant, Im not tryin to get pregnant nor am I scared.. but I would like to know.. but I just hate the diagnosis process!

Firstly, let me say I've read a lot of your comments and I have all the same symptoms.  i am 32 and went off the pill in September and have not had a period since.  Since I'm trying to get pregnant, obviously no period was a great concern!  I went to my OBGYN, who is a fabulous doctor and is widely known in Eastern Ontario (Canada).  He diagnosed me with Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrom (syndrome) (PCOS). In a nutshell what is happening is I am not producing enough progesterone to "push the eggs out" Which in turn is forming little cysts around my eggs and since the eggs aren't being pushed out, I'm not ovulating.
My doctor prescribed me 10 days of Novo-medrone (10mg) to induce a period.  I took my last pill today.  My period is supposed to start in a couple of days, and then on the fifth day of my period, I start clomid to stimulate ovulation.  Hopefully this will work.  The bottom line is ladies, this is VERY common.  Approx 1 in 3 women experience annovulation (not ovulating) at some point in their lives.  Don't feel like you're not a woman, or abnormal, we're not!  It is common and can be fixed.  Best of luck ladies! You are not alone!  Take Care :-)

My girlfriend is having similar problems. She is 22 years old. She went off the pill and since has not gotten her period. Its been about 10 months or so. She is constantly in alot of pain and her body is tired all the time. She has gained about 20-30 pounds also. Her vagina is also extremely sensitive to the point that she cant have sex because its far too painful. Even her last visit to her woman doctor caused her extreme pain. She said it felt like a knife was scraping around inside her. Shes had many tests done but they cant figure out whats wrong. Theyve now scheduled her for a colposcopy. I am pretty worried so Ive just started doing some internet research and came across this discussion. It seems alot of people with similar problems have all stopped taking the pill so maybe that has something to do with it? This seems like a good discussion site for people to communicate with people having similar problems so I'll definately post an update after her next test. Thanks to everyone for their posts, every bit of information helps. I hope those of you having similar problems find out whats wrong and get better!

Whoa! All along i felt sad and alone thinking that i'm the only one with this problem. I was on the depo shot for approx2 years; however, i discontinued the shot in May 08. May 09 is approaching and I have still not seen my period. I am scared, confused, and worried! Most women go on the birth control with the intentions to block out all potential pregnancies, but doesn't realize that it is an obstacle when the time comes to get pregnant! My biggest issue is that im afraid of not being able to have kids because of stupidddd decisions!! which is wanting to have sex at an early ageeeee and had to resort to birth control in order to do so ! I'm only 20!!!!!!!  what should i do ? i want to see my period! i want to ovulate!

My period has always been irregular, at the most, skipping one month at a time.  The first time I skipped my period for more than a month was back in 1998 at that was for 5 months.  At the time I was 26, a student with a boyfriend on the east coast.  Honestly I just thought it was the stress that caused my period to be elusive for that long.

I am now 37 and I again am in the same predicament.  I don't recall getting my period in Nov 2008, but I know for sure I did not have it from Dec 2008 through today (5 months).  I am currently unemployed and so I cannot afford to go to the doctor.  I don't have a boyfriend and haven't in a year so I know I'm not pregnant.  In the past my gynecologist had told me that they could induce my period as it's not good for your health to skip so many months and that the next time I should come in to do so.  To be honest, I think it might be early menopause.  Aside from hot flashes, cold sweats and irregular sleeping, does anyone know the other symptoms?  I've had all of these and to be honest, I could care less if I ever get my period again.  The only downfall is that if it is early menopause...my chance of ever having a child is null and void.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi I agree with what Jenn1976 wrote in February.  I have the same problem and I have had irregular periods from the time i first got it.  I have a GYNO and he explained to me that lack of periods is very very common and nothing is done about it until you ask go see a doc and tell them specifically what your concerns are and what you are experiencing even though it's embarassing.   A common problem many girls have and don't know about is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and majority of the time it doesn't cause any pain.  It does cause wieght gain and at time for some unfortunate woman extra hair growth.  PCOS is so commom but until you ask about it and get an ultrasound (usually Transvaginal) it's doesn't get diagnosed.  I'm on the same thing as Jenn 1976.  When you turn 30 it is important to get a period every month.  If you look up PCOS or lack of monthly periods often puts women at a higher risk for cervix cancer.  The NovoMedrone they prescribe is only around $20 with the pharmacy dispensing fee.  Until I turned 30 my GYNO wasn't pushy about missing periods and recommended that if I didn't get a period every 3 months to see him but now that I'm 30 he tells me that every month i am suppose to get a period.  Good Luck girls and please go see a GYNO and not just a regular doctor so you can be diagnosed properly.

Here is a site to read:  http://www.health.com/health/library/topic/0,,tw9103_tw9109,00.html

and here are a few symptoms from the website above:
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

If you are between 20 and 40 years old, see your doctor if you have:

Menstrual cycles that are consistently less than 21 days apart or more than 35 days apart.
Regular menstrual cycles but you have been trying unsuccessfully to become pregnant for more than 12 months.
Vaginal bleeding that lasts more than 8 days; large clots; or excessive spotting.
Pelvic pain that lasts for more than 4 weeks.
Excessive hair growth or hair growing on the chest, back, belly, or face (hirsutism).
Any symptoms of diabetes, such as increased thirst and frequent urination (especially at night), unexplained increase in appetite, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, or tingling or numbness in your hands or feet.
Skin problems such as acne, oily skin, dandruff, skin tags (acrochordons) in the armpits or neck area, or dark skin patches (acanthosis nigricans) in skin folds or on the neck, groin, or underarms.
Depression or mood swings. Many women may have emotional problems related to the many physical symptoms of PCOS, such as excess hair, obesity, or infertility.
Excess weight gain or upper body obesity (more abdominal fat than hip fat). This is also known as android obesity and is related to increased male hormone (testosterone) levels.

If you are a teenage girl, see your doctor if you have:

Fewer than eight menstrual cycles a year, and this has lasted for 2 years after you started menstruation.
Severe acne.
Hair loss from your scalp.
Excessive hair growth or hair growing in places such as the chest, back, belly, or face.
Menstrual cycles that are consistently less than 21 days apart or more than 45 days apart.
Excess weight gain or upper body obesity (more abdominal fat than hip fat). This is linked to high androgen levels.

This website state that it does not intend to replace medical opinion so please see your doctor/GYNO for a proper diagnoses.

I too have had a constant battle with my mentstrual cycle since I was old enough to have one.  When I was 14 I woke up with a bloated feeling and bad cramps.  I hadn't had my period yet, so I thought maybe, finally, it would start.  Instead the pain got worse, to the point of doubling over and no blood came.  I went to the hospital and ended up in surgery to remove my hymen which was blocking the flow.  Apparently I'd been having my period for almost a year or so and it was pooling in my uterus.  I am a small person (5'3 and 115lbs)  and had no visual bloating or pain of any kind while I was bleeding inside.
After that my periods came once every few months, which really never bothered me.  I was sexually active through highschool and went on and off birth control throughout.  I never became pregnant.
Then I settled down and began dating a guy steadily and we had unprotected sex the whole time.  I still had regular periods every 3 months.
Then after a year and a half of dating I got pregnant at 19.
After my baby my periods were heavy and much more frequent.  Even predictable.
We tried to have more children for several years, but to no avail.  Two years ago we broke up and me and my new fiance have been trying to get pregnant for one year and nothing.
Now at the age of 26 my periods have stopped.  Last October I had a period, then in January I had one.  It's May and no spotting, no cramps, bloating nothing.  I go through periods of breaking out and breast tenderness, but that's it.
My mother and all the women on her side of the family have irregular periods also, but they all have 2 or more children and never had a problem getting pregnant.  My mom has been pregnant 4 times!  I know how depressing and frustrating all of this can be.  I love children and have wanted a large family for a long time.  My fiance is the best and would make the greatest father.  I hope to get some answers from my doctors soon.  Best of luck to everyone.

I have high blood pressure, and have pretty regular periods.  I'm also on medication for my blood pressure.  In the last 19 months, I've had sex with the same person only 3 times.  Twice, and then 8 months later, once.  After the first two times, my period remained normal.  After the one time together 8 months later, my period showed up like it should have the following month, but I only spotted for the first and beginning of the second day.  Now its been 2 months since that's happened.  I've taken 2 pregnancy tests; both negative.  I dont think i'm pregnant, but can't understand why my period is a no show 2 months in a row, only after i've had sex this one time.  I want to have a baby.  But I'm really not sure if I can.  I hope my missing period is not some kind of mind trip.  I"m only 29.

Hey thanks for your posts. I have been having completely irregular periods since I hit my 20s. I'm 29 now. Things are not much better. When I was 25 I had an ovarian cyst which burst and a whole manner of triouble happened with that, and was told I would be prone to cysts and was put on the pill to help minimise them. That made me pretty regular for a few years (which was a relief) until last year. Every month my period (which is supposed t be made lighter and less painful while on the pill) became heavier and heavier and the pain increased in intensity until October 08 when I was literaly doubled up crying with the pain, thats when I went back to my GP who said I was growing immune to my pill as I've been on it so long and changed the brand for me, the next 3 months my periods were later and later and still very heavy and painful so my GP again changed my pill, but they still were arriving later (strangely by 1/2 days later each month than before and always finishing the day after I went back on the pill each month) so by the time I got to Feb 09 I had no period at all! My pill had been chaged 3 times by now. I was told to have no break in between my next pill to boost the hormones but still no period arrived so my GP changed my pill AGAIN and on my request referred me to a gynae. My appointment is in Dec 09 so I have a bit of a wait. My period finally xame this month, late by a few days but still here, and not as heavy as one might think  after not having it for 5 months or so but I feel so light headed and so much pain. Thing is while each month I didnt get my period I would still get the symptoms. Like I would get the bloating (which carried on through each month and added to the next month - I now look about 6 mo ths pregnant and have actually been offered seats on the train!) the PMS the aches but now bleeding. Its like I have a blockage. I looked at amenorrehea but it doesnt seem to relate to me. Just have to wait for thr gym appointment in Dec I guess. *****! Oh and I'm not pregnant, did the tests myself and also blood tests and urine tests with GP, all negative.

Oh and girlygirl888 - if your worried you should talk to your mom/GP/someone you trust about your fears!

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
I am sure you must have tested for pregnancy. Also I am not sure about your age. But if you have not had period for 4 months you must get another checkup from your gynecologist. Some cysts cause hormonal imbalance and hence delayed periods. It could also be due to hypothyroidism too. If you are in menopausal age group then its normal, but here also you must get a check up.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Ok...having read all the posts, would appreciate if someone could holla back on mine...

Have PCOS...been through mennorhagia...this march was the time I got off the pill...and havent had my cycle since...

Recently had unprotected sex (foolish thing to do,1st and last time)...
What are the chances of getting pregnant? As far as I know ovulation begins before the actual period so I wouldnt know if I would have had the cycle this month...

Appreciate a response to this...cheers !!!
Have a great day !!!   =)

Thanks guys, i felt really wierd amongst all my other mates, i'm 14 and i started my period when i was 12 almost 13 and ever since i only had a couple of them every 4 months, my mum said it was just because it was my first and i heard it last for about 15 months, but its almost been 2 years and i have been so worried, i lost my virginity soon after my 13th and i thought i was pregnant even though i used protection but i had my period after that, but there still irregular. i thought i might have an STI or something so got a test and it came back negative, so i started researching. but it made me feel like i wasn't a woman and a bit of a freak, but knowing that you guys have experienced the same thing made me feel alot better! and i am going to go to the docters for help, but thank you for making me feel better :)

Hello, so, I've had irregular periods ever since I started. I started my period at age 15, had it for about 5 months and then nothing until I was 17. After that, I would have my period for one or 2 months and then I wouldn't have it for a month or two and sometimes even three. I went to my doctor about it and she put me on birth control which helped, I was pretty regular for a few months but I went off of it because I didn't like the way my body reacted to it, I got really moody and tired all of the time. This went on until september 2008. I had one in september but didn't have one for months! I went to a doctor in April and he told me that because I'm overweight is why I'm not having me period. Yes, I am overweight, but I have always been overweight and it has never gone that long without having one. Ironically, I started my period about a week after I went to the doctor but it was extremely lighter than usual. But I haven't had one since then. I've taken multiple pregnancy tests and they have all returned negative, even the ones at the doctor. I've lost almost 20 punds since my doctor's visit hoping that it will help me get my periods back. But I have had no luck what so ever. Is there anyone out there that has experienced the same thing or that might have some answers?

well I am 13 years old and i have been having my period since i was 12 and I recently have been having irregular periods. I went 4 months without having one. Then august 31 I started and bleed for 6-7 days, And I went to the doctor and they done blood work and it all came back great. But I had a pelvic ultrasound, I have PCOS (polycystric overie syndrome) and the doctor put me on yazmine, so that the folicles on my overies dont turn to cyist, and to regulate my period, but I have to wait untill I start again which should be in two weeks but she said if I dont just to pick a Sunday and take the pill.

Hello Ladies, I haven't had a period since May 2009. The last time I had sex was December 2008, So I know that I'm not pregnant. I'm 21 years old and my period is usually irregular. It happened before at 17, My last period was May that year and it didn't come until August. I wonder if it has anything to do with the Summer. I seem to breakout every summer for some reason. Maybe the climate change affects my hormones or something. Can anyone else correlate that missing period with the whether too?

hey im having the same problem, my period has been absent scince i went off the BC pill in may this year. Ive been to my doc and he said to try black cohosh to bring up my estrogen levels so i went on it for a month, then i had pinkish spotting for about 2 days (sept 22nd-24th) and then nothing, THEN last thursday i had the most horrible cramps like i was in labour for about 3 hours, 3 days later on the sunday i got them again. SO i went to my doc and he said that was from me ovualting and i bled for those 2 days becuase my estrogen was back up. He thinks that i may have gotten pregnant on that weekend ( my hubby and i are TTC) so he said we are going to wait another week, if i dont start my period he is doing a beta HCG test ( preg test by blood) im sooo nervous im hoping im pregnant. If not then im back to square one....waiting. ugh.

I have a friend who was having this same problem, she stopped taking birth control because she wanted to get pregnant and she missed her period for like 5 months but wasn't prego. She went to the doctor and they ran some tests on her and apparently she was missing periods because she had a hormone imbalance, so they actually made her start taking birth control again to get a period. Weird isn't it?

Hi all
I am 28 went two years with out my period.  Went to docs said all was fine until I went to a Obgyn and Endo Doc at a big campus hospital.  Told me I had PCOS, anywho told me I had too much testosterone I cannot spell to early in the morning, anways they got my period started by shutting down my enitre system.  Gained 60 pounds that was when I was 19.  So was on a drug called syneral, that helps women who have endometriosis remove the bad cells inside their bodies so with that shut down, for 4 months I had no periods.  My periods used to last 10-12 days being in bed for 6 of those LOADS Of fun NOT!.... so I was 23 when I got married went on the pill after this so I wouldnt get pregnant, and also to regulate my periods because after the drug my periods were 3-8 months inbetween was told I may never have kids..... I was pregnant in April the following year while I was on the pill with a regular period Nuts. I miscarried on the May 24 long weekend.  So came off the pill knowing I could get pregnant, doc was amazed that happened.  Got a new family doc in this time, Female Doctor.  tried and tried to get pregnant so from 2006 the fall until 2007November tried and tried, lost weight, exercised did everything I was suppose too no baby.  Doc said well send you back to the Big Campus hospital see what they say.  Went to FLORIDA December 2oo7 still no period, did the wild monkey dance 3 times a day with hubby because it was a stress reliever for us, doc said we couldnt pregnant the normal way so we did it as much as we liked.  Well Jan rolled around 2008 still the same thing no period had a cyst removed end of January begining of feb 2008 went in for normal blood tests and physical was 9 weeks pregnant.  Normal pregnancy up until 30 weeks, bed rest until 36.5 weeks delivered a 8.5 pound baby girl Named Abigale-Joan Marie.  3 days old they found a cyst in her brain, she has PCOS and also found that my problem is genetic, was passed down threw my mom from her mothers, mother.  missing  a gene that helps the central nervis system.  So I have proved over the years that interesting things can happend we are trying for our second no progress yet but I am sure that just because one doesnt have a period doesnt mean you cannot get pregnant I sure hope all of you have the same luck as I have had Ill keep you posted as to my next little one,  in the next few months.

Hey all!

I'm going through a similar experience right now. I didn't have my period for about 6 months and went into the gyno, who tested me for both the pituitary gland tumor and thyroid disease (they're different). Both tests came back normal.

Just some info for those of you who might be "scared" at the tumor possibility.
- Pituitary gland tumors are not as serious as they used to be. MOST tumors are small and can be treated easily with a prescription, where the doctor would see you every 6th months to a year to just check things. I've known a couple of people with this who live normal, healthy lives and never had to have surgery. If surgery is needed, it isn't as dangerous as one might think. ANY surgery is "at risk" as all doctors will say, but it is one of the more mild brain tumor surgeries one could have.

- Thyroid disease I'm not as familiar with, but that again can be controlled with medicine. Science has taken leaps and bounds so scary things such as these aren't so scary anymore. :)

As for me... I'm at 8-9 months now and I haven't had a real period. One super light one and that's it. I went in for my horrible back pain (it was keeping me up and felt more of a sharp, stabbing pain) and they treated me for muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatories but that doesn't seem to be working- which is leading me to believe it isn't my muscles then. So I'm gonna have to go back to the doctor to make them check everything again, including cancer. I'm not pregnant, as I've had a pap smear and urine cultures as well.

BTW: Don't ever let a doctor tell you that half a year gaps in your period is "normal." Unless you're in your very beginning years of your menstration cycle, it isn't "normal." It means you have a hormone imbalance (usually, unless it is something serious.) Does that mean you have to worry and get it fixed? No, but definitely try to get basic blood work done and talk to your doctor about the "what ifs" (EX: What if it isn't normal? What if it is something else?) to double check. The more informed you are about what issues could be going on, the more you can speak to you doctor and explore all options.

Good luck gals. :)

I am 16 years old and I started my period when I was 12. They have never been very regular. Im currently on student exchange lliving in a foreign country and I have had a change in diet but I haven't had my period for a bit over 4 months. I havent had sex since my last period and have no signs of pregnancy apart from a slightly bloated stomach and a tiny bit of weight gain. I haven't taken a pregnancy test, its a bit difficult to get one because I'm living with a host family and I'm hardly by myself and I wouldn't want to buy one when they are around. Is it normal that I haven't had my period for 4 months? And should I take a pregnancy test or is there absolutely no chance of me being pregnant since I had my last period 2 weeks after the last time I had sex?

I havent read all these posts but I am assumming you all been tested for Polycystic Ovarian Sydrome (most posts dont meantion this unless I missed it)

fairly common and the biggest reason for having no periods.

I came off the pill at 30 and went 10 months - got acne (first time) & no period at all and was easily dignosed with blood & a ultra sound then went back on the pill - now trying for a baby at 33 its been 4.5 months no period I have been told to gain some weight & cut back on running - I am not underweight & only running 4 times a week

... so my advice before you totally panic get a dr to check for PCOS - getting pregrant is then fairly straight forward provera and clomhiene tablets

I would like to say that I am very sexual active and I have not had my period now for four months going on five and I am so scared. I have taken two urine test and it said negative and will be going in for a blood test. I do not use any protection and never have. I have no signs of pregnancy, but I always feel bloated. I also stay horny and wet a lot. I hate it. my discharge is thick sometimes and I get irritated quite often as well. I am over weight, but  has always been over wieght. Its not so fat that you see me and go she fat its the kind where my stomach is big and thighs could lose a few pounds and arms are broad. I am a dancer, but I rarely dance and is somewhat active in exercising when I am feeling up to it. I have been irregular before and has went as long as 3 months, but came on that third month towards the end, but that was a year ago in January of 09. I am so skeptical about what it could be. I have not seen a doctor yet. It all started with me taking a diet pill called suddenly slim that made me irregular in the first place. I stop taking that in three months according to how my body started to change. I hated what it did to me physically, but i am confused about my period now. I am a student graduating in May. I am in a 8 year relationship and I am 23 years old March 31st. I NEED answers asap.

Hi I am 31 and have not had a period for 4 months i was ill for 4 years after having my secong child and have had various operations including a luna procedure and having my right ovary and fallopian tube removed due to constant debilitating pain.  They found my right tube was completly blocked and my ovary was covered in cysts as the eggs had no where to go.  Also suffer from endometriosis.  I found after they removed my ovary and fallopian tube I was great, no pain and got my period every two months.   Lately the pain I suffered from before has come back and I have not had a period since November last year,  this is different from last time as i bled constantly before.  I have taken pregnancy tests and they come back negative.  If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey everyone,

I have read your comments and I am also in the same situation. I have had a irregaular period since I was 16 and I am now 29. My doc just tells me that my hormones are out of balance. He sent me for a ultrasound and said that everything was fine and stated that he was surprised that I didn't have any cysts on my ovaries. I have been taking Provera now for quite sometime and it eventually quit working so i just stopped taking it. I occasionally get cramping like my period is going to start but nothing. I am going crazy because I want answers and my doctor isn't giving me any. I will most likely change doctors because my husband and I are TTC and we are obviously not having any luck because with no period you can't ovulate. I am just frustrated. Myabe with a new doctor my questions will get answered.

Good day', I am doctor Oscar Villanueva Phd., from El Paso, T.X.  I just want to comment on most women's health questions regarding 'pockets' (as we call it) or 'missing' menstrual cycles in a 4-6 month range basis.  Human anatomy is an on going study and as a (still) student (as 'i' consider it), it changes consistently.  I have to legally and personally advice that you should consult a gynecologist, however, and that being said, (doctors are so bad at writing), it is 100% normal.  Personally, again, I'd advice you to pay for a quick check-up.  "What can go wrong does go wrong".  A reason added to my personal list on why I give two thumbs up to universal healthcare is preemtive care.

Whew!  I'm glad I'm not the only one!  My periods have never been consistently regular.  When I was a teenager, I once skipped 5 months worth of periods.  I'm 24 and for most of my period life I usually had them once a month or once every other month.  One month it will show up early in the month, then the next month it might wait until late in the month and remain like that for a while.  Then, I might skip a month and then it would come in the middle of the next month or something.  My mom and sister are regular and suffer tremendous pain, but supposedly my periods are more like my aunt's (if that makes any sense).

However, I've been a bit concerned recently.  I've never had vaginal sex, but in November I skipped and it came back in December.  I skipped January but it came in February...maybe March, but I'm pretty sure it's February.  Now, it's May and I haven't seen my period.  I felt maybe a little bit of pain, but not much if any these months.  I did see a literal spot of blood today, but that's it.  I have put on weight over the past months, but unless I'm going through immaculate conception chances are it's normal weight gain from not being as active.  I heard that weight gain or weight loss can cause missed periods as well.

I would go to a doctor, but I do not have health insurance (I miss England).  I work a part-time job due to the recession and I am working on my Master's part-time through a state university (via online).  If I could afford health insurance I would go to an OB/GYN to check to make sure it's not PCOS or something even more serious.  I'm going to wait it out since it's only been 2-3 months and I've once missed it up to 5 months when I was 15.  There's only been very little if any pain and the weight gain has been happening even late last year.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I agree that not having your period all the time doesn't make you any less of a woman.  When I try to tell other women--including my mom and sis--this, all they say is, "Lucky! I wish I could skip my period!"  I'll wait it out a few more months since I really don't have health insurance and I only make about $400 a month if that.  The life of a graduate student, LOL.  Maybe we should start a support group, but anonymity is good too.  Thanks to all of you ladies for sharing your stories (*hugs*).

Hi, really frustrating isn't it? I stopped the pill several months ago as it wasn't agreeing me and haven't had a period since. My skin looks awful, I'm bloated and knackered. Am off to the see my GP on Tues for blood test etc. Hopefully i will get an answer- am defo not prgnat. Didnt have a period for ages after having my baby last summer then had a bit of spotting for 2 days and that was it- not a thing since. It makes you feel really low and obviously concerned.....

I hear and feel you all.

I am 23 and I just had my period (totally unexpected after 4 months and 2 weeks, I lost count/ stopped waiting). I always had irregular cycles, 2 months, 3 months, 7 months...and I am a virgin.

I spoke to a doctor and did some tests on my hormones, everything came out normal. She gave me Provera, 1 pill/day for 2 days and it came.

I stopped eating it because I don't like artificial hormones much, I think it's not too healthy/natural, so I prefer to take as little of them as possible, and getting prescriptions to buy the pills are such a pain.

Just have faith and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
I believe every woman is unique. And hence the different than average period cycles.

I do take Evening Primrose Oil as a supplement though, I think it does help regulate the cycles. My mum started eating it since her menopause and I know a few of my peers who do. I've been more diligent in eating them daily lately, maybe that's why my period came again, perhaps. Or I finally settled down in my new work life in Boston, since graduation.

Hi everyone!

I have an update for you :).  Okay, I posted earlier that I haven't had my period since February (I'm certain now that it was February).  After two UTI infections, one hormone blood test, one urinalysis, and two Nurse Practitioners; I finally discovered a common thread.  When I missed my period for 5 months when I was 15, the gynecologist said I had a small bacterial infection.  This time, I had a moderate bacterial infection and they gave me medicine to deal with it.

After 7 days, the Flagyl didn't seem to help the BV b/c the discharge was still yellow, but I was told that I should eat yogurt with acidophilus, take a probiotic, and someone even recommended drinking raspberry leaf tea.  After a few days of doing this, my period started back!!!  Granted, it's very light, but it's still a period :D!  Even though the NP said that she doubts the BV caused me to miss my period, I think that may have been my issue.  I'll probably go in for a wet prep in a couple of weeks still, but yogurt with acidophilus, raspberry leaf tea, and possibly a probiotic once a day could help.  However, ask your doctor/NP first before trying them just in case you have some health issues.

I too have not had my period for about three months my primary care physician simply told me to wait that it will come. I am difinitely not pregant all blood work give me a negative result. My doctor said that because I've gained so much wait that could be the cause. I was not satisfied with his diagnosis so I went to see my OBgyn he conducted a papsmear, and a vaginal ultrasound. The papsmear was fine, but the ultrasound determined I had a fibroid in my uterus. It's small and he said that I would only have to follow up in a year to see if it's grown or if it's remained the same. he also said that one thing had nothing to do with the other. Meaning that the fibroid is not the cause of me not having my period. Mean while, I recently scheduled an appointment with another OBgyn to see if I can obtain a second opinion. I have no abdonimal pain or any discomfort at all. I am really concerned I have never been irregular, or have had this happen in the passed.  Has anyone had this happen to them? or have had a fibroid? Please advise,

Hey girls. Like a few ppl have mentioned earlier... seriously consider PCOS. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Its what I have. & its funny too because last June, I went to my doctor b/c my periods were very irregular too. They always have been since I was 11 when I started. I'm currently 19 now. But anyway, I knew something was up. So I did my research. My symptoms included irregular periods, weight gain, & the worst.... hair loss. & what I found was a lot of info about something called PCOS. So I did even more research, and it all started to make sense. So I was explaining this to my gyno and I said "do you think PCOS may be what I have?" & she said well I'm not sure, and just prescribed me bc & provera. Then, just last month when I went in for my exam, she said "I believe you have PCOS!" I diagnosed myself a year earlier! PCOS is not uncommon at all, 1 out of 10 women have it. & symptoms usually begin sometime after one begins menstration. What is most devastating from what I hear, is the option to become pregnant.  I'm not trying to get pregnant at this time, so she said the only thing I can do is just take birth control to make me regular, which is fine. Just kind of hoping that I will be able to have children someday =/. Its not impossible, just may be a little difficult. But anyway I'm not saying this is what EVERYONE has... but by the 80 some posts, and the 1 out of 10 statistics... I think it deserves some research ladies. I hope this helped! - Christy

Wow, It's amazing how many people are having this problem.... I have always been irregular, until I got on the pill. Trying to lose weight, I came off it about a month or so ago to help. My BF and I had sex June 19th and I took a HPT on July 19th and it came back negative.... but I am going to take another one here soon. I'm having the cramping and the annoying discharge I'm sure we all hate, but no blood....? Am I sick? Could I be pregnant?

Hi u guys have the same symptom I did. I am 29 and did not have a period since last April 2009. I finally went to a doc cause the hubby and I were TTC. I didn't happen. I was diagnosed with PCOS 2 mths ago. my ovaries are blocked and that is what is causing me not to have a period or even ovulate. So now I am seeing a fertility spec. to conceive  . You may want to go see a doc, they will prob do specific blood test to check your levels and maybe an HSG exam to see if your tubes/ ovaries are blocked. Don't want to scare you, I did all of these test, I was normal, and always on time until April 09.   so I guess its something that happens to the best of us.. don't worry too much, get checked out  don;t wait a year like I did and the faster you find the problem the faster you can fix it and get your BFP!!
good luck to u all !!

All of these factors listed below lead to the lack of normal stimulation of the hypothalamus. Thus, the chain fails to get started in the first place. Returning to normal body weight, removing the offending drugs, or reducing stress, usually solves the problem.

Dear all,
I went through the same problem...din't get my periods for 4 months. I had an ultra sound of the lower abdomen done, only to discover poly-cystic ovaries. I had to take duphaston for 5 days to induce my periods, which came after 12 days. I am now on yasmin pills to regulate my cycle.

Hello all

- Nee77 I also think i might have Poly cystic Ovary's, just wondering how you said you are now taking pills to regulate your period, are you still able to have children?
Im worried I may have this and never be able to have kids, as i want a lot lol...

I am 19 turning 20 next month had my period since i was 14.. at 1st it was irreguar and would last 4-5months at a time but very light and dark brown..then i went on the injection Depo when i was 15 for about 8months and haven't been on anything since, then i never really counted my cycle or anything, just came when it came i suppose, the last 2years i have been counting my cycle, and i had a boyfriend and we lived together, we didn't use any protection as we were trying for a baby, my periods were normal at 1st then came every 5weeks and when we broke up 4months ago was when i had my last period..i have done 2pregnancy tests both negative and i did them 3weeks apart, i haven't been to see a doctor as all they say it, im over weight and that is whats probably causing it to be irregular, but i have never gone this long without 1 its been a bit over 4months now, im scared i might have Poly cystic ovary`s and wont be able to have kids!!..

Anyone had the same problem being over weight??

I am 23 years old and I haven't had a period in more than a year now, I've gain possibly over 20lbs within the last year and a half but I do not have a child, no obgyn seems to be able to assist me, they all claim that I have hormone problems and it is due to the weight gain. I did ultrasounds and multiple prenancy test they are all negative. I did a blood test but my gynecologist claims that eveything seems fine. Last year January I had my period which lasted until the the first week in March. I haven't seen my period since. I've always had abnormal cycle, I would miss a month or 2 occassionally but now it is far more than a month, it has been over a year.I do not use a condom with my bf and he does not pull out  is cuming and I still don't get pregnant... I need to know what is wrong with me, I don't have a period and I'm not getting pregnant... I need help pls.

I had my first period at 12 years old, and for the first few times it would be regular-irregular. I thought it would just level out eventually, since the first year or two can be a bit rocky. It then became irregular, with periods coming and going every couple of months, with one or two instances one month afterward. But now I'm 18 and I haven't had a period since August 2010...? It's possible it was even before that.

This past year has been a big one, but I don't think it's caused an excruciating amount of stress. I'm thinking there MAY be a link with some lifestyle changes? Like maybe lack of exercise or nutrition or something like that. I'm really worried about going to a gyno--I know it's in my best interest to just do it so I can try to alleviate this problem or at least get some solid information on the subject.

I'm thinking soon I will have to tell my mum, since my sister will be moving out later this year and it'll be a dead giveaway when my mum sees the overflowing bundles of supplies. I have NEVER discussed my period to anyone before, except online. I hate having to live each day, and each month goes past, but no Flow comes to visit me. I really miss it. And I get jealous when my friends complain about cramps and whatnot, because I want them. At least to make me feel like a girl again.

I'm only 15 and ever since my period started a few years ago, it's been extremely irregular. I can't even remember when was the last time I had it, not that I'm complaining. I know I'm not pregnant since I've never had sex. I know when you first get your period it's irregular, but when it stops for almost an entire year now, and it's been about 3 years since I first got it, that's not normal I assume. Anyone care to help?

I have not had a period for 1 year! I started my periods when I was 13 years and I have never had regular periods but only usually miss a month or two. I am a little on the heavier side but I am not obese. I have been to the doctors a few times they did blood tests, I even had a scan and vaginal scan they couldn't find anything wrong. I had a blood test they couldnt find any.. It's not nice not having them, cos I never know if I will come on or not so I'm really scared that there is something wrong with me and i'm scared that when I do eventually come on to my period that I will be heavy I will just bleed everywhere... Im 20, I havent had a period for 5 months, I'm not pregnent had a few tests done at the doctors, going for some more blood tests tomorrow. My GP has told me that it could be a number of things some serious some not, the simplest of things can cause stress to your body such as change in diet or routine. I started taking the pill at 13 because I started my period when I was 9 and it made me very ill, hence why I started taking the pill so young, my GP thinks that because I have been taking the pill for 7 nearly 8 yearsthat is what is causing problems with my periods and has advised me to stop taking it and use other forms of contreceptions, but i have been refeered to have blood test to check my hormone levels, ovaries and any thyriod problems, just to rule them out, I would ask your GP about having test done for these things if they are not willing to help go to your local GUM clinic, they are specialised in sexual and genital health and will always do all they can to help.

hey guys...so,i am 21 and i haven't had a period in about 4 months now..in November 2009, i had my son. and in January of 2010, i was prescribed the birth control pill by my obgyn. i took the pill and had normal periods up until December of 2010, when i quit taking it. i then had 2 pretty normal periods after that. February 2011 was the last period i had. i am definitely not pregnant. i have tested numerous times and don't feel anything like i did when i was pregnant with my son. but, now that it was hit the 4th month of no period, i am getting worried. i havent gone to a doctor yet, because i donthave health insurence and cant afford to. what could be causing this? my periods have ALWAYS been normal. every 28 days like clockwork! i feel tired all the time and like i have no energy.. i have gained some weight since i had my son.. but i havent gained any since my last period..so its hard for me to think that my weight would be causing it...anyone have any idea what could be causing this!??!
thank you :)

Hello, anyone? I hope you can read this.

Anyways, I never ever gotten my period going to be the fourth month. I have no idea why though, so I thought it was my Iron or something. Usually my iron goes really low and my stomach aches hurts me as hell. Trust me, I had to go to the hospital! That is when I was fifteen. Years now I've trying to maintain this iron thing and gotten pills so it's alright. So I thought it was my iron is messing my period so I went to my doctors and says that my iron was the same last time. So I was afraid I thought I was Preg! I was off my pill for a year now, so I guess I was Preg. We didn't use protection either. Also my boyfriend, is extremely careful, he knows that he will be dead if I was preg. Anyways, So my doctors says it might cause I may be gaining weight. I am around 172 pounds, I rarely eat because I have no food in the house, so I get chips and pop every week. Not saying I am huge, just average person. My Doc said i have to fast for 12 hours, so they can get the blood. So i did that, and now i'm waiting to go back. Maybe there is some health issue about me with my weight, or something. Not sure, but I am scared what I am to find. I'm only eighteen not sure if that is a good age or a bad age not to get my period. I'm always thinking its my weight and I do excerise every week too. No idea why though, can someone reply to this please?

Okay so I'm glad I found this page and now here's my situation...In March 2011, I had my regular period on the 7th, but in April I didn't have a period at all. On May 7th, I had my period again. I thought it was wierd how I missed a whole month exactly, but I thought nothing of it. Then in June and now halfway through July, I still haven't started my period, but last night I woke up to some spotting just for a few minutes. It was a bright red when I wiped and I was so relieved thinking it was my period, but now I'm worried I spoke too soon =( I'm only 19 years old and I'm scared this may be a side effect from the 2 out of 3 HPV vaccines I had gotten last year. I took 2 out of 3 pregnancy tests that I bought and they turned out negative.  So does anyone have an idea of what may be wrong? Thanks for the help!

I am 33. I have an average BMI and make sure I exercise regularly, and  under i'm no stress. BUT, I have not had a period for 4 months. My period however, has never been regular. I've been skipping about month for years!

Diagnosed PCOS a few yrs ago after an ultrasound. I have embarrassing hair on my chin which i HATE (a symptom of PCOS). I used to have lovely thick hair, which is now thin & brittle. One side of my hair grows quicker than the other. Unsure if that's linked to my PCOS?. Anyway, my Dr advised I keep healthy & exercise, he put me on the pill & said let him know when I want to conceive.

So, i now would like to conceive. Went to my dr's & asked for metformin or clomid, as i have researched these are the PCOS drugs that are given. Dr asked me to come back after a year of trying, as it's not yet been year. I had a blood test done, which came back as normal.

I've done 3 preg tests during my 4 mth absent period - all negative.

My period felt like it wanted to come last month, I had weird brown discharge & sore breasts, then it went away again??

My mothers brother is infertile and so is my fathers sister, my mother did not find it easy to conceive also. I know it sounds daft, but it does worry me that i may also be infertile. I actually went to the Dr's about it when i was 14 due to my irregular periods, but they dismissed it & said I was healthy & would have no probs at all conceiving.

I don't know whether to use VITEX, as I ordered it on line after reading it helps PCOS & regulates periods, but it says on the bottle don't use if your pregnant. I would feel awful if i miscarried because of it, how would I know if I did become pregnant, some women don't even have pregnancy symptoms. So, it sits unopened in my draw.

I guess I have to be patient & my period will come. It's just annoying when your TTC & not ovulating at all. Not sure whether to give up alcohol all together and see how I go with that. I've ruled out caffine, wheat, potatoes, sweets, fizzy pop..all the things I love!! :( I now eat fruit, veg, red meats, fish, drink lots of water & herbal teas.

Hi my name is Candice and I am 18 years old and I also have irregular periods. I was 11 years old when I had my first period. Everything was normal until the ending of 2008. I got my period around mid December and I did not see another period until the second week of  April in 2009. When my mom noticed that my period was absent for such a long period of time she carried me to a doctor. I got some lab work done and everything came back normal and I wasn't pregnant. After that first time my period be fam coming irregularly, sometimes skipping one or two months at a time. Recently I missed my period from around mid March to August 7th this year. This time I assumed I was pregnant because I have regularly have sexual intercourse with my boyfriend of two years. So I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. But by accident my younger cousin hit me in my abdomen really hard and the following morning I saw my period. When it came I had intense cramps for two days on and off so I went to the hospital. There weren't any doctors available that day so I left and I never returned for a check up. But I'm assuming that I am no longer pregnant because my period continued for about five days total and now it is September and I got my period again just yesterday. So I am guessing I am back on track for now with my menstrual cycle under unintentional circumstances. But my boyfriend and I are still wondering if I should still see a doctor. Any suggestions?

Hey girl I kno exactly how u feel. I am wondering the same thing is it ok to have missed periods for such a long period of time and not b prego?....O_o I don't kno what the real reason is. Like u I have nothing to eat in the house so I mostly eat wen I am at work. Out is frustrating to miss your period. When I missed my period for around 4 months like u for the first time I was scared. If I was pregnant me and my boyfriend would have been in some trouble lol. I was sixteen the first time. I am now eighteen and every now and again my periods become irregular but I don't kno y. The doctor asks not to worry about it but I think I should have a second opinion. If I get pregnant I would like to kno sand not b there wondering if I am pregnant or am I just having an irregular period. Ha e u changed how much u exercise lately caz to much exercise can caz stress to ur body and delay your period. But go easy on the exercising and try to eat more often and eat something healthy and not chips so much. Caz that can b another reason u are missing your period. Hope your results come back fine:) update us

I have not had a period since mid May 2011. I am 21 years old, so should not be menopausal problems. I was pregnant back in March of 2010, but circumstances were completely off and I ended up having an abortion (do not complain to me about this, it was best for the time). About a week after the abortion I started taking birth control and continued taking them until October. When my prescription was up, I did not have the money to go back to a doctor to get the prescription written. I had normal monthly periods up until May of this year. My periods had gotten increasingly longer apart, but still had one every month (which was regular for me prior to the birth control). But suddenly had stopped getting my period in May. I am probably considered obese (dont want to admit it), I am 5'3 and anywhere from 200-210 pounds. I have been having back pain worse than normal here lately (but figured it was just because my back is getting worse from having large breasts). I have seen a small amount of more discharge than normal, but chalked that up to being more active these past few months, because I was working at a summer camp. I have always had random break outs of acne, but here lately they have been pretty severe when they do happen. And my face and hair have been becoming more oily as this whole shenanagans progresses. I took 2 pregnancy tests back towards the end of July maybe beginning of August and they both came out negative.

Has anyone had any of these symptoms and has then found out you had any sort of infection, cancer or other problems?

I am really starting to get worried about this situation. But right now I am in between jobs and have horrible health care. So can not afford to go to a doctor for a checkup!

I'm 18. Mine started out normal, but then became irregular, and now I haven't had one in 10 months. I do have thyroid issues, could this be the cause?

Hi, i am also in the same predicament. I started my period when I was twelve, and when i clocked sixteen, it became irregular. Then later it became regular, and also irregular that sometimes it goes for two months before i see it again. But since June of this year, I havent seen my period or anything. This morning I was feeling a little cramps and spots of blood, so I used a pad, but after two hours, I checked and there was nothing. I dont normally like having my period, but right now am scared to death. Not even for now, but when am ready to start having kids, hope it wont affect me. Havent gone to see any doc yet, but I will do that as soon as possible to know if am ok or not.

I'm fourteen, and the last period I had was in August 2011. My period have ALWAYS been irregular ever since I started in early 2010. They may have been 6-8 weeks apart. I'm not sexually active and NEVER have been. Anyway, ever since August every now and then I would have cramp and PMS symptoms. I am  over weight and stressed a little bit from school. I sometimes experience a little pain in the period area, sort of like when you have a bladder infection (which I also have had many of over my childhood years) but on a very minimal scale. Is there anything wrong with me? Please help. Thank you.

I know this is an old post, but I'm hoping someone still keeps it up, b/c I am having very similar problems, and I need some quick advice. It has been over 3 mos. Since my last prd. I'm 24 years old now, started my prd @ 16, and it has always been irregular. This time is different, however. I've gained Almost 10 lbs, been Getting nauseous every night, face is breaking out for the 1st time since I was a teen. It's been scaring  me. I don't have any $ to see a doc right now, as my husband and I have both been laid off recently. He does not want me to  buy a home PT, bc I have cried wolf so  many times b4. Only bc I never can tell by my prds if I'm preg or not bc Im so irregular. I understand that he does not wanna spend our last bit of grocery $ on a PT that will most likely come out neg.,but I just don't know what to do. Could I be  preg.? (we always use protection) or do u ladies think in your own experience that I could just be stressed out, and Thats prolonging my period. Plz help.

Bree, your situation is fairly common from what I understand. When u start menstrating early, its common to be irregular. I was, and when I went to my doc 4 the 1st time bc of it, she told me to give it some time, then put me on birthcontrol to regulate. Then, my problem was that the pills had the opposite effect on me, and made me Stay on my  period for months at a time. Then the doc said they would most likely straighten out once I became sexually active. Now here I am 8 years later sexually active w/ my husband and its still messed up. My advice for you, since u r young is to give it SOME time (but don't do  like me and wait 8 yrs) if it has not regulated in a yr or so, demand tht ur doc figure out what is up. Keep me posted, good luck.

Because I am suffering with the same thing, I haven't come on my period for about three months now and I'm getting rather worried as I am only fifteen years old! I don't want it to be anything serious but also I'm scared about going to the doctors to see what they say, I know for definite I'm not pregnant but still I'm rather scared, can anyone tell me anything else I can do instead of going to the doctors and just waiting for it to come? Wb jade x

I am now 26 years old and Haven't had a period in almost two Years shortly after I had a necessary abortion due to my pancreatic problems. I have gone to the gyno and was told I had cysts then I went back and was told they were gone. I had only one mild period after that and after taking some pills to try and bring on periods. Then it went straight back to having no periods. I am on pain medication for my pancretitis but I was told that had nothing to do with it. I am scared that I have something seriously wrong with me. That was almost a year ago now and I know I need to go back to the doctor but have no health insurance so it's hard for me. II still get symptoms of periods like breakouts and pms but no periods. I am scared that I will not be able to have children in the future. Has anyone ever had this problem or a similar one? Please answer. Thx, Genevieve

Unless its some horrible disorder or a disease of some sort I say HALLELUIAH lol it wont hurt you to go with out your period, infact they have contraceptives and birth control pills now that prevent it all together for months at a time.... I LOVE it. I never though having one made me feel any more or going with out made me feel less. Dealing with it is SUCH an inconvenience.

I'm going to be 26 in Feb. My periods have never been really irregular, I just have a long cycle (5-6 weeks) usually. I took the pill for about 3 years, but have been off of it since about April of this year. Since then, I've gained 30 lbs and haven't had a period since September. I'm confused because I stopped the pill in April, had my period regularly up until the one I had in September, now nothing. I'm definitely not pregnant (haven't had sex since March so there's no way lol) I'm worried because I don't have health insurance due to being out of work and I don't know what's going on. As far as the weight issue, nothing I do (diet, exercise, etc.) helps. I can't lose a damn pound for anything!!! What the hell?!

I'm 42 yo n my period has been regular since it began at age 12. I had a mild to moderate flow dat lasted for three days. For the past year or so my period has gone months without a visit n then it'll come n last for eight or nine days flow heavier than I'm use to. Doc gave me some pills to take to make it come but I won't take them. I think it's early menopause but he says it's not. Smh. Ijdk.

I am so relieved I am not the only person with the problem.
I haven't had a period since October, and it's FEB now. I have sex in Dec. But was tested at the clinic and am not pregnant.
I was told that it was probably stress or something, but it felt yucky. I hate not feeling regular.
So I'm glad I read about this medicine people have been prescribed.
I need to go talk to my doctor ASAP.
