Oral thrush during pregnancy

by greenpixie, Jul 07, 2006 12:00AM
I recently finished taking antibiotics for BV.  Now, I think I've developed oral thrush.  I keep reading that you shouldn't take antifungal meds during pregnancy so what are my options for treating it?  I will be seeing my PCP later today, but wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this.  Also, is it possible that I would have also developed a vaginal yeast infection without symptoms?  I've never had a yeast infection, but so far nothing seems to be unusual in that area.  Then again, I didn't have any symptoms of the BV either so I'm not sure what to think.  Ugh!  This is frustrating!

If you didn't have any symptoms of BV can you tell me how they decided you had it?

I went in at 17 weeks b/c I had some light bleeding after going to the bathroom.  They found a polyp, which was the source of the bleeding and went ahead and checked my CM under the microscope for bacteria.  Polyps and BV are sometimes related, which was obviously true in my case.

Hmmm, Maybe I just read too much. I always think I have something, hee, hee. I think sometimes what if we have it and have no symptoms is it hurting the baby that it's not being treated? They said last week I had white blood cells in my urine and that they would send it to the lab..that was last Thursday?? I thought white blood cells meant infection? Anyways, enough about me. I have had yeast infections before caused by anitbiotics and eventually you WILL get symptoms and know it. Hope in your case you don't. Take care.Kellie

If you have oral thrush (and it is uncommon, even with antibiotics unlike vag thrush), the oral nystatin is rinse, gargle and spit type of med.  So it shouldn't be an issue.  Women who are pregnant can be treated topically for vaginal yeast, too.

What are your symptoms?  A simple white coated tongue may not be yeast at all.

Just got back from the DR and that's what it is alright.  :(  He gave me a Rx for nystatin rinse, but it says to swallow it.  I've got a call in to my midwife to see what she says about taking it.  From what I've read, it's only considered safe b/c there haven't been a lot of test done on pregnant women who take it.  Not sure how I feel about that.  I was also told that grapeseed oil works.  I'm going to look into that, too, I guess.

It's a pregnancy cat. C drug.  You are exactly right to call your MW for furthur instructions on what to do next.  Probably won't hurt you to swallow, but you are right to ask.

HA,HA,HA! First off there was an intern with the midwife I was seeing. She used some big word and asked me if I had any symptoms, I started talking about the change in my diet and (diahrrea sorry tmi)but, she seemed annoyed and said, no, does it hurt when you pee? What dr. uses the word pee? I said "NO" and she said do you pee a lot and not alot comes out? I said listen, I PEE ALL THE TIME AND HAVEN'T NOTICED. The 2 morons just looked at each other and said, "We'll send it to the lab". That was last Thursday. Haven't heard back. If you look in the web they talk about kidney, urinary and bladder infections with the white blood cells. I go next thurs. for my glucose test, maybe I'll find something out then. I probably have all 3, hee, hee.

yeah, i probably have all 3 as well!!!
they sent my "PEE PEE" off to the lab last friday and i have not heard anything so far. she tested it on the strip there in the office but sent it off to be 100%. the woman i saw is an RN and guess what???????? she asked me if i felt burning when i "PEE" LOL LOL!!! i said, nooo, not when (and i was about to say "urinate" but something made me say "pee"). how funny.
i think if you did not hear anything by now "all is well". the RN told me if i did not hear word then i am fine. its ONLY if i get a call. paranoia strikes again!

How dare you!  Just kidding. :)  It's not a problem at all.  I've already been to the DR and got the info I needed so ask away on this thread.

Thank you.  I hope I'm over it soon, too.  It's pretty gross.  I've been loading up on plain yogurt (bleck) so hopefully that keeps it away for good!

Hi-I am wondering if you ended up taking the nystatin rinse for your oral thrush problem and if not, what you ended up taking?  I am 12 weeks pregnant and I have cotton mouth and bumps (maybe 10) on my tounge and my GP prescriped nystatin (without performing any tests).  I would love to know what your midwife suggested you do to treat the problem.  THank you.
