Ovarian Cysts

My Dr. has told me I need to have an Ovarian Cyst removed w/ Laprascopic Surgery. My question,: I wz told the recovery time wld be 1-2 weeks. (of course, everyone is different). I am healty & active, not that I do not trust my Doctor, but I thought this surgrery (vs. more invasive) had a shorter rec. period. Also, he has scheduled the surgery in 1 week, should I be worried that he hz scheduled the surgery so soon. Thank you.

Don't feel stupid!  Just write all the questions down and ask them before your surgery.  It'll help you not to feel too anxious about it all.  If you surgery is in the next week or so just call the office and ask him/her to call you back to answer your concerns.

Another thing, too.  Even if you don't think you need it...for the first couple of days take your pain medication as directed.  It is MUCH better to stay ahead of the pain than to try to catch up.  I found that after a couple of days Tylenol and Advil worked much better and didn't cause the drowsiness.

You'll be fine!

Thank you for posting back. I feel stupid for not asking as many questions - at the Dr.s' office, but I always think of more questions driving home from the office. Thank s again.

Hi TessaT,
I had a cyst and ovary removed last year by laparoscopy.  I thought the same thing.  BUT  like people told me, I had major surgery through smaller holes.  Your body will recover slightly sooner than if you had a laparotomy (?...bigger inscisions) but you will still feel the effects for at least 2 weeks.  I was sore and fatugued for longer than I expected but did feel more like doing things after the 2 weeks.  NO lifting anything over 10 lbs, though for about a month or longer.  I was uncomfortable driving b/c I felt a little off balance but everyone is different in that respect.

My cyst was 4+ cm and b/c the doctor couldn't tell what was going on until he got in there and looked, he warned me that there was a 95% chance of the laparoscopy going as planned (out patient) and a 5% chance that I'd have to stay in the hospital.  It all went well and I had an endometriosis diagnosis.

Don't worry.  Your doctor sounds very proactive and you will feel better knowing the cyst is out.  Good luck!
