Ovarian cyst

Hi, I am a 23 yrs of age and have recently become aware of an ovarian cyst. I developed a 1 in. lump in the right lower pelvic reg. in March. Since than I have had 2 ultra sound exams that were approx. 3-4 monthes apart both showing the size to be 1 in. and unchanged. I have been put on 2 months of birth control to shrink the size but am experiencing side effects from the pill and still have discomfort in the R lower pelvic reg. My GYN advised to finish the prescription. Mean while she has not told me too many details about the results from either of the ultra sounds or what all my options are. She doesn't seem to believe the pain and discomfort is coming from the cyst but doesn't offer any other possible causes. I know my own body and I can feel a sm. mass in the R lower reg. upon palpating. This is the same place the pain is located. I need some answers and don't know what else to do. Please help me. Thanks.

I am 33 yrs old and have had problems with my period ever since I got in in Jr. High.  After the birth of my 2nd child in 2000 I started having sevier pain on the right side in my adomen.  This is weird, but one night during sex my husband said someting was wrong he could feel something.  I went in and had it checked out..I had a cyste the size of a soft ball.  I had to go in and have it drain..they did not find that it was cancerious.  I kept getting cysts, so my doc put me on birth control..6 weeks on 1 week off.  he said this would slow down my ovulation.  He told me that I have too over active eggs which was causing cystes on my ovaries.  So far the 6 weeks on 1 week off is working fine.

Thank you for your advice. I have already scheduled a meeting with another GYN and unfortunately it is not until the middle of October because I'm new patient. Mean while I don't know what type of cyst I have (fuctional or nonfuctional). I am very anxious and hope that the new GYN will take me and my patient history more seriously. I hope that I will get more details and better TX from the next GYN. Thanks again. I will talk with the GYN about your suggestions.

Have you ever had a diagnosis of PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome?  I used to get lots of cysts (also often on my right side) & my old OB-Gyn just treated that like it was unfortunate but normal.  I switched doctors & was officially diagnosed w PCOS & my doctor started me on Metformin (its a diabetes medicine- no I am not diabetic)& the cysts have shrunk in size & some have gone away completely.  I also have lost almost 50 lbs w/out trying.  It really helped.  The doctor said it was something to do with insulin resistance being common in people w PCOS.  I would talk with your doctor again, but if your doctor is unable/unwilling to answer your questions, I would switch doctors.  You might want to look for an OB-Gyn that specializes in PCOS or fertility issues (PCOS is one) as they are usually better at diagnosing problems like that & exploring many different options.  Good Luck.
