Ovary and Fallopian tube removal

Four days ago,(Friday the 8th) I had a tumor removed (5-6 cm) from my right ovary and also my right ovary and right fallopian tube were removed. This was done through laparoscopy surgery. I'm not really sure what hemorrhaging is but my menstrual cycle is not due until Thursday but I've been having rather severe bleeding since Sunday, each time I go to the restroom and large blood clots as well. Seems like an abnormal menstrual cycle to me but don't know if I should be concerned or just see if it passes. I've been using pads since Sunday night but never have any leakage on them. The bleeding only flows when I go to the bathroom. Any thoughts? I'm seeing the doctor later this week for a follow up. Also, have lots of pain in incisions and abdomen in general.

My strong suggestion is that you call your doctor's office first thing in the morning and tell the doctor's assistant/nurse practicioner, etc. what you have posted here. In my opinion, this pattern of bleeding is not normal.

The ureter (the tube that runs from the kidney to the bladder) might have been affected by the surgery process.  It is also possible that the urethra or the bladder itself have been affected.  Also, the bleeding might not be caused by any surgical, physical procedure per se, but by a serious infection.    I personally would not wait any longer for a medical opinion.

Hello 4ever,
All good advice, so did you call yet?  MV

I had exactly the same problem approximately one week following ovarian/fallopian tube removal for a large cyst.  An urgent phone call to my OB/GYN showed that it was just a very (VERY) heavy sloughing off of my intrauterine tissues (final period) and the fact it was worse when I went to the bathroom was because of pressure.  My doctor had me keep ice packs on my abdomen.  It *really* helped with the cramping, heavy bleeding, and pain.

Call your doctor.  I'm not suggesting that you do all of this and ignore something more serious I'm just telling you that the bleeding, pain, and cramping is not always necessarily the worst case scenario.

Hi, that happened to me, too.  I questioned my doctor about it and he wasn't concerned, only if it didn't stop after about 5-6 days.  I was soaking 3 to 5 pads for at least 2 days and then it tapered off.  The clots are normal, too, but just keep an eye on the bleeding.  I made daily notes of my bleeding so I could tell the doctor just exactly what was going on.  I am 4 weeks post op and I haven't had a period yet.  I had a cyst/ovary removed and still have my left ovary.  The bleeding may be a period.  I wasn't due for mine at the time I bled but I haven't had a period since, either.  The hormones are messed up b/c it takes a while for the remaining ovary to finally "get it" that it's the boss now.  I would let your doctor know just to be safe and keep some notes.

Take care,
Lori

I was so relieved this morning to check the post and have responses. Thank you all so much! I did end up going to the doctor and was told that I did way too much before I should have and now have one week on the couch with minimal moving just to give my body time to heal. Guess I should have really taken it easy right after surgery. Thanks for all the responses and concern. Tammy

Hi Tammy, I'm not sure just what you did 4 days into your post op recovery but please take it easy from now on.  From my own experience, you will think you are feeling better and you may be feeling better BUT your body still needs time to heal and it'll be a while.  Don't overdo it. I made that mistake and had setbacks.  It's good that you want to recover quickly.  A good mental attitude is helpful, but you had major surgery.  I still resist lifting and, like I said, I'm 4 weeks out.  If you do too much you'll pay for it for a couple of days.  Rest up and ask for help.  Oh, and be prepared for some ups and downs emotionally.  No one said anything about that to me.  It's one day at a time physically and emotionally.

Happy Recovery!

Hi Lori,
The day after my surgery, one of my sons turned 18 and that involved an outing into town but truly, all I did was walk around, stand and sit. That night, we had a dinner at church and of course my belly was not fitting into any pants and all my dresses were extremely snug so I spent about 2 hours in pain but trying on clothes, then ended up wearing a hideous dress that I had as a hand-me-down that I hated. Half way through the dinner, I was dieing!!! According to doctor's orders, I had not done anything that I considered streneous and I had not lifted anything heavy but wow, did I get a reality check!!! I've done very little today and the bleeding isn't as bad but hasn't gone away. Hope this is really  just a bad menstrual cycle and I don't end up starting tomorrow when I'm due. The crying has been pretty bad and my husband and I seldom argue but had our worst screaming match on Monday night!! Have since made up but all of this has been awful and not at all what I expected!! The doctor didn't think my tumor was malignant but the results aren't back yet. It's nice knowing that you are four weeks post-op with very similar surgery and what you are going through. Thanks for your help. Take care, Tammy

Hi Tammy, I'm sorry you and your hubby got into a fight.  This situation is hard on everyone.  Especially if you still don't know the results of your biopsy.  That adds stress to a stressful time. Glad you and he worked it out.  They (everyone else) feel somewhat helpless, maybe totally.  The doing too much, for me, was my mistake.  I stupidly thought I should be feeling better when in reality, I was only a week out.  My family just fell right into that thinking.  I had to take a giant step back and say, even to myself, that 'I just had surgery! let me hurt, be weak, cry, and just do what I can.'  I suggest a daily nap if you can.  The days get farther and farther apart that you'll need one but I'll snooze if I really feel the need, even now.

My cyst was endometriosis.  There were other spots of it around my abdomen but I consider myself lucky.  Some people with that disease really are in pain and I am not that bad.

Take care,
Lori

Hey Lori,
Today was a much better day. My 'fat jeans' are actually fastening so I have clothes to wear and don't really mind that they are not the jeans I was wearing pre-surgery. I've mostly sat for two whole days and it's not so bad. I try not to notice all the things I could be working on!! The hard thing is when everything is fine and I suddenly feel weepy about nothing or about everything. It's hard to do like you said and just say hey, I just had surgery, let me be weak, cry and just do what I can. I hate to be weak. So even though you still don't take it somewhat easy, do you feel almost back to normal now that you are four weeks post op? I feel out of whack for now.
Take care,
Tammy

'So even though you still don't take it somewhat easy, do you feel almost back to normal now that you are four weeks post op? I feel out of whack for now.'

Tammy,
Gosh!  You're doing well to put jeans on!  I remember trying and the button hit me just where my belly button incision was so I stayed in work out pants for about 3 weeks. I was in them for nearly a month before so I was SO sick of them!

Actually, this week is the first week that I feel the most normal. I still won't lift anything too heavy but I'm trying to concentrate on keeping my stomach muscles tight when I do things.  I get little twinges of pulling now and then, but that's it.  There are some strange back issues going on that weren't there before.  Always something, eh?

I know what you mean about having to look the other way when it comes to chores and stuff.  Today you are only 1 week out. I'd take it easy for another week. If you do anything just remember to take a break and sit down a lot.  At least you'll feel productive and not overdo it. Walking around the house is good for you, not the constant up/down, bending and lifting.  I was going to say listen to your body, which you should always do, but sometimes when you feel better you can do too much and pay for it later.

I finally started my period.  Was wondering when that would happen.  I'll be interested if it's a strange period.

When do you results come in?

Forgot to say congratulations on having your child turn 18! Is this your oldest?  My oldest is 17 today.  Lots of emotions going on with that.

Take care!

Hi Lori,
Yeah, I might be back in jeans but these are definitely my 'fat jeans' though and when I sit I sometimes have to unfasten them.

I hope your issues with your back are clearing up but it does seem like there's always a new twinge somewhere that makes no sense at all!

I put the dishes in the sink this morning but that's as far as I got. Seems like I've been running errands in town all day but my husband has been driving and it hasn't been too bad. I'm exhausted and hope I don't pay for this all day tomorrow!

I was really hoping you wouldn't start your period so I could have something to compare to and possibly not get mine again ever. My sister had just her right ovary removed about 20 years or so ago and never had another period. Hopefully I'll be like her but I am disappointed that you got yours. I think I must have gotten mine early and just had a really bad period after the surgery. I don't know when I'll get the results from the tumor but I guess since the doctor didn't think it looked suspicious, they might only notify me if it is malignant. I have another check up in January.

Happy Birthday to your 17 year old. My 18 year old is actually the middle child. My children are 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20. The 16 and 18 year old are not my natural birth children but are my children. The girls are 16 and 19, and the 19 year old is getting married in January. The 17 and 18 year old are graduating this year and the 20 year old is working and considering going to college. It's crazy here most days! How many children do you have and what are their ages?

Take care, Tammy

Hi Tammy...Girl...Glad you specified about the kids.  I thought you'd been real busy and had a child every year!  LOL  I'm sure things ARE busy, regardless!

I have 2 girls, 12 and 17.  Both have birthdays in Dec. (11th and 15th).  This time of year is busy and expensive! :)I love the ages they are and they are great kids.  I am blessed.

Hmmm, my period.  I'd call it more of a spot right now.  I'll let you know.  I think I wouldn't have been upset if I never started, either.

Good girl!  Sounds like you are slowing things down.  Glad your husband is helping you do errands.  Mine was able to as well.  I didn't feel comfortable driving for almost 3 weeks.  Mostly, the first 2 weeks I felt dizzy so I didn't want to drive.  I like the thinking that if the trip out the door isn't necessary, don't go.  Trying to remember that now.

I'm suprised that the results to your test take longer than a few days.  I had mine the 3rd day. I guess all labs are different, though.  The wait would be hard.

Happy Friday Night!

Hey Lori,

I also have two kids with birthdays in December and it is hard to juggle all the holidays and work in birthday celebrations at the same time. We always manage to get through it though.

I have been sitting forever it seems, and I get lightheaded when I'm up for very long but I am definitely taking it easier. I don't think I came up stairs hardly any at all yesterday. Mostly, I stayed downstairs and worked on Christmas cards. This is probably the first year that I actually sat down and completed all the cards at one time or for that matter, actually completed them all!! Last night, we went out briefly for a get together at church.

We have a vacation planned for Universal Studios, Medieval Times, and Wild Adventures in Orlando from the 22nd-24th of December. My surgery was suppose to be in November but it got bumped so now I'm now sure how the trip is going to be. If I get too tired, I can go back to the townhouse or get a wheelchair to ride in. That might be the only ride I get to go on anyway! :)I'm still looking forward to going. Take care, Tammy ***@****

Hi everyone.  Glad to hear everyone is doing better.  I Had my left side removed Nov. 30th.  I have not experienced any bleeding of any type is that normal?  I also have notice I am more hormonal.  Now I have been through alot the past couple of months so I'm trying to figure out if it's all situational or if removal is affecting my attitude?  oh and if it more likely is hormonal how long can I expect it to go on and is there any natural remedies to help?  Thank you so much for your time.  Michele

Hi there,
My surgery (right ovary/cyst removal.  I have a left ovary) was 11/13 and I just now had some bleeding, starting on the 14th of Dec.  I had been keeping a record of my irregularities since May and that was 31 days from surgery, 43 days between periods, had I not had surgery at all. It's not much of a period though...just spotting. The week of my surgery I bled pretty hard and the doctor thinks I was maybe "forced" into a cycle.  Judging from the dates, it seems so.  I posted a question about it and I got responses anywhere from 2 months until a period to never!  The hormones are out of whack until the remaining ovary decides to take over.  I'd talk to the doctor about your hormones.  Maybe they can recommend something until you get back to some kind of normal.

Good luck!

Thanks.  I know I posted it twice I didn't realize there was so many threads.  So how are you coming along now?  As far as back pain goes I wish I could tell you.  I heard chiropratic care can help I also swear by accupuncture but you have to try a few different ones out some will keep you coming back while others really do help.

I had surgery on Dec 18th. My right ovary was removed. I am bleeding and it is increasing each day. Is this normal? Will I need to take hormones and will my moods be all over the place? My tummy is swollen and bruised. How long is recovery? My doctor will not answer my questions.

I just had my left ovary and left tube removed and D &C  2 weeks ago. First 3 days was the hardest pain, 4th day I can walk better. 2 weeks later when pain is starting to slowly go away, I feel weak, no energy, sometimes dizzy and feel nauseated. I feel like I have no interest to do anything simple or doing things that was important to me before I had surgery. Also I am having some raw flesh in my stool, small chunks, almost like a liver like flesh. It is weird. My appetite is poor. But if there is food infront of me I can eat it. Just no motivation to eat. I had to extend my medical leave bec I still have some pain on incision and bec of this weird feeling, plus my type of work requires being on my feet all day and pushing. Had my biopsy result back, it is non cancerous, it is Endemetroisis and the reason my left ovary is removed is bec it was getting big and I have had pain when I menstruate for 3 years. I should have my period on Aug 2nd.... if I will have it. I had regular periods. I will be back to work in 2 weeks and I was hoping by now, I am somewhat recovered, but I am not. I miss my energy and I seem to be in someone else's body right now, the way it become after my surgery. I just hope my next periods will be pain free, to make the surgery worth having.

I had a laprascopy that turned into a laparotomy on September 3, 2009.  I was very surprised at the large incision and hospital stay as this was supposed to be an outpatient procedure. I had my left fallopian tube, a cyst removed and endometreosis that had spread to my bladder and colon burned off.  The recovery is much harder than I ever imagined.  I was told that I couldn't drive for one to two weeks.  It is day 11 and I still feel pretty bad. I can't drive, my head hurts constantly and I feel a little bit like my head is detached from my body.  I am able to get in and out of bed with ease for the most part.  I do have pain in the incision areas but it is manageable and I have not taken any meds other than ibuprofen since I was discharged on Sept 5th.  The hardest part is the depression from not being able to take care of myself.  No one prepares you for the emotions that come from having surgery.  I haven't been able to work and I have to rely on my family to take care of me.  I was able to do a load of laundry for myself yesterday and that wore me out.  If you are planning on having this type of surgery just be prepared for things you would never expect like depression, horrible gas pains, and a long recovery.  I am hopeful that I will be able to return to work in the next week but I understand that it can take 4 to 6 weeks to feel 100%.

I was wondering if anyone here can help me? 2 years ago i had a left ovary removed due to a complex mass. Before the surgery my life side hurt a lot and i was always bleeding. now for a couple months ive had the same symptoms again, not as severe though,on my right side, including the bleeding. ive been going to the doctor since june and had countless ultrasounds. there is a mass on my right ovary and polpys in my uterus. i have an appointment in 3 weeks to discuss a care plan with my doctor. i also had a blood test with a high count of ca-125. im scared im going to lose my other ovary. im only 25, and single. what are the chances that im going to have surgery again, and lose my other ovary? is this something i should be worried about, im really confused? help! any explanation of anything will be helpful

After being rushed to the hospital in severe pain last summer (15 months ago) I found out I had internal bleeding due to a cyst that ruptured on my left ovary. I then had emergency surgery. They ended up having to take out my left ovary and left tube. I still have pain but I think that is due to having severe endometriosis. I have been very irritable and just wondering if its due to hormones. Is this normal? Does having an ovary and tube removed affect your hormones that much? Just curious??? Does anyone have any advice?
