PCOS, late cycle, HSV-2, and Pregnancy

Diagnosis: 27 year old with PCOS; cycle regulation with Birth Control Pill; Pill stopped September 06, hoping to get pregnant with 1st child.

Last Menstrual Cycle: Oct 21-27 2006

Todays Date: 1/19/07

Lost Medical Insurance this year, make too much $$ to receive medical assistance. Prior yearly exams, all normal. Can't afford to see MD yet, just need advice. Will receive insurance in 60 more days.

Fact: 1st Possible HSV-2 outbreak Nov 24-Dec 9 2006. Treated with Valtrex. Called MD, explained symptoms and situation, she gave me samples.

Problem: My husband and I are trying to get pregnant. Due to late cycle we have taken 2 Home tests, (Dec 06 & Jan 07) both negative.

Questions:

1.  Could HSV outbreak cause the delayed cycle? I'm concerned because my last menstration was in October.

2.  What therapies/medications are available to provoke menstration?

3.  Should I restart my BC pill, hoping to regulate my cycle until I get insurace to see the MD?

4.  This is the ?? I'm hoping to find the answer to: If I'm not menstrating, does that mean that I am not ovulating, and can't get pregnant until I do menstrate and re-establish a "cycle"?

5.  Does anyone have any experience with Clomid that they can share?

6. Does anyone have any experiences with living with HSV-2 in general, and HSV-2 and pregnancy?

Any advice would help. I'm used to being able to go to a doctor, and right I just don't have the means too. By the time we get pregnant, we'll have health insurance again. Thanks in advance.

I also have POCS I guess for longer than i was actually diagnosed.  I am 30 and ttc for let's say a very long time.  I have been with my husband for 10 years ( married for 5), and for as long as i can remember being with him i wanted to get pregnant (whether he knew it or not).  Never used birth control, maybe once when we first stared seeing back in 97, but not in a long time.  I did about 5 rounds of the clomid, and one iui.  couldn't afford the invitro.  But i wanted to tell you ladies that as much as i wanted to get pregnamt, i am glad i didn't by using the drugs.  i was on provera to get my period, glucaphage, which made me sick, prometrium to thicken my lining, hsg injections, and God knows what else.  As of last august i decided to stop everything and take a moment.  i had gained about 20 lbs (mind you i am a small woman, so i didn't appreciate the weight gain, but did it in the name of getting pregnant).  I wanted to clear my body of all that meds i was taking for about 2 years.  i didn't get a period from aug. 06 - nov 06, and it was the worst.  i started having a continuous cramp in my side, and i bled, bled and bled, for almost 3 weeks, i mean it was terrible, the size clots were unreal, i went to the ER because i felt like i was losing alot of blood, or having a miscarriage, but i wsn't.  they told me it was all the drugs.  anyway, i am happy to tellyou i was introduced to  natural medicine.  i should have done it before, but i wanted to try the medical thing first (wasted much money, time, ect.).  I am not pregnant yet, but my body has done a 360 degree turn for the best.  The naturpath told me it would be at least 6 months before i should try to get pregnant.  I am now in the 6th month, i am not pregnant yet but i feel great!  i get my period on its own now without taking provera, and although t is irregular to most women, it is regular for me.  What i have learned is what makes your cycle regular is consistency, and although i get it twice a month, i am on an 18 day cycle (instead of a 28 day cycle), ladies do the math if you will.  My only issue is i don't know when i ovulate, and when i see my naturapath next month, i am sure he will tell me which days are my most fertile.  I have not only done a liver, kidney, and heavy metal detox, but I had mercury and pesticides on my ovaries, which the fertility specialist never told me.  The bottom line is they try to go around your problem to get you pregnant, without treating the problem, so if you are lucky enough to get pregant usising clomid, etc., when you want another child your problem is not fixed, so you'll have to spend all that money all over again.  Well, naturapaths try to correct the problem first, trying to make your overall health better.  Now this make take some time, and if you have some patience, i trust it will help.  Anyway, i just had to testify about natural medicine.  Ladies, don't rule it out, your overall health is important.
Patrice, still waiting ttc

Well, I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2004. I had an outbreak of HSV-2 in 2000 and since then I have been having recurrent symptoms which I treat with acyclovir cream, I don’t use the pills. For PCOS I was prescribed metformin which I stopped using after a while coz it made me feel real sick. I also used clomid, I guess I was on the six circle of 50mg then my GYN told me not to use it again since it might cause cancer in the long run. Since then I was drinking herbal teas to regulate hormones and taking vitamins and mineral supplements. By miracle, I got pregnant; I am now six weeks old! I’m so excited but I’m worried about the recurrent of HSV-2 during this period but I have been informed by my GYN that I will be having regular check ups during the time when I am nearing my delivery date and if it shows that there it might appear again  during the day I deliver then a C-section will be performed.

Hope this helps.

I also have PCOS and was disogised since 18 yrs old. I am now 27 yrs old -I never took any Metformin and Clomid. I've always had late cycles, and would come like every 3rd month, and had a hard time getting Pregnant. At 20 yrs of age, with a mircle that had happened,I got pregnant with my first daughter in 2000, and with no complications during pregnancy or after.(she is now 6 and half yrs old.) years went by later, I tried to get pregnant again and with no luck. So in 2005, another mircle had happened. I got pregnant again with my second Daughter, and with no complications or after pregnancy. (She is now 10 and half months old.) Am currently trying for a 3rd child, but i know it will be a long progress for us to have a third child or may never have a 3rd. i was blessed with 2 children.I just dont know how i got pregnant with 2 of them while i was on PCOS. They have told me i had 5% of conveiving. My drs and GYN are very surprised and were shocked, and told me it is very RARE to get Pregnant on PSCO with no help of taking Metformin or Clomid while u are trying to start a family. I guess I just got lucky. To those of you who are trying to become pregnant, just take it one day at a time and you might just get a surprise. Take care !

Hi,
I have PCOS too. I tried both Metformin and Clomid. Metformin made me feel very sick and nauseated. Clomid (50mg) did not work. But Clomid (100mg) made me ovulate this month! I think I could be pregnant and have the symptoms (plus my periods are 5 days due now), but the HPTs keep coming negative. I am losing patience so I'll take a blood test this monday. So, the answer to your question is that when you get your health insurance don't waste time... just go get some fertility drugs. All the best and lots of babydust your way!
