Pain from middle back to left leg

hi, this is a question about my mum. Today she was complaining of pains that she is getting from her lower back down her left leg and also her foot has pins and needles all the time, this has been for a few days. Anyone know what this is?

It could be a pinched nerve in her back (more than likely the sciatic nerve).
