Pain in arm 6 months after IV and when blood work is done now in same vein

6 months ago I had a hysterectomy, while in the hospital the nurses took 6 tries to get my IV in, which is unheard of becuase I am an easy person to get blood or IV's in, after I woke up from my surgery my IV site pain in my arm was more painful then the surgery. My arm burned, was cold, my arm hurt from my hands to shoulder and was very painful and numb. My arm still bothers me at times, but especially when I have to have blood work for my thyroid condition the same problems and pain happen from the same area? What would cause this pain, burning, etc....?

It is very strange that you're still having pain in your arm so far after your surgery. What may have happened is the IV went interestitial... but this would subside, at most, in a few days, and the pain would be very localized. Another possibility... perhaps the IV caused phlebitis - inflammation of the vein. Although, again, this would be quite localized. It doesn't explain the pain you experience in your arm. Did the IV go into the bend of your arm... where they normally would draw bloodwork? Another possibility is that they may have caused some trauma during the IV insertion and hit your tendon - but it definitely seems to be causing you alot of discomfort. Perhaps you should make an appt to see your doctor to have it assessed. Otherwise try heat/cold until you get it figured out. All the best!

Thank you Kendall for your comments, yes it was at the bend of the arm where they would normally draw blood work. This is why it has had me baffled because normally it would have quit being irritated after such a long period of time.
