Period is dark brown?

I'm 28 and I began having irregular periods February this year, I've had three in total. We started trying for a baby in June and fortunately (as I need to be regular for my own sanity!) I had a period August and now September but my September period is not the red blood I'd usually get. It started very dry and brown and now six days later is heavier and brown although it feels and looks more like heavy discharge with very dark brown clots in.
I did wonder at first if I had implantation bleeding but it has been going on for six days now and is getting thicker, not dying away. Plus I've had negative pregnancy tests (several) and no other pregnancy symptoms.
Has anyone else had this? Or know what it is? I will visit my doctor about it too, I have a scan booked next week to see why I've suddenly started getting iregular periods. Any advise greatly appreciated! x
