Periods and Depo

by frogge12, Oct 30, 2005 12:00AM
My next depo shot is due 11/8 but I am not going to get it as my husband and are going to try for our first child. I need to know what I should do now.  Should I go to the doctor and see if she could jump start my period so I'm not sitting around waiting for it to show up and risk getting it on my business trips?  Should I be a real woman and just go cold turkey and deal with the waiting?  Or should I get put on the pill to regulate me and try to lessen the cramping when my period does make it's appearance?  Which is going to be quicker and easier?

If you're going to try to have a child,it is a good idea to go to your doctor beforehand and get preconception counseling.  You will get a thorough exam, a medical and family history to look for any possible problems, vitamin samples, and it will be a good time to ask questions such as yours.

It can often take a long time after depo to conceive.

I stopped using depo last summer before my wedding. I switched to a lo-dose estrogen pill in order to still have pregnancy protection and also to "kickstart" my period. My period returned the month after I stopped depo. In January of this year, I stopped taking the pill because it just didn't agree with me (which is why I switched to depo in the first place). I've had a regular monthly period ever since. My cylce can run anywhere from 24-25 days though. I would talk with your doc before you do anything, since if you do want to start the pill, you'll ned a script. Good luck!

I also took the Depo shot up until November of last year...due to many complications I quit taking it and switched to a B/C pill.  This allowed me to get a regular period because on the Depo I was having a period for 3 days then off a day then back on for 3 days.  My husband and I just decided about 2 months ago that we are ready for a family so I stoped my B/C.  Because of the Depo shot it may take us a while to conceive due to it staying in your system so long.  Best advice is to talk to your doctor so you can get vits..etc.  And it may take awhile to actually become pregnant because of the depo but dont let it fustrate you.  Best of Luck!!

I was on Depo for 2 years and finally went off it about 8 months ago.  As soon as I was off it I started using the ortho-evra B/C patch.  My periods started and I stayed on that for about 3 months, as soon as I stopped using and got pregnant immediatly!  Hope that helps.
