Positive Pregnancy results but nothing on ultrasound

I should be about 7 weeks pregnant.  I took two HPT, both positive, had a Quant blood test indicating 4-5 weeks pregnancy.   They suspected an ectopic pregnancy and that accounted for my last two ultrasounds.  My question is - is it possible to have a false positive?  The nurse said I was an anomaly, that she'd heard of false positves but never knew it to be true.  I'm not menstruating, my urine and blood say I'm pregnant, but they can see nothing on ultrasound.  What could be happening?

This is not meant to be rude whatsoever, but are you overweight?  I was thinking that if you're overweight then that's probably why they're having trouble seeing it with u/s.  Just a thought...

I'd say the chances of hpts and bloodtest showing positive but not actually being pg would be next to impossible.  I'd say you are pg, but it's too early to see anything on u/s.

Also, keep insisting on more u/s until they rule out an ectopic!  You don't want that going undiagnosed!

No, not overweight.  I'm about 5'6 and 120 lbs.  and at this point just baffled.  I don't know what to believe at this point, but you're definitely right about staying on top of it until I get some answers.  Thanks for your post:)

When I was diagnosed with an ectopic, it was based on what they couldn't see on the u/s. No sac or anything, but hcg kept going up. I didn't think they could rule out ectopic with an u/s, but I may be wrong. Are they certain that it's not developing in your tube?

Hello look I am no expert either but when you say she did nnt see anything you mean nothing no yolk sac of northing. I had an ultra sound done at about 5 weeks and they say a yoolk sac and a little white speck the size of a (.) tahat later turned out to be my baby I had another ultrasound done ladt week and saw and heard a heart beat. So just keep checking up with your doctor. Also because in 200 sorry my backspace does not work but in 2000 i was almost three months pregnant and had an ultrasound and the tech did not see nothing and turn out I had a molar pregnancy just one that went bad but still had all the symptons and tests blood and urine showed i was pregnant. Good luck hope for the best and keep us posted.

I was sent for an ultrasound and they couldn't see anything on mine either except abdominal fluid. They suspected an ectopic then but ended up being nothing... Just that I wasn't as far along as they had suspected. They say they can't really see anything until 5 wks so maybe you are just earlier than you thought.

Went in today for more bloodwork, my doctor says we'll wait and see.  Maybe it's a matter of my not being as far along as I should be.  But if my numbers come back high, she's going to assume an abnormal pregnancy.  Thanks to everyone who posted, hopefully everythings fine and just not far enough along.

I just got back from the doctor and I am an emotional mess. I took two pregnancy test and was suppose to be pregnant. The Ultra Sound showed nothing :( They said it could be a chemical pregnancy or too early to tell i am leaning towards chemical pregnancy.

I took 2 home pregnancy tests 2 weeks ago and both were positive. I went to the doctors on Monday (today is Tuesday) and the nurse practitioner did not see anything on the sonogram (vaginally). So, they did another pregnancy test there, and it showed up positive. So, now Im freaking out because I dont know how far a long I am, my periods are irregular and I dont even remember the last one. Im thinking the worst but hoping for the best. She sent me for blood work, one on Monday, another on Wednesday, and another sonogram on Friday with another doctor.
Ive looked up symptoms of ectopic pregnancies, since that wasnt ruled out yet, and Im not having pain, just big time cramping.
I wish I could speed up time to Friday, and I have my fingers crossed that its just too early, and we will see something on Friday.

I ALSO TOOK A HOME TEST FRIDAY CAME BACK POSITIVE THEN HAD BLOODWORK DONE AND IT TOO CAME BACK POSITIVE, BUT I WENT FOR MY ULTRASOUND AND NOTHING SHOWED UP JUST THE THICKINING OF MY UTERUS, ANDTHE OVRAIN CYST, SO MORE BLOODWORK WAS TAKEN TODAY.  I'M SO NERVOUS AND SCARED I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO AND I HAVE THE CRAMPING WHICH THEY SAY IS NORMAL.

I have the same exact situation you wrote about in October.  What happened with you?  
I took a home pregnancy test and it was positive this past Sunday.  Went to the Doctor on Monday, took another urine test:  positive.  Blood test: positive.  HCG level 1700.  Ultasound: nothing but a thickly lined uterus and a cyst.  
Today:  HCG level did not double.  It only went to 1900.  I am having another ultrasound on Friday.  
I was told it is either too early in my pregnancy to see anything on the ultrasound or I do not have viable pregnancy.....
Please let me know what happened with you.

some cysts can give postive pregnancy tests
its either a cyst or a miscarriage. (being that your hcg levels did not double)

Hi, i wanted to say that back in 2004 i had 2 positive pregnancy test and when i had a vaginal ultrasound done and they said it was weird that they could see my baby good because i was only 3 weeks alone and usually it takes up to 6 weeks to show the baby. I just wanted to say that if you baby does not show on the ultrasound it might mean you are before 6 weeks pregnant, but in my case i am rare. Well good luck to you all.

no...they would still be able to see stuff. like the two sacs. i had an ultrasound done at 5weeks 5 days and there was everthing and a tiny dot....my son

I went in yesterday with pain - I was told it was probably an ovarian cyst.  Anyway, I went in to see the doctor.  He said it was a cyst by feeling on my stomach.  Then he had me give him a urine sample.  That came back positive for pregnancy.  Then he sent me in for an ultrasound.  The lady could see a cyst on my left side, but saw nothing in my uterus.  She said it could be too early to tell.  
I don't know how they can tell that I am pregnant since I just had my period on February 22nd.  
Someone said that cysts can give a positive on a pregnancy test.  Is this a proven thing?  Has anyone encountered this problem?

SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME!!  Hcg said I should have been 5-6 weeks, but transvaginal u/s showed nothing ANYWHERE, so they labeled me ectopic!!  A week later a repeat u/s and they saw sac and yolk, but no fetal pole so STILL couldn't say it was a viable pregnancy....FINALLY 2 weeks later They saw "baby" growing in there and saw and heard heartbeat...140bpm, and I was then by ultrasound 7 weeks 4 days pregnant.  Sooooo, what had happened was I was NOT as far along as the hcg levels showed I should have been....instead of 5-6 weeks I was only really 3 weeks and it was just TOO early to SEE ANYTHING anywhere to begin with.  I am now 10 weeks 5 days along, and first all seems perfect!  HANG IN THERE, time is torture!!!  But, that's all you can do at this point, wait!  Best to you...HUGS!

ALL OF YOUR REPLIES HAVE REALLY CALMED ME AND I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE.

TODAY IS 10/30/09, AND AFTER TAKING 2 EPT'S AT HOME AND 1 AT THE DOC'S OFFICE, THEY WERE ALL +. AND WHEN I HAD THE ULTRASOUND THEY SAW NOTHING NOWHERE. SHE SAID EVERYTHING INSIDE WAS NORMAL, SO MENTALLY I FREAKED, I WANTED TO CRY , BE MAD, OR ANGRY. BUT WITH THANKS TO THE NURSES WHO DREW MY BLOOD, THEY CALMED ME DOWN WITH ALOT OF HOPE. BUT I WAS FRIGHTENED BY THE THOUGHT OF AN ETOPIC, I HAVEN'T HAD ANY CRAMPING IN THE PAST 2 WEEKS, I'VE HAD SOME DISCOMFORT OR REAL BLOATED FEELING. AND ALL THE SYMPTOMS OF PREGNANCY, I THANK GOD! BECAUSE NOW I CAN HAVE PEACE OF MIND AND FAITH THAT MY BABY IS INFACT THERE, JUST HIDING, LOL. SO THANK'S TO EVERY1, AND GOOD LUCK AND CONGRADULATIONS TO ALL THOSE WHO ARE IN THE SAME SITUATION.

Hi ,

I had spotting yesterday .so i went to doctor she did a vaginal ultrasound and nothing found in uterus.

she said the baby is not growing so she is recommending to do D&C.

As per my last period i should be 8 weeks 3 days by today.

I am not sure what i have to do ?either i have to wait for 1 or 2 weeks to do another ultrasound or go for D&C.

please share if any body has same symptons
