Pregnancy after methotrexate

I was treated for an eptopic pregnancy in August. I was given 1 shot of methotrexate to dissolve the pregnancy. Has anyone conceived after been given methotrexate? How long did they tell you to wait to conceive and how long did it take you to conceive? I am VERY anxious to try again!

the same thing exactly happened to me last week! how did your situation turn out!

My hcg was down to 61 and they thought i was 6 weeks - although i could have been just 2 cause i had a light bleed when my period was due on march 19th. Went to EPU and they said i had miscarried had a scan and they said cervix was closed but no sign of sack. The next day hcg rose to 68. they monitiored me for 5 more days and by then levels rose to 388! I had to go in for for a scan on monday but on sat i had awful pain and so went to a&e. I was kept in they thought it was either a m/c or ectopic. Anyway the next day levels rose to 566. They scanned me and said that i am a mystery. they found no sack or baby in womb, tubes, ovaries - so classed it as an abnormal pregnancy and said it must be in my blood!!! That meant they did not know where it was, as far as i was concerned.

So they brought me back for methotrexate injections 2 in my left bum cheek and 1 in my right and now had to have bloods done days 4 and 7. I am on day 4 today and i am bleeding with bright red blood!!!!!!!!

I still wonder if it was too early but they said the numbers were not doubling so i must have been miscarrying!!

I have these fears, but I try to put them out of my mind. They can't possibly do any good. I hope for the best and pray for one day (maybe soon) to have another child. I believe everything happens for a reason, though I assure you this one has left me in shock. I am going to hope in the future and see what happens.
I don't know that my cycles are irregular just yet. I have only had two since. My doctor said the first one back would be weird, and it was, but the second one seemed mostly normal, maybe a little heavy. I am trying again starting now. My doctor said I would be ovulating this weekend - or so they thought - so I am going to try. We have no guarantees in life, but I'm going to pray and try to have faith and try again. :) A positive outlook can't hurt.
My ectopic was on my ovary, so I am not sure if there is scar tissue there or not. It was treated with Methotrexate and it is gone, but I suppose it could potentially leave scar tissue behind. I don't know, but I do know that I want to believe the Lord will give me another baby someday.
Try not to worry too much. It's counter productive. I have just decided to maintain a healthy diet (one the supposedly helps regulate hormones), exercise and focus on the many blessings in life rather than the sorrows. And with patience and prayer...maybe I'll be a mother again soon.

Hello! I have one daughter who is 4 now. First pregnancy was normal, happy, healthy, etc... then on January 25, 2010 my world came crashing down when I learned that my second pregnancy was ectopic. I had absolutely no risk factors for this. I'm not 35, have had no PID or STD's, no endometriosis, etc. The doctors just said "we're sorry, sometimes this just happens." So now I am terrified to try again, for fear that the same thing will happen again. There is no follow-up treatment other than the blood tests. Finally today my level was 0, but I was very strongly cautioned to not get pregnant this month because of the lingering methotrexate. Has anyone else had a successful pregnancy after an EP? My cycles are very irregular and I worry that only my right side is working properly, and the EP was on the right side. If an EP leaves behind scar tissue, how can an egg get through? I am so scared.

Thank you for your response! My email didnt even tell me I had one!
Well, even though my levels reached 310, I was told I had to get the shot, by a new OBGYN, and I did, last Thursday. This Monday the levels went down by 10. Yesterday, it stood at 130. So the shot worked. Horrible side effects for me but it could be psychosomatic. I am traumatised by not only the loss of our baby but by what ensued - a total nightmare. Now I have to get back down to 0 and from then, wait 3 months before TTC. I have two lovely daughters and even though we planned on having a big family (two more kids) I think that if its meant to be for me to have these two alone, then so be it, I guess its more me being terrified to try again. My husband is adamant we will have more though.
I was also told I have a very tilted uterus and want to talk to my doc to see how this affects fertility. I know I had it with both pregnancies and it 'righted' itself as the babies grew.

I am only an opinion, but if you don't feel secure with the doctor's decision ask for a second opinion. Unless it's life threatening with signs of ectopic or otherwise complicated pregnancy. There is nothing wrong with asking for more information before making a serious decision.
Unfortunately I can't just tell you what's right or wrong, I don't have that ability. I wish that I could.
I hope this helps.

"Hi
My LMP was December 26, 2009 but Im not 100% sure. It could have been on the 18th, or even the 28th!. On January 26th I took an EPT, which was positive. Three tests later we also all positive. I had sore breasts, nausea and tiredness at this point.
On the 3rd of February, I woke up to mild cramping, which was common for me, and when I wiped after using the bathroom saw pink streaks. I immediately went to the ER. they did bloodwork and my hCG level was 130, which the ER doc, not an OBGYN, said was very low. did a pelvic and noted the cervix was 'slightly open' -he diagnosed it a threatened miscarriage.
Went home, rested, no more bleeding.
Woke up the next morning to period like bleeding, bright red. Went to my doctor, a PCP, and she said I was miscarrying. Did more bloodwork. Levels came back at 170.
Went to a perinatal specialist, did the vaginal ultrasound, didnt see anything, and was told I miscarried. More bloodwork that day, levels came back at 267. Now the doc wants me to come in ASAP for methodrexate shots...but I dont know if it is an ectopic (no symptoms to that effect) and am worried that it may be a viable pregnancy, just too early to detect, or that I miscarried adn the levels are just going slightly up before going down? I dont know what to do. I have more bloodwork tomorrow, and another pelvic and ultrasound."

Hello all,
I have stumbled onto this site looking for woman who may have children with birth defects as a result of taking methotrexate. I have read (most) of this thread and I am truly sorry for those of you who have lost a child through miscarriage. Unlike the majority of you here I was given methotrexate for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. I read my client information sheet forward and backwards. I knew that it was "bad" during pregnancy, but subsequent to the birth of my child I have come to learn a lot more and am frustrated with my Dr.
Also to help with the folate debate going on... MTX does remove the folate from the body, in the use of an abortion that is the goal. It will prevent the baby from forming by lack of folate, and lack of growth (as I understand it). However it does not always work. The most "effective" use is between 6-11 weeks, with unknown effects later in pregnancy. There is a WASH-OUT period from as little as one complete cycle to 3-6 months depending on which study you look at.
My last dose was 15mg about 3 months prior to the conception of my (now 11 month) son. I was treated as a regular pregnancy, no one told me to take extra folate. No one gave me an extra ultra sound to ensure the proper growth of my child. I had no idea of the danger I had put my son in, after 10 years of "non-specific" infertility. I would have walked across glass in my bare feet, if the DR. had told me to do it.
My son was born with a toe malformation, he is missing the "pinky" toe of his right foot. He hss also fallen off the chart as far as both weight and height. In addition he has yellow skin. My Dr. didn't even take a second thought about the MTX because when I mentioned it he said that I took it 3 months prior so it's not a factor. My relentless search has caused me to see that it indeed is a factor and have an appointment on Monday with a different DR.
So I am imploring, any woman who has taken Methotrexate, for whatever reason, and feels as though their child has an abnormality no matter how small, please respond to this thread. The more information I can get the faster I can send my DR. down the right path or at least have it ruled out.
Thank you.

Hi
sorry for everyones loss but I have some great information in regard to the waiting time for methotrexate.  I had an ectopic in November last year and was given 2 shots of metho.   Basically I did so much research on forums like these (very helpful info) and the metho injection strips your folic acid therefore 3 months for 1 injection and 6 months for 2.  Well me being impatient wanting to try again found out you can go to your GP and ask for a Full Blood Count including white and red cells aswell as a blood test to check your folic acid.....  I was so excited to find out that 2 months and 2 weeks my bloods were back to normal and I have been given the green light to start again.  I will wait till May though (6 months) as I booked a holiday to Hawaii then and I would like to try surfing.   Good Luck to everyone trying again and get your blood tests (your body is an amazing thing and heal quite quickly)

Just got this very useful peice of info from the ectopic pregnancy trust "It is especially important to wait for three months before you try again after you have been treated with one injection of Methotrexate, as this medicine can alter your metabolism and might interfere with the cells of a developing pregnancy in a negative way. If you require two injections of Methotrexate a week apart, speak with your health care providers and establish what they believe to be the safest waiting time before you try again. Some doctors suggest a 6 month wait after two separate doses, given 7 days apart, of Methotrexate."

I agree - there really doesn't seem to be any facts on how long to wait after a dose of methotrexate before trying to conceive again. I've spent hours looking on the net and more often than not they advise waiting at least 3 months if you've had one dose and 6 months if you've had two. I'm sticking to that advice. The only thing i'm not so sure about is when to introduce folic acid again as ideally you should be taking it at least 3 months prior to trying but obviously you can't take folic acid if you have a dose of methotrexate.

Hello.  I had an ectopic in Feb. 2005.  My Dr. told me to wait 6 months so we did and got pregnant as soon as we tried, but it ended in m/c.  I ended up having to go to a fertility Doctor and when 3 IUI's didn't work the doc suggested surgery.  I had the surgery in March 2007 and he remove a bit of Endomitriosis and some adhesions in my tubes.  He said he seen me getting pregnant within 6 months.  Well, Sept was the 6th month and I am 5w5d pregnant.  I was so worried about and m/s or Ectopic so I went to the ER so they could make sure everything was ok because I was having some menstrual type cramping and some throb like pain on my right side.  Well, everything looks good.  I go back Oct. 17th to see the baby and hear the heartbeat because the Dr. said that I was to early for me to see it when I was at the R.  So, don't worry.  It may take a while, but it will happen...Goodluck toall.....

Okay, so your dr did laparoscopic surgery, right? That's great that he saved your tube...wonderful, actually. If your tube was close to rupturing, then it was too late for methotrexate. He might want you to wait a little while before ttc since that procedure involves a small incision in your tube. I had some bleeding after my ectopic, but I also had a D&C before I got the shot (two D&C's in one year- lucky me) to rule out any interuterine tissue that might have been causing my hcg to go up. The only reason my dr suspected an ectopic early on, is because he started having me come in for u/s early on. Since I had the blighted ovum earlier this year, he was keeping a close eye on me right away. Which is good, because if he hadn't been watching, mine could have burst. Well good luck with your dr's appt this Friday. Sometimes, the dr's don't address the issue of ttc right away, because they want to handle one thing at a time. Now that you have a follow-up with him, I'm sure he'll answer all you questions and address your concerns. Good luck!

Shishee- I started ttc right at a year ago. Found out I was pg around last Christmas, but discovered at 12 wks that it was a blighted ovum. My dr wanted me to wait two complete cycles before ttc again after that...being 12 wks along, he wanted to give my body time to heal. I waited 3 cycles, and found out July 4 that I was pg again. I felt like something was wrong the 2nd time, though- I had some bleeding, and it turned out to be ectopic.

Suni- it varies as to how long it takes hcg to go to 0. If someone chooses to m/c naturally, the levels will come down shortly after the m/c is complete. With my blighted ovum, I had a D&C, so they pretty much came crashing down after that. With the methotrexate, I had to have my blood drawn every week until they went to 0, and that took 5 weeks. So, it depends on how your dr chose to resolve the ectopic. You say you still have both tubes, so what exactly did your dr do? Was any surgery done?

I did have surgery to remove the sac. I was in a lot of pain when I went into the hospital. I was also bleeding pretty heavy. I was eight weeks pregnant but what the Dr told me was my tube was about to rupture and if I had gone to the hospital later it would have. So, he said that he saved my tube. I don't know where the bleeding would have come from if my tube had not ruptured. I have a DR's appointment this friday and I will tell him my concerns.

You know that I have not had the shot like you but never the less after a miscarriage or EP, how long does the levels take to get down to zero? I wouldn't wait until December either like your DR said. It it was up to me. I would start trying now, but I can't. Some people have said in 2 weeks. Others said in 5 weeks. I had the Ep last week and it aleady feels like forever.
Lots of prayers to you. Love, Suni

Thanks for your comment. Yes my HCG is at 0. I got the methotrexate on Aug 26. My level went to 0 by Sept 20. The doc told me to wait till Dec. I don't think so. He was an idiot! I am waiting for 2-3 months before I try again. How long have you been trying?

Have your hcg levels gone back to 0? My doctor wanted me to wait, because he scheduled an hsg test for me. But before that could be done, my levels had to get back to 0. That took 5 weeks-my hcg was around 7000 when I had the shot on 7/19. The test was done on 9/23, and was given the green light by my dr after that. If your dr doesn't plan on testing you, than I think you just have to wait until your hcg is back to 0. But your dr should tell you exactly how long you need to wait. Good luck!
