Premature Grey Hair

Ok, I'm not sure if you are the ones to ask but I've been told that getting grey hair very young (like early 20s) is a sign of PCOS.  Do you know of anyother reasons that a female would start going grey at such a young age?

Thanks for your comment. I struggle with this issue as a 23 year old and find it good to know that you live with it proudly. My dad is always telling me to let it be, but I have never given it a true thought. Thanks for your words!

Be thankful you have it . i started getting white hair in my teens. My mothers side all thru generations have white hair. her 16 brothers and sisters have white hair on both my grandfathers and grandmothers side. All German. i decided not to be a slave to dye.
you will not believe how fmany people in my life have commented on how beautiful my hair color is. they walk up to me. they ask in lines, for years and years. the women you see boldly going white now...i've always been. it is now chic to leave your hair alone.  my sisters.....they have dyed it and always have white roots and hate the maintenance.  i on the other hand, have had it long, now have it short and Got 2 B glued spiking gel. i have people years ago tell me you've given me courage. 4 days ago while pumping gas, a black couple leaving the gas station pulled along side me and he says my wife says to tell you she loves your hair!
my girlfriend laughs, for 30 years now people walk up and say can i ask you...and she says, "Yes, that is her real color".
it's genetics. it's beautiful. it's white...and still this fine dark hairs here and there and more on the bottom.  if i dyed it no one would ask me and admire it. People say, if I knew i would look like you I'd let my hair go grey.  hey, you don't know unless you let it.  and don't forget the light spray of "Flasher" , it makes it glisten and sparkle!
Be you!

I have very fair skin and my hair "is" black.  My Mom found my first silver hair when I was 12.
By the time I was a junior in high school, I was coloring my hair because other students would yank out hairs from the back of my head in the hallways and I got tired of it.
Two years later in college (age 18) I was coloring my hair every two weeks due to the silver roots.  After a year of this I just gave up and have never looked back.
I am 34 and am about 80% silver (which is all on top) and 20% black (around the face, sides, and nape of the neck).
Here's the funny thing: I have PCOS and last year my thyroid shut down.  I never heard the PCOS - gray connection before, but my grandmother had PCOS just as bad a me and she started graying at 17.  The only part that would not fit with that theory is that my little brother (who has dark brown hair) started graying around 22 and certianly does not have PCOS, but hereditary hair patterns are passed down maternally, so it would follow that color would do the same.

I started haveing stray white hairs in high school and i would pull them out because they were always at the front of my hair and they stick up.  I have jet black hair so they were very easily seen.  by the time I hit 20 I had to stop pulling them before I went bald.  With dark hair like mine they show up maybe if I had lighter hair it would be harder to see them.  I also have a uncle that was completely grey by the time he was 25 so I guess it is genetic.  This year (26) I finally started coloring my hair to hide it.  I found out I was pregnant before I could get it colored again and now I guess I will just be white and black haired for he next few months!

My mom started getting grey in highschool. By the time i was born she was totaly grey. My kids and genetics have given me many, many, many grey hairs. It sucks! They stand out like crazy ,shinning like a full moon. Most people with dark hair will go grey faster. I don't know why, but they do. My brothers were totally grey in their early 30's. i will turn 30 next year. BUT --- A good bottle of color is my best friend!

I definitely think that Vickie did her homework.  I have a friend at my daughter's school who has this one BIG streak of grey hair right down the center of her part.  It is very entertaining, and I've asked her why she doesn't color it.  She said if she colored it, what would people have to talk about?
In my personal opinion, genetics have a lot to do with it.  Fortunately, I've colored my hair for MANY years, so I wouldn't know if mine were grey or not.

WOW Vicki you really did your homework.  Thanks.  I'm not greying yet thankfully.  My bestfriend has PCOS and she has all the regulars, unfortunately even the feritlity issues.  But she started to grey( well actually white hair) and her doc had said that it was from PCOS it was a common symptom.  I have never read anything about it and I've searched it.  I just wanted to know if anyone could shed more light on this.  Thanks ladies. And I've had only a few pregnancies in my days.  But if greying is a side effect I might want to think about stocking up on the hair dye ;)

One little known cause is frequent pregnancies, but I have no idea if this applies to you. Have you been pregnant before? Do you have lots of children?

As we get older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent color - like gray, silver, or white - as it grows. As people continue to get older, fewer and fewer of these pigment cells will be around to produce melanin, and the hair will eventually look completely gray.

People can get gray hair at any age. Some people go gray at a young age - as early as when they are in high school or college - whereas others may be in their 30s or 40s before they see that first gray hair. How early we get gray hair is determined by our GENES. This means that most of us will start having gray hairs around the same age that our parents or grandparents first did.

Other things have been linked to getting gray hair earlier in life. Poor nutrition (especially not getting enough B vitamins), thyroid problems, anemia, and even smoking can all contribute to the body's aging process that causes gray hair. Some diseases, such as AIDS or treatments for cancer, can also make people's hair turn gray while they are young.

The most widespread hormonal problem in women with excessive facial hair is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a common endocrine disorder, which affects approximately 6 percent of women of reproductive age throughout the country. A woman diagnosed with PCOS does not ovulate regularly and, therefore, has irregular periods. These women tend to be obese but not always. The woman may also be considered

Genitics, stress, or maybe that is just the way you are. It is not that rare or odd.
