Problem conceiving after Mirena

I had Mirena for about 11 months.I bleed for the first 3 months straight and doc put me on some pill (only had to take for 5 days)to regulate a period(while i had mirena in)and that worked! I had it removed on May 9, 2007., because my husband and I wanted to try for baby #2. I Had regulated periods every month after the removal. My last period was August 2 and lasted 7 days (normal) and I have not gotten a period since. I took 7 hpt all neg and a blood test about 3 weeks ago which was also neg. The doc said the the hormones were probably still in my body and If I don't get a period by the end of october then she wants to do some more blood work, eventhough Mirena claims you can conceive as though you weren't on any birth control method at all. I thought it was all in my head and I would surely get my period after the blood test result, and still no period. When i got pregnant with my first son I was on birth control pills(Loestirn28) for 7 years and it only took me 2 months to conceive after I stopped hte pill,  so I don't think any hormones would still be in my body from Mirena being it is 4 1/2 months after the removal! I was wondering if anyone else had any of the same probs when they were trying to conceive after the IUD.

I was on BC (Ortho Tri Lo) off and on throughout college up until March 2007 (so about 10 years), due to frequent ovarian cysts and heavy periods. It was nice because my periods weren't too bad and were regular.

My husband and I began TTC in July 2007; we succeeded in October and I had a healthy baby in July 2008. At my six week follow-up, I had the Mirena put in. I had a medium period at first, followed by light period for two months, then no periods until I got the IUD removed in August 2009.

As soon as I got my first period (September), we began TTC number two. Here it is February, and we are still trying. I thought for sure that I was pregnant in January, but my period started five days early. My last three periods have come either early or late. I honestly do not think I ovulated in Jan, and not sure if I did this month either. Going by charts as to when my "prime time" was, it should have been last week ... when I had the stomach flu.

I'll know next week if AF is coming for a visit. If we aren't pregnant this month, we're going to hold off for a few months to make sure we don't have a Dec/Jan/Feb baby (too many holidays and birthdays in those months!). It's getting frustrating taking this long, and every month I get my period or a BFN, I'm ready to quit. I know sometimes it takes a while, but we're not getting any younger!

I wanted to write and tell you my experiences after the removal of my mirena last June.  I got married in August and thought that I would fall pregnant pretty quick - little did I know that my body had been so used to being 'infertile' that I would have a long journey ahead (still not pregnant having been trying a year this month and at 36 want to hurry up and get pregnant).

I had had 2 Mirenas one after the other lasting 8 years!!!  I was really sure that I had got my contraception covered until I wanted to concieve and was happy with the Mirena until I had it out.  When I had the Mirena I had very little period each month - but still bled.  After the Mirena was out I had a bit heavier period and then every month after that for the first 9 months it was really light - red blood for about 1 -2 days and then a brown trail off for a day.

Other things that I experienced at the beginning were really sore breasts - I thought I must be pregnant - not so - I heard from a doctor friend that as well as the Mirena thinning my womb lining that I had probably stopped ovulating all together!!!  I saw another friend for some reflexology and she said I was really flat hormonally - as if I had had a hysterectomy!!!  She spent about 3 months (around month 6 - 9 post removal) getting my hormones buzzing away and unfortunately she now has emigrated to Australia so I haven't had any more treatments.

I was tracking my ovulation with an ovulation microscope and cheep LH urine strips - but was never sure of the results - so I bought a Persona ovulation monitor (it is marketed as a contraception device - I am English you may have this or similar product if you are US based).  For the past 3 months I have been definately ovulating and one month - testing for pregnancy a few days early I got a faint positive - but then had a period.  It was a really thick sticky brown red one - very dry - and I went to the family planning clinic - they said - just keep trying - don't stress it could take up to 18 months - you are ovulating and having periods its all good.

The medics in my opinion just spout that your body is capable of getting pregnant straight after removal and that is that.  Last month I had a much more normal period - that was July - it had taken a year for my body to give me what looked like a normal period!!!!!  I think the problem may be that the quality of the womb lining is poor after being so thin or non existant for how ever long you had the Mirena and that even if you ovulate and conceive then maybe implantation does not happen.  It was this idea that got me looking at ways to make my uterus more healthy.

I have recently been taking a herbal tincture 'Womens Health Tonic' as a fertility aid which you can get from 'iherb.com' for about $10 (I have it shipped with my 'Macro Greens').  The tincture has herbs reputed for centuries to promote health of the female reproductive system, strengthen the uteus and help to prevent miscarriage.

There is also a book that I have just ordered from Amazon "Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year (Wise Woman Herbals Series: No. 1)  "Susun S. Weed; Paperback; which gives you loads of info and advice on safe herbs to help promote fertility and for throughout pregnancy and post birth.

I also recommend that you try hypnotherapy CD's there are a few to chose from - just search on Amazon or ebay for hypnotherapy for fertility.

Stay positive guys - the body is a delicate system - we need time and patience and to try a few alternatives to restore normality - and we will succeed (fingers crossed) - This month I have a few pregnancy symptoms - swollen breasts, bubbly feelings and cramps in the tummy - I hope that my hopes are confirmed in 8 days time xxxxxx

I had my mirena removed on June 1, 2009 so I am 3 weeks post mirena.  I had it in for 18 months and had it taken out because my husband and I want to try for baby #2.  I have read so man horror stories about women not being able to conceive after the mirena that I am terrified.  I had no period the last 6 months I had the mirena, and at the time, I thought it was a blessing. Now I am beginning to think that was not so good.  I am wondering when I will ever get my period so that we can accurately try baby #2.  Whenever I conceive, I know I will not go back to the mirena... I was on the pill for 6 years and stopped taking it, pregnant 1 month later with my son... that will not be the case with this mirena... never again... I will just go back to the pill

I am in the same boat.  I was on the pill for over 10 years and got preganant the first month after taking it with my first child.  We are trying to conceive our 2nd and since I had my Mirena removed in April 2008, we have had no luck!  I am 36 and don't want to wait too long.  Somehow, I think the Mirena has made me infertile.

I had the mirena iud in for about 15 months after my daughter was born and while it was in, it rocked... I am sure I will get it again after I finally get my #2, but after having it removed in Aug 07 I cramped and bled 3 days later for about 5 days. After that, I did not get a period... I was hoping that I had been lucky enough to get pregnant the first month, but that wasn't the case. I had a Dr appt in Oct for my normal pap, and had a pg test, which was neg. She put me on progesterone to get my cycle back, 10mg for 10 days, if I remember it right. I got a period after that, but OMG it hurt and I bled like a sieve for a week. I have had normal periods now in Dec 07 and Jan 08, so I am hoping that the progesterone did the trick. I still dont know if I am actually ovulating though since I have been keeping track on a calendar and checking cervical mucus to no avail... we'll see. I am sure it will happen, just might be a little longer than I had hoped.
