Problems with bleeding after contraceptive injection

hi. i got the contraceptive injection 3 months ago... and i wish i never. I'm 14 and got the injection as it's easier than having a regular method. for the first month everything was great, but since then i've had bleeding none-stop apart from a few days, which is really depressing as the whole reason was to have more sex, not less! is there anything i could do to stop the bleeding? i've heard going on the pill alongside the injection stops it, but then i might aswel rely solely on the pill. As it is i am probably not going to get another injection, as I really can cope with all the stress of the extra bleeding. your help would be appreciated! thanks

I got the injection in June 2010 and have bled everyday since. I've also put on about a stone in weight. I am now very self concious and upset about it. I'm incredibly worried, but so thankfull I looked it up as this has put my mind at rest. Is there a particular way you have to come off it, or can you just not get any more? I've only had it once but would never ever have it again. Thanks.

depo is a pain. I wish they would stop giving it to patients. It's suppose to shut down your system but the bleeding it causes is a reaction to the progesterone.

I've just had my 5th injection but the nurse gave me it in my lower back instead of my buttock, I've been having very very little spotting. After my 4th I didn't experience any spotting an was fine until my 5th one, Is there a possibility that it's stopped working because it wasn't in my buttock?

I had my first depo injection last month, and I started having spotting last week, and am now bleeding for a couple of days at a time - nothing heavy, but still annoying. I'm not sure if I should carry on and get my second injection next month or not? Any advice would be appreciated

I know that taking birth control pill everyday can be a pain, but in the long run I believe its alot better as I had 5 of these injections and I regret ever having them, I was 16 when I had my first one and at 20 years old now I am still waiting for my periods to return as I am trying to conceive! I would advise you to go to your Dr and see what he can advise you to do. Good luck!

hi, in answer to your question, i did stop after my 4th shot but only for 3 weeks i thought its conquered it but then i started bleeding again, its not so bad now, it just comes and goes however im going back to my doctors next week as ive spent nearly a year bledding on and off and this has caused me to split with my boyfriend. that doesnt bother me i guess because if he really liked me he would have been suportive, i really want to try the pill but im scared of the amount of weight ill put on.
i wouldnt reccoment keeping u with the injection but maybe ask the doctor to so a cervical examintaion and take some swabs as it can be caused by something else.

Hi, i'm new to this and just googled 'Bleeding after the injection' my first 3 months on the injection were fine (i got put on the injection because i kept getting bleeding when i was on the pill when i wasnt meant to, likewise when i stopped contraception all together, my doctor said the injection should solve my problem, ive had all the test imagineable and no-one knows what is wrong with me) and then i got my second one and have been bleeding ever since, it isnt bad bleeding and rarely need a tampon in but its still depressing and annoying. My doctor gave me other pills to take everyday aswell and that worked for aweek but its back to constant spotting if you would call it that. I just want to ask loli91 if her bleeding it stop and if so how long did it take?
Thanks

oh, don't you get the shot every three months? so after four shots it should stop bleeding?! doesn't that mean you'll have been bleeding for a year?!?! that seems like an awefully long time to me! thing of the money you'd save on pads if you just switched to the pill. also, you can skip a period with certain pills so if you want to go swimming you still can. i wouldn't suggest doing that too often, but one month wont hurt if its really important. plus, shorter periods, less acne and weaker cramps aren't bad either. : )

hi!
depo was the first form of birth control i was ever one, i had several shots and i didn't experience bleeding until i stopped. i never actually had a period during the shots. but as soon as i stopped the shots i bled for like two months straight. it was horrible, it was messy and it really made me self conscious. i was very very happy to be off of it because your body isn't suppose to bleed like that.  i would definitely suggest switching to the pill. i suggest that to anyone who takes depo!  i totally suggest the pill. they are small enough that you can just swallow it without water too so you can take it anywhere. i always took it before bed (11). some people complained about headaches and cramps. but if you take it at night you shouldn't feel that. also, if you think you will have issues with that there are weekly patches you can try. i haven't tried those, so ask your doctor what he or she thinks. also, the nuva ring. i think its called. are sounding interesting. its a ring you insert into your vagina monthly. you can't feel and neither can your partner.  it was just on the sunday night sex show (rerun but nevertheless interesting)  i really love sue, she's awesome and you can learn a lot from her! i watched that show since i was 14, at least, maybe sooner. but i feel that it really helped me with a lot of my questions about sex. anyway, you can ask your doctor about that too. i waited until i was 18 to have sex, personal choice. but i do understand the urges you get, even at your age. i think the big thing is to be smart about it and to wear a condom!!! that is numero uno in lovers lane!!! no matter how much your boyfriend says its okay, its not! and i am glad you are on the pill but it doesn't hurt to double up! AIDS and HIV are not kidders and they will try knocking on your door. remember, just because you are smart and got birth control. doesn't mean he is and hasn't been fooling around on you. dont forget, for every person you sleep with, you are sleeping with ALL the people they have been with too (girls and boys alike)
so dont let your partners tell you its enough protection with the birth control. they just dont want to wear the condom and its not right! and its not safe!!  if you are concerned, go pick some up that are 'for her' pleasure and tell them you perfer it and that its got nice lube on it for you and that it will enhance things. if they refuse to wear the condom and be safe, then there is only once choice, walk away!! if he wont be safe its not worth the risk and he obviously doesn't care about you and your needs and safety.
also. i hope you are letting your parents know about your activities. and i hope they are the ones taking you to the doctor to get these prescriptions.  they love you and want nothing for the best for you i am sure. so share, be honest and open. if you are ready to talk sex and be responsible as you have been, then it is your responsibility to be honest and open with your parents, if you feel like you are ready to be an adult, then talk to your parents like an adult.
be smart and double up!

My second shot of Depo caused me to bleed almost 3 straight months...I would bleed for 3 or 4 days then it would stop for 1 or 2 days and start all over.  I agree with the above posters...BC dose not protect from STD's so you need to use a condom as well as BC.  If you cant deal with the bleeding then how are you going to deal with a baby?  Dont be in a hurry to grow up...enjoy your life...not just sex...thats not what life is all about.

Who is taking you to the doctor to get the depo?  If it is your mom you should talk to her about your symptoms.  You are awfully young to be having sex but things are what they are.  If you are still going to be having sex often and you don't want this bleeding you probably do need to be on some other effective method such as the pill.  But even with the pill you must also use condoms to protect against stds which are very common in the teen population.
You must also be 18 to post on this site but I understnad why you did.

I agree with the other poster. You are awfully young to be worried about sex. But since it is clear that you have already made that choice, I think it is very smart that you are on BirthControl...never rely on a condom alone. If you are going to be having sex, then you need to be on Birthcontrol and using a condom.VERY IMPORTANT!! I have had the Depo shot before, and it messed me up pretty bad... If you no longer want to get the injectable birth control, then you can always get on the pill...However, in order for the pill to work accurately, you have to remember to take it every day, at the same time everyday. If you are not ready for that responsability(I'm 22 and I never remembered)then you need to stick with what you have. Good luck hun. Please don't be in a hurry to grow up..cause one day that rush will catch up with you, and you might miss your younger carefree days. STD's happen everday and so do unplanned pregnancies...I know everyone says ,"It won't happen to me."...But that's what everyone of those people thought as well. Please be careful, you are still just a little girl-no offense intended.

You may not want to hear my opinion...but at age 14 why are you worried about having more sex?  If you have a steady boyfriend and feel the need to be having sex already, I would think a condom would suffice, I'm sure it's not like you're available to have sex THAT much!?  Don't be so eager to rush this part of your life along!  Besides pregnancy, also bear in mind STD's, which would be worse to deal with than this bleeding!  Take care and be sensible, please, for your own self!
