Recurrent BV infections and TTC

by Meganlee, Jul 31, 2006 12:00AM
Hello, I have been tested for BV by my doctor and every culture comes back negative, but I have the symptoms of the tingly feeling on the outside of the vagina and sometimes I will get an onion type odor.  So, my doctor just goes with the diagnosis of BV and sends me home with a script for MetroGel.  This all started when my husband and I started trying to conceive a second child. I know the sperm can throw off the vaginal pH but this is just getting annoying.  I am currently on my 3rd round of MetroGel, because after I use the 5 day course the symptoms seem to come back within weeks.  I guess my question is does this sound like bacterial vaginosis and if so how do I get rid of it for good so I can start TTC #2.  The doctor did find a cyst on my right ovary and I am not sure if this could be a cause too?  It even seems like my doctor is unsure of how to treat me at this point and I refuse to do another round of MetroGel if this last round does not clear up the symptoms. Thanks so much for the advice in advance!

Isn't MetroGel a cream for eczema/rosacia?  Why not antibiotics?

MetroGel-Vaginal  Treatment of susceptible anaerobic bacterial and protozoal infections in the following conditions: Amebiasis, symptomatic and asymptomatic trichomoniasis; skin and skin structure infections; CNS infections; intra-abdominal infections (as part of combination regimen); systemic anaerobic infections; treatment of antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis (AAPC),------bacterial vaginosis-------; as part of a multidrug regimen for H. pylori eradication to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence

MetroGel-Vaginal is an antibiotic, it is Flagyl.

quick question:  Did you husband get treated as well?  If not then he could have it also.  It shows no symptoms on the male, therefore the two of you could be spreading it back & fourth.

When I had BV I was given a pill for both me and my partner at the time.  My partner had to be treated so that we didn't keep transferring it back and forth.  My friend had vaginitis and was give metrogel.  You might want to try another medication.

No my husband has not been treated and my doctor tells me that that is not true, but I seem to think it would be.  Just like a yeast infection, you could keep spreading it back and fourth.  Has anyone ever heard of using Boric Acid?  I read this somewhere and was wondering.  I will talk to my doctor about treating my husband as well. I didn't realize how popular bacterial vaginosis was until I started doing research and it is right up there with yeast infections.

I have taken boric acid capsules for yeast infections before.  It just makes the vagina more acidic and yeast can't thrive in acidic environments.   I don't know if that would work for bv though.  I have always taken flagyl for BV.  Maybe your ph is off though and the boric acid capsules will work.  I just took them at night for 14 days and worked for my yeast infections.

i am not sure if TTC#2 has been successful by now. But if this issue is still recurrent, you might want to try rephresh gel. you're right that having sex can throw off the ph level and girl522 is right in saying that a more acidic ph level down there will help deter bacterial or yeast growth. the gel will make sure you have the right ph level. its OTC and can be bought online :)
