Well everyone is different, but I wouldn't recomend it to my worst enemy. I hated it. It made me very moody, anxious, I gained 15 lbs and could not loose it no matter what I did, I did have periods but very irregular and light. Maybe you should consider the patch. My friends, who is very sensitive, reacted very well to that.

So, sorry to pry, but are you gonna tell your fiance that you really want kids soon?

Best of luck

I was on the shot twice, the first time I was on it for 3.5 years and loved it. I didn't gain weight, wasn't moody, didn't have a period and things were perfetc with it. The second time I was on it, I had just given birth and was nursing. It killed my sex drive and made me a little grouchy. Both times I was able to conceive within 12 months of getting off of it.

One way to test out the effects would be to try the mini-pill first, that way if you have unpleasant side effects, the med will work out of your system sooner. But, if you do not trust yourself to take them faithfully and on time, perhaps you should look into getting an IUD.

Im sorry you thought the remarks were rude ( havent looked again so maybe some after were) if I seemed rude sorry. I just think its better to be honest and both be happy together wouldnt u think? Maybe before making any decisions talk about it? You never know maybe hes expecting you to even? And whats the worst he could say? Not now? Maybe he may say hes not ready but maybe in a few months etc so then u know its not too long, and maybe just stay on what ur on? Im guessing u both love each other which is maybe why u found the comments rude, which means Im sure ul both work something out.

All the best#

(p.s. from what Ive read on injections its put me off and I wouldnt personally recomend it)

I applaud your change of heart.

I've heard some bad things about Depo, and a few good things.  I personally would never do it.  Maybe look into something less permanent and long-lasting, such as the Patch or Ring or an IUD.

I was on the shot for about 4 years and loved it.But i did gain weight, that was the only side effect i had, i did not have periods while i was on it, i got one every now and then, and it was very light(more like spotting) for 2 days!!

I didnt start TTC for well over a year, and had no problems when we did.

I'm glad you changed your mind, you will feel much better about yourself in the long run!!!

I went back and read the rest of the post and I see what u mean. I agree its not right to accidently on purpose not take the pill but I think maybe people were just trying to warn you about it. None of us really know each other personally, so people only go on what u write, I dont think its a deliberate personal attack, as u can see from the responses ur getting now. Some people are just very passionate in what they believe, and u asked our opinions and people will give it. Sometimes it takes a strong opinion to help you make the decision u need (am I making much sence lol)

All Im trying to say is I believe most women on here have the best of intentions, and their strong beliefs make them the wonderful people they are.

Take care all

Don't know which depo you're talking about, but I was on depo-lupron for 3 mos.  i had mood swings and HOT FLASHES!!! but was fairly bearable.  long term usage can cause weight gain and other unpleasant side effects including loss of bone density.  your choice to use or not use depo might be influenced by the amount of time you would be using the medication and how many side effects you are willing to accept.

by jekasica, Aug 01, 2006 12:00AM
I just dont want to gain weight so.... that is the only thing im worried about im not worried about any other side effects or anyting so....

by AndiJ78, Aug 01, 2006 12:00AM
Gaining weight isn't inevitable and you can certainly take steps to avoid the weight gain such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle and exercising regularly.

Again, it is a personal decision, what has happened for any one of us may not hold true for you.

Good luck!

I DO NOT like the shot or recommend it! I had it after my son and it was great, no period no nothing. Then I got off of it and had another baby then went back on it and it was horrible I gained 35lbs in 3 months, and the mood swings for the first couple of weeks were unbearable! I wasa total mess! I so wouldn't tell anyone to get it. And you can try and lose weight but its very hard, im still trying. Im pregnant now but before i got pregnant i tried and couldnt and after i have the baby im hoping i will be able to lose the weight from it. They make it sound good, but I wouldn't trust it!

by cugirl, Aug 01, 2006 12:00AM
I wouldnt recommend it for anyone and I only had 2 shots.  I gained 50lbs in one month while eating healthy and exercising.  I had horrible mood swings, bleed almost constantley after the 2nd shot. I would definately do some research before considering to use it, especially on calcium and bones.  I know alot of women who have stopped it and have not been able to conceive years after.

by dandeelyon, Aug 02, 2006 12:00AM
Andi, I realize you are irritated with her but the shot is absolutely horrible.  I believe that weight gain and mood swings is absolutely inevetible on it.  Five of my friends, including me, went on it and we all put on weight and had horrible experience.  One of my friends bled for three months. When I was on it, I put on 40 pounds in two months, had hot flashes and was crankier then I normally am.  I exercised daily and not just a walk around the block.  I was doing cardio and weight training.  It was devestating.  I personally think it should be pulled from the market.  In my opinion, there are definately better options out there (patch, iud, etc).

by AndiJ78, Aug 02, 2006 12:00AM
And my experience was the opposite, all but one of my dozen or so friends had no period, no weight gain, no mood issues. The only one who had any neg side effects was spotting during the first three months and eventually the spotting went away.

I was on it for 3.5 years and I didn't gain a pound, I was very active, ate well, and felt great all the way around. I think it is great for people to share their experiences, but you also need to realize that not everyone has that same experience. Did you bother to read that i suggested she try the mini-pill first to see how she tolerated it? Of course not, you just wanted a chance to jump on the "anti-depo" bandwagon. Not everyone feels the same way about it, I am telling it from another perspective, MY experience.

Get over yourself.  If people don't agree with you, you get all jumpy and nasty.  You are not the only person allowed to be direct.   Fine, that's your personality.  Good for you.  I'm glad it workded for you and yes I did see the suggestion on the mini pill.  You are absolutely right, I am on the anti-depo bandwagon and will continue to tell people how crappy it really is.  Yes it is my experience, and clearly the experience of many other women.  She wanted opinions, not just yours.

I am puzzled, because I am one who didn't have a bad experience, I am being nasty? You are the one who directed a somewhat bitter comment towards me in the first place. I didn't say anyone had to agree with me, but there does need to be both sides shown here for her to make an informed decision. What happened to any one of us does not have any bearing on what she may experience. I think it can be risky to shy someone away from something that may be quite beneficial for her based on a few peoples reactions to the shot.

Women have been using the shot across the globe for many years and for every bad story, there is just as many good. Who knows, she may love the shot, it may work well for her. Why is it a bad thing to encourage her to try something?

I am not the one who needs to "get over myself" perhaps you should take a look at yourself before pointing fingers at others.

I was on the depo shot for 6 months.  i hated it and would also not recommend it to my worst enemy.  I had mood swings bled for the entire 6 months and gained 50 lbs.  i am very active and was the entire time.  i am a daily runner and do martial arts, but even that didnt stop my weight gain.  I suffered from sever headaches and blurred vision.  Dont do it, you will regret it.

what i dont get is that you were trying to get pregnant and now you dont want to gain weight? what do you think happens when you have a baby? you gain weight.

by happyflower, Aug 02, 2006 12:00AM
I was on the shot for 1 year. I haven't had one in 7 months, I had normal regular periods the entire time I was getting the shots... and BAM! 7 months after I should have had a period, and not getting any shots, I haven't had a single period. No spotting either. I gained only 5 pounds, no big deal.

I'm having some odd symptoms that I'm seeing a doctor for that may be a result of the shot. It could just be a coincidence that these problems started when I started/stopped getting the shot. I'm 18 and my mother (who is going through menopause) and I have hot flashes together. I've been bloated like I'm going to get a period for about 4-5 months now. Sometimes when light pressure is applied over my ovaries it feels like someone is holding a lighter to my uterus or something. I also get acne on my back, which is a big deal to me because I always had such great skin (not meaning to toot my own horn or anything). Pretty uncomfortable at times. I'm sure the doctor will figure out what's up soon.

I know lots of people who have had the shot, and I'm the only one who has had problems. I would personally advise you against getting it, but if you think it's the right thing for you and you don't plan on having children in the near future, go for it. Alot of people love it, a handful of people hate it. Good luck!

Not a one person of the 549 women I know liked the shot either!!

Let's face it, there isn't one form of birth control that doesn't raise the risk of this or that, or doesn't make you moody or put on weight...they are what they are, and you need to try a couple out and make sure they are for you. Manipulating your body with chemicals will usually lead to some sort of side effect. No amount of living healthy will counter the chemicals 100%.

The patch worked well for me, and the pill has worked well for me. I never thought something that stopped my period completely (depo) would be a good idea. Just seems like you are messing with nauter too much. And then to try and conceive once you are off of it...I have heard too many horror stories, but people generally only talk about the bad, and that is what others remember best.

My friend also had the same problem, along with lumps in her brests.
Never take this poison.
