Should I be worried?

by LisaRB, Feb 20, 2007 12:00AM
Over the last two weeks I have been experiencing serious headaches.  I originally thought that it might be dehydration but drinking water didn’t help much.  Last night I felt quite dizzy, that progressively felt worse. I still had my headache and started to get “pins and needles” from roughly my belt line to the top of my head on the right hand side.  After roughly 15 minutes the pins and needles changed to numbness in the mentioned area.  The continued for about 2/3 hours during this time it was difficult to talk (slurrying and loss of concentration).  The headache is predominantly near my left temple. I am 27 years and in fairly good health (normal PB, no previous illnesses, no history of ilness in my family).  I did my annual check-up in September and nothing seemed to be wrong.

Lisa,  what you're describing sounds like a transcient ischemic attack (TIA,  or mini-stroke) to me.

I think you should probably call your doc and get checked out.  These can be prevented with blood thinners in the future,  or maybe it's not that at all but an unusual migraine.

In any case,  this sounds serious enough to warrant medical help.

Best wishes.  I hope you post back with how you are doing.

As a lifetime sufferer of migraines, you could be experiencing one. The one I have right now has been going on a week and a half and was so bad in the beginning I thought I was having an aneurysm.

I agree that you need to get it checked out, just to rule out serious things, but the one-sidedness of it makes me think migraine. Migraines can present with a variety of frightening symptoms. Definitely get it checked out tho as soon as possible because it could be something more serious.

I have had similar (not exactly the same) symptoms, and my doc said it was probably asymtamatic migranes. (sometimes I would get the headache, sometimes I wouldn't). My face would get numb, and my hand - then I had trouble concentrating - slurred speech, etc. Good luck, I hope it's nothing.

Slurring words and loss of concentration is not a good thing. Those symptoms and the intense headaches can be a sign of stroke...especialy if this is a new thing for you. Please contact your dr immediately and describe to them what you posted here. Insist that they take you seriously (as I am sure they will) and be seen asap.

This is not something you should avoid taking care of as soon as possible. Good luck and update us when you can.

While this could also be a migraine, it is so important that you check to make sure. This is your health and you don't want to jeopardize it.

I don't mean to scare you, but I have seen these symptoms in a friend of mine and watched her have a stroke. She didn't really think anything was happening, but the slurring speech scared us enough to get her to the hospital. It is not something I would want anyone else to go through if it can be stopped. She took months to recover, but I think the only reason she did was because we caught it just as it was starting.

Take care.
