Sour Tasting Vaginal Discharge

I noticed that I have sour-tasting vaginal discharge.  I noticed it one day while my boyfriend and I were having sex, I went down on him and I almost gagged because my discharge on him was so sour tasting ... it really took me by surprise.

I never had this problem before, and my discharge never tasted sour before except for these last couple of months.  There is no smell to it at all, the discharge is pearly white, not clumpy, and I have no redness/itching nor any other symptoms ... it's just the taste.  I am not taking any medications or birth control, I have been tested for STD's which all came out negative, PAP smear negative as well.

Does anyone know why this is happening (seriously, this has taken a large toll on my sexual relationship - I don't enjoy it because I am constantly worried about it and I am getting depressed over this).  Does anyone have any remedies to get rid of the taste?  I have done quite a bit of research and I haven't found much help/explanations.  Please help, I am desperate.  Thanks.

It depends where you are in your cycle. When you're ovulation, your secretions are clear and sweeter. After menstration, you secretions are thick, white and sour tasting. Vaginas are acidic by nature. Ejaculate is on the other side of the scale, a base (the opposite of an acid) henceforth the bleach smell and bitter taste.

Ladies, I have the same problem and I always put flavored lube in my vagina before seeing my man( because I was also conscious of my taste) now he thinks I taste like candy LOL anyways , mine started after getting back on birth control but I noticed when I took an anti bacterial drug for acne it went away, but I’m off the drugs and it’s back.... my theory is my vagina is just at a high PH from the bacteria and I need to somehow figure out a way to get it balanced again.... I also notice it’s worse right before my period.. So Many Factors !! Ugh

Hmmm, that is an interesting theory!!  You do wonder if inflammation is involved in this.

This worked for me. Use a monistat ovule. Two or three days later use a vinegar and water douche. Then fill it with water and douche again to rinse it out. You should be good to go for later that night.

Hi everyone. I came to this thread bc I was very worried about my discharge. At the time I was on the birth control Sprintec and was consistently having very watery bitter tasting discharge. I tried going off of the pill and it seemed to work, at least in terms of improving texture (back to mucousy type texture for the most part) and mellowing out the taste. However, it’s important to remember that your vagina SHOULD taste slightly bitter or astringent due to the natural PH of a healthy vagina! Anyone who expects a vagina to taste like “nothing” is crazy. You wouldn’t expect a penis to taste like “nothing” or taste sweet. As long as you are not in pain, or have irritating discharge, you don’t have to worry. hopefully this can ease some stress, I think for many of you, this is a problem created out of an unrealistic expectation of flavor and not out of any real issue!

Firstly, stop douching or putting things inside your vagina. It is a self clezning area and if you start messing with it, you can change the ph inside and create major problems. Secondly, chaange your diet to include more fresh fruit and veggies. Drink more water. Stop with fast food and crap. Give it a few weeks. If no better, go see dr. Hope this helps. Use condom if you don't want pregnancy. ☺

The taste of personal fluids can change depending upon many factors. Diet changes, eating certain foods, hormone changes, stress, lack of sleep, illness, etc.

This is NOT normal no matter what these people keep saying.
It happened to me too. I’ve been to 4 different gynecologists. Literally been tested for everything. They can’t come up with a reason.
I’ve been put on a very strict diet, tried every kind of prescription and over the counter medicine and remedy. Tried at least 10 different home remedies. Nothing helps. No one seems to know anything about why this happens to a handful of women.
I have stopped having sex. With anyone. Stopped dating. I guess that part of my life is over now. It’s too embrassijg.

It's definitely natural and any man or woman that can't handle the taste should be embarassed at what a ***** THEY are
This is definitely NOT normal. I’ve never a problem with this until 3 years ago. Same issue....all negative results. No odor BUT my vagina couldn’t go a full 12 hours without smelling “smell”. Just last week, I tried Queen V boric acid and it completely got rid of the discharge and sour/bitter taste. I’ve had this problem for three years and finally back to normal!
It is normal.   Your own bodily factors is what changes the taste smell to an extent.  Obviously if you have an STI or STD it is going to cause a difference.  As for me I only have the sour ,ascidity  taste and smell  Only when my hormones have changed.  This usually only occurs when I am pregnant.  It has occurred once or twice before without being pregnant and it  Was when I had a dramatic weight change which will cause your hormones to change as well.

It is due to acidity. Vaginas can have a sour taste at times and even sometimes metallic due to their high acidity.

HI, WHAT MEDICATION HELPED  YOU?
Hi there. It helps to start your own thread as you will then get direct help.  If you have yeast overgrowth, Diflucan is a tablet a doctor can prescribe or you can use something like monostat ovules which you buy over the counter at a drug store and insert into your vagina.  Those usually take care of vaginal candida overgrowth.

Perfectly normal as long as there is no smell or itch or rash!! Just eat and drink things that contain natural nutrients and sugars, waters etc... it's like the mans protein or a Childs breast milk what you eat is what will mix and come out of your body!

Earlier this year, I noticed my vaginal discharge was awfully bitter. Like, REALLY bitter. I tried almost everything for it, I never had an odor, itch or anything. Just the bitter taste. My boyfriend at the time noticed it and gently let me know. I tasted it for myself. Not pleasant. About 1 week ago I tried Vitamin C with rosehip 1000mg, I started by inserting 1 every night for 2 nights vaginally. Since the pills are bitter also, it was hard to tell if it was my discharge or the pills dissolving. So I just started taking them orally which, after about 5 days has *improved* the taste. Now, I am tasting better but there is still a hint of bitterness left. This could work for you. Try it.
Also, only insert pills vaginally at night when you're about to go lay down, if it starts dissolving and drains down, it will burn A LOT. and may cause swelling.
Hope things get better. this is very embarrassing and frustrating for many.

Yes it will,I swear by it and if you taste really bitter put a 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in some water (at least 8 oz) and drink it. You can also douche with baking soda and water but make sure you eat plenty of yogurt to keep your vaginal ph. I used to not drink a lot of water and only drink diet soda MAN, let me tell you I tasted horrible!!! Now I taste good. I don't mind going down at all. Eating a lot of onions makes you taste really good to believe or not!!! Don't douche more than twice a month and don't add scents, oils, or other crap!!! People can get infections from douching especially if the don't eat yogurt or enough yogurt!!!

I had this same problem. I used to drink soft drinks all the time, but the last time I got a uti I drank nothing but water and my discharge went from sour to an almost buttery, somewhat sweet taste. I still drink nothing but water, but when I get a headache I'll drink something to get caffeine and my discharge will get sour again, so there's definitely a connection there.  Your diet in general plays a big part in how your body tastes, judging by my experience and what I've read online, but water should definitely help you out.

For a few months I had a sour vaginal taste. I went to the GYN and all tests came back clean...but this ish really bothered me. So, I thought about what I wasn't doing and I realized I wasn't drinking enough if any water...I started drinking 2-3 cups of water per day/cut out the juice and now the taste is back to normal...

Doesn't hurt to try but if you haven't done it already try drinking plenty of water..It worked for me and I know how frustrating this issue could be!

Women do not need to taste their discharge to understand something isn't right.  Again, everyone's ph is different and what is abnormal for one woman might not be for another who is healthy.  Really an unreliable way to discover what is going on.

Douching is never ever recommended for women.  This in itself distorts proper ph and is unhealthy.  Doctors always advise against this and want posters to have proper information on that.  Don't douche.

good luck

Thank you so much, IT WORKED! I had taken antibiotics for a post surgical infection and in spite of taking probiotics, kefir, douching (even with vinegar, as was suggested elsewhere), not only did my discharge continue to be whitish and VERY SOUR but then I developed a painful RASH and even open lesions. I had already been tested for every STD imaginable and all were negative, so I knew my pH balance was off due to the meds.

I used a backing soda douche and even applied baking soda externally for as long as I could stand the burning - about 2 hours. Then after rinsing it off I tried another remedy I had read about; applied cold pressed coconut oil internally and eternally... SWEET! Within 6 hours my rash had almost completely cleared up. Within less than 24 hours I am totally healed, no redness, no open lesions and is my man going to get a tropical treat tonight! COCONUT OIL is a miracle cure all! Some of it's beneficial properties are preventing/curing Alzheimer, a natural antibacterial, anti fungal and antiviral (they say it can kill herpes virus). BONUS... it is the best SKIN SOFTENER and LUBRICANT I have ever tried.

This website was not easy to find, so I hope other women suffering from SOUR TASTING VAGINAL DISCHARGE find there way here.
