Spotting for 6 weeks and lower back pain

I have been having light spotting for 6 weeks. I went to my regular doctor who did a pregnancy test (which was negative) and then referred me to an OB-GYN. The OB-GYN doctor did a pelvic exam, but didn't find anything that would be causing the spotting. She said just to wait and see if it stops on its own. Now I've been having aching lower back pain. It is difficult to bend over and move in certain positions. I don't remember doing anything that would have strained my back. I would appreciate any helpful and informational comments on what this might be. Thanks.
