Sudden Weight Gain but Not Pregnant

I'll be 46 at the end of this month & just moved to a new state so I don't have the luxury of knowing any doctors.  In the last 1-2 months I suddenly gained 40 + lbs & look pregnant.   That seems to be where the weight all is.  A urinalysis proved negative for pregnancy on Monday & with my 3 grown kids I did not gain this much weight &/or so fast.  I just look pregnant & feel "full - heavy - tired & short of breath" most of the time.  Tomorrow I go for a Pelvic ultrasound w/a full bladder.  The day after I am scheduled for an Abdomen ultrasound - w/fasting.  Any idea what we are looking for or what could cause this?  I can barely eat because I feel so full & yet it's lately that I've gained the most weight.  I am not in pain, I just feel miserable - like over due.  When I asked at the doctor's office what could cause this & what we are looking for they said 'a cyst, tumor, or cancer'...... I would kind of like a bit more information if at all possible.  In the last week I gained another 10lbs & I know this can not be good or keep on.

Thanks,
JoeShell

Hey everyone, you should ask your prospective medical professionals to test you for a disorder called polycystic ovarian syndrome, or pcos. It causes weight gain, hair loss, bp issues, acne, and if not treated can lead to infertility. Your body's estrogen decreases, progesterone and testosterone increase and you can get cysts on your ovaries some which may need to be treated or removed through surgery. Best wishes, I am in the same situation but also have sle lupus, type 1 diabetes, hypothyroidism caused by hashimoto's thyroiditis, arthritis and stomach issues. I am normally thin and have a very hard time maintaining my weight due to stomach issues but since my 41st bday in january, I started in with new symptoms weight gain of 48 lbs in only 3 weeks. I am a former med student n remember studying an article in the new england journal of medicine on pcos and we are currently running a blood lab and have an ultrasound in the morning to confirm. This can be treated so don't be afraid to ask ;) xx

I have exactly the same problems as you and everyone else here and it's making me so depressed. I've always eaten very healthy and exercised so there has to be a reason for this massive continous weight gain. I've had so many tests: thyroid, cortisol, sugar, ultrasounds, tests for ovarian cancer, tests for heart failure (congestive heart disease can cause weight gain in stomach along with ankle swelling etc) But all tests have come back normal. Doctors are fed up of me and think that I'm some sort of hypochondriac. Anyway, I'm now researching LEAKY GUT SYNDROME. Please check it out because many of the symptoms match those that many of us on here are experiencing. There's loads of sites about this and they all have specific diet & supplement regimes to follow. I'm going to give it a try! By the way, as you have probably already guessed, it says that this is NOT a disease that is widly recognised by western doctors - surprise surprise....

Hello,
I too have MANY of the same problems that you all have posted about. Most distressing and shocking is my weight gain. I have gained about 15 pounds since March its now end of June. I started vigorously exercising in April along with eating VERY healthy. Instead of losing, I gained 10 more pounds! I have been Gluten and Dairy free for almost 3 years now. I try to eat Paleo as much as possible. Pretty much the only grain I eat is rice, some quinoa and very little of that.

I gained a lot with my pregnancies and had lost 55 pounds, only to gain 20 of that back. Last fall I had and endo/colonoscopy as I was very sick. I had ulcers in my stomach.
I suffer from intense anxiety/panic attacks and no medicine has helped. Some depression, really bad fatigue and irritability. PMS gets worse and worse I am like a crazy person! I have had internal and external ultrasounds and ovaries and uterus seem fine. I had the Mirena for a year and a half and had it taken out. I did feel somewhat better, now really bad again.
I had most symptoms of low thyroid, tests came back normal.
I have many symptoms of Cushings, and sounds like a lot of you guys do as well. I have a referral in to an endocrinologist so I will see what they say.
CANDIDA!!! Go research it. Yeast can wreak havoc with our systems and medical doctors do not really help with this. http://www.candidafree.net/index.htm  here is an awesome website about that.

Also when you do the thyroid tests, make sure they do the entire panel NOT just TSH. Your T4 and T3 levels can be off even if your TSH is not.
I also am going to see a Naturopathic doctor. I have used natural alternatives in the past along with Medical docs.

I feel so disgusting!! More than half my closet no longer fits, and weight gain primarily in my stomach, love handles, butt and thighs. So depressing. I hope you all figure out what your problems are. Please post back if you do!

I am 21 years old. 5'4" Active duty Marine. I have broad shoulders and this built physique. One look at me and you think "she'll break me in half". Yet I have this same exact issue. I have to walk around every single day sucking my belly in. I workout like a madwoman. We train constantly. I follow the Paleo-diet like religion. And yet I have never been able to get rid of my stomach. I've had since I was a kid, even after puberty. Except now it's about 5 times the size and when you poke it...it's like you're poking a basketball because it's so hard. Everytime I do full body workout (and I like to completely slay myself on these) my whole entire body would be completely sore including my abs. I am now 187 pounds. At first glance you would think that I'm this female gym rat because I'm so built but little does anyone know I have a 15-week pregnant belly that I have to suck in every single day (and it hurts like hell when I relax). My career can end if anyone finds out about this and I am deathly afraid to go see our Navy doctor.

LIke everyone else I have gained weight too fast. I weighted around 140 last week and no I am 164. Yeah I know Depressing. I went to the emergency room the last time this happened (May 2012) They tested me and just gave me some pills to get rid of water weight. Yeah right, that didn't work.
Question: Has anyone fasted recently? Maybe before the weight gain?
