The Pill and Cholesterol

I started LoEstrin (JunelFe 1/20) last month to help regulate my periods, control acne and hormone fluctuations, and for birth control. Just before I started the pills I was diagnosed with high cholesterol (254 total; HDL 49, LDL 188, Triglycerides 86) and have since read that The Pill causes your cholesterol to rise. I am on a lowfat diet and exercise weight loss program and do not smoke. I am taking garlic supplements to try to help lower my count also. However, I am 37 and there is a history of heart disease in my family (though not in the women). Is it safe to take LoEstrin? Should I be doing anything additionally, such as taking a baby aspirin to help prevent blood clots? I know that LoEstrin is used on menaupausal women as hormone therapy, and that it is extremely low-dose. So far I have had very few side effects with this pill, and it has helped with all of the things it was supposed to help, so I would like to keep taking it. Any medical information or personal anecdotes about LoEstrin or JunelFe would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I too am a 37 y/o woman who has been diagnosed with high cholesterol. I was put on Lipitor for this problem.  My OB/GYN would not put me on birth control pills due to this problem, although I had taken them for 8 years with no ill side effects.  Instead I have had the Merina IUD inserted a week ago and am having problems with cramping.  I don't know which is worse, the cramps I am experiencing from Merina (which my doctor said will subside) or the worrying that I am doing about side effects from the IUD.  I would rather go back on the pill, and hearing your story makes me wonder why my gynecologist is so against putting me back on them.
