Tricyclen and worried about pregnancy - Pls pls help me

by Teresainpain, Sep 12, 2006 12:00AM
I am on Tricyclen.  I was due to have my period the week of September 3rd - September 9th.  However, I started to get my period the Monday before that week (August 28) and my period lasted approximately a week and a half, ending during the week that I was supposed to get it (probably around Tues, Sept 5).  I went to see my boyfriend this past week (On the 9th) and we had intercourse and after he finished he pulled out and the condom came off, leaving it inside me.  I'm worried that some of his sperm may have entered my vagina.  And even more so, I am worried that because my period was kind of off this past month that I may have gotten pregnant.  I continued to take the Tricyclen according to the original schedule even though my period was kind of wacky in terms of timing.  I took my first pill yesterday (Sunday Sept 10).  I won't be able to tell if I am pregnant or not until the end of this month when I am due for my next period so in the meantime, I'd like to hear your thoughts on what could happen.  Pls tell me everything iwll be ok.  How does birth control work?  when you are on your period and you are taking sugar pills, can you get pregnant then? or does the birth control cover that?

I think you should be safe as long as you hadn't missed any pills. The hormones remain in your system for a while even when you stop taking them if you are TTC.

The pill works by preventing ovulation, so you're protected equally all month long, even during the placebo week. No worries :-)

If the BCP prevents you from ovulating, then how do you have your period??? Don't you HAVE to ovulate to get your period??  My best friend DID get pregnant while on the pill. She took them for over a year EVERYDAY at the same time and she is having her baby girl ANY day now. It is possible to get pregnant while on the pill, I don't care what people say. I really hope you are not since you don't want to be. I just wanted you to know that it IS possible. My best friend is proof.

It is possible to get pregnant while on the pill but not likely. I'm sure your friend did take her pill every day at the same time but usually when a woman gets pregnant on the pill it is because it wasn't taken right or she took antibiotics, which decrease the effectiveness. When you are on the pill, it is just withdrawl bleeding. That is why when you take the pill continuously without taking the placebos, you don't have a "period." But you do not have an actual cyclic period.

Hey hey hey - don't try to freak people out! BCP are the most effective birth control method aside from abstinence. What is it - 98 or 99% effective? While there is a HIGHLY remote, remote possibility that if the stars aligned and the heavens opened up, you could get pregnant on the pill when taking it as directed, it's extremely rare.

I suspect your friend was not as good about taking her pills as she claims or she is a very rare exception.

There is no need to raise an alarm - that's wrong and unfair.

I agree. For something that is proven lab tested to be 98-99% effective I sure know a lot of people who accidentally get pregnant on the pill. I know that it is possible- and not always the fault of the woman- but most of the time it is due to not taking the pill as directed. I just have a hard time believing someone who says "I was on the pill, I don't know what happened!"

my sister in law got pg on the pill too but as the other ladies said she was taking a high dose of antibiotics when it happened.

I'm glad you all clarified that theresa doens't need to get freaked out over rae's comment!! my doctor told me the only time the pill doesnt do it's just is if you are on anti biotics, or you vomit, or have severe diareah.  I only know one girl who got pregnant on the pill, and she was also on penicillin at the time. they call those amoxo-babies. apparently there are a lot of 'em out there!!
you worries are normal girl. I understand where you are coming from, and I think we worry more so than usual when we really know that this is not a time in our lives to have a baby. I'm on the pill and my last period came a bit early as well. it is not a cause for concern

I agree with the above 2 posters about the birth control.  If you take it properly you have nothing to worry about.

by shygirl1981, Sep 12, 2006 12:00AM
after taking a whole pack of pills, you have built up enough hormones in your body to protect you during the placebo week.

by mrs canada, Sep 12, 2006 12:00AM
Remember that the sugar pills don't do anything as far as birth control goes - they are only there to keep you in the habit of taking a pill every day. (Some people, if they had a few days off from taking the bcp, would forget to start again at the next cycle) You should be just fine.

That's right. Actually, I am an "amoxo-baby"! lol! My mom was on the pill when she got pregnant with me. On the pill for five years, took antibiotics and bam! pregnant with me. But I agree that if you are taking the pill correctly there is nothing to worry about. Everybody has some story about somebody they know getting pregnant on the pill and like I said, I am very skeptical of a lot of those people. I have also had my period come a little bit early. I called my doctor and they said that happens sometimes especially on low-dose triphasil pills.

no. pills are not the most effective birth control next to abstinence.  IUD's both copper and hormonal, depo provera, nuvaring and implants are more effective than birth control pills

As some of the comments stated above, it's possible but kinda rare to get pregnant on the pill, I was on the pill for eight years, doctor prescribed some antibiotics, I took them, and of course didn't read up on them,  and BAMM I turned up pregnant.

Thanks Everyone for all of your comments (even the kind scary ones).  I appreciate all of your help.  He was wearing a condom at the time but when he pulled out it came off and stayed in me. So I suppose the chances of a sperm entering into me and IF it reached an egg to actually fertilize it when I'm on the pill are slim chances, but I guess I just needed to hear it from someone else.  Thanks all. I guess I just have to wait to the end of the month to find out what's up for sure.

you are protected against pregnancy after seven days of the first pack of pills. dont worry too much. tricyclen is actually quite a high dosage of pills, and you can rely on it 99.99 percent.  I am still a firm believer in the basal body thermometer as a means of reassuring yourself that you are NOT ovulating!! I have tempd for 5 months now and can time my period (af) down to the hour!!
