Uterine Fibroids. . .questions

by kellyyouse, Jun 06, 2007 12:00AM
I had my first GYN visit yesterday, and I'm 32 years old.  I know that's really bad, but at least I finally went.

The doctor said I had an enlarged uterus and wants me to get an ultrasound to look for uterine fibroids.  I was wondering a few things. . .why did she automatically assume fibroids?  Could it be anything else of concern?  Also, if my uterus is enlarged enough for her to have noticed, and it is from fibroids, does that mean that the fibroids could be big?

Thanks for any help!

My mom had a five pound fibroid. She probably felt it during her exam. I went for a pelvic ultrasound and a transvaginal ultrasound. My periods were long and heavy. the only thing it said was "endometrium slightly prominent". which she said could be a cyst, fibroid or something else, but wasnt too concerned. I have to go back the end of this month for another ultrasound. If your doc is experienced, she probably has seen many fibroids and can easily diagnose them. They probably just want to check and make sure everything looks good down there.

From what I understand, they seem to be somewhat common. with me, I am not sure what it is. hopefully, when I go back they will be able to tell me.

It is good you went! dont worry about the ultrasound, it isnt bad. just trust your doc! keep us posted!!

It might also be process of elimination. I.e., she asks you questions or you fill out a form and it says you're not pregnant, you have normal periods, etc. etc. etc. -- things in your standard history help to rule out stuff a lumpy uterus could be, so what is left is -- fibroids (or whatever else).
