Thank you so much for the response Dr. Bhupinder. I do not have a IUD, married for 20 years, no sex for a while, so it was confusing to me. I had recently had a treatment of 10 days of Amoxicillin for upper resp. infection just before my visit to the OB/GYN for this treatment.I was not sure if that could have caused something. I never use douches. I did not notice a smell, but had discharge milky white.  I was told that is was a bacterial infection, but was confused on how I could get it. I was examines and my discharge was sent out for examination. It was determined bacterial infection. I was prescribed Metro Gel, 5 nights and Doxycycline for 7 days 2x a day. I am not sure if I have to be re-examined and that this is all set. I will have to call the doctor.

Hello,
It could have been bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is the most common cause of abnormal vaginal odor and discharge. It is caused by a change in the type of bacteria found in the vagina.
The exact cause for the change in type of bacteria is still not known, but it is can be due to IUD’s,multiple sex partners or having intercourse with a new partner.

In addition to unpleasant "fishy" vaginal odor, thin white or yellowish discharge from vagina may also be present. Diagnosis can be confirmed after pelvic examination and microscopic examination of the vaginal discharge. Treatment is by metronidazole((Flagyl, MetroGel) and clindamycin (Cleocin). They are available as pills or vaginal gels or creams. Please do not use any vaginal douches.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
