Vaginal or Cervical Bleeding

Occasionally, after sex, I bleed. I was told that the bleeding could be caused by my boyfriend's penis hitting my cervix. Apparently, some cells from the inside of my cervix grow on the outside of the os, the cervical opening, which I was told was normal for young women (I'm 23) by my gynocological nurse.

Lately, though, I've been checking my cervical mucus by lightly touching the cervix. The day after I first did it, I noticed a brown discharge when I wiped myself. When I checked my mucus again, there was a streak of blood on my finger. And when I wiped myself right after, the tissue was streaked with a decent amount of blood. After two wipes, the blood was gone, but the next day, I noticed the same brown discharge.

Anyhow, does this sound normal to you? I'm a bit worried, as it doesn't seem right. Could this be caused by vaginal tears, or does it sound like the cervix is getting irritated? My cervix and/or vagina seem/s to be particularly sensitive; it got terribly irritated (to the point bleeding) when I used the Today Sponge. So much so that I had to discontinue using the sponge.

Feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Turns out my bleeding wasn't my cervix it was my womb. If your cervix is bleeding and you don't know why go and see your doctor and if they don't know why get your cervix looked at in a colposcopy appointment, it is the only way to be sure and then when you know what is wrong you can get treatment. Also get tested for STI's.

Regarding a few things posted above -

Cervical mucas can change in consistency throughout a cycle, that is normal and to do with when you ovulate - fully coloured cervical mucas is not normal so see a doctor.

Always have regular pap smears so any unusual cells that occur can be caught early and treated.

Anyone who has had unprotected sex is at risk of STIs, it only takes one time and just because you've only had one partner and your partner doesn't have symptoms doesn't mean they are STI free - many STIs don't show symptoms in many people - most SRIs can be treated easily enough if caught early so get tested! Not being tested won't get rid of it and if left could damage your health and fertility.

Could some of you post what actually was wrong with your cervix that haven't already? I too have a swolen cervix that I think is bleeding (I previously had pre-cancerous cells that were removed and it wasn't swollen when I had them and I've had annual pap/cervical smears since which have all been normal since).

look up "friable cervix" i have it too. ***** and theres nothing they can do! I sometimes wonder if a different diet or change in my birth control pills would help? The docs (2 i have been to so far) said that its just the way my cervix is.

but definitely get it checked because it could be an underlying STD and they can fix it. However all my tests came back OK and they do not know how to fix the problem.

Hey JLD, Im 25 and still have the ectropian thing too - in fact I'm just getting back from my appointment looking it up.  I have on occasion bled after sex, its nice to know why now.  Never tried touching it and stuff, but it sounds like its fairly normal and I wouldn't worry about it, especially since it sounds like you are not at risk for stds.  Apparently this is supposed to go away as we age- I look at it as just having a young cervix :)

I'm definitely considering moving my appointment up by a month or two.

I just remembered that my gynocological nurse told me that I have cervical ectropion, a condition that causes the glandular tissue from the inside of the cervix to protrude onto the outside of the cervix. Apparently, this can also cause bleeding (I'll post the link after my message), so that might very well be my problem. Still, I should get a pap smear just to be on the safe side.

My last pap smear was in May 2005. It was normal. I'm due for another one in May 2006. Should I try to bump up my appointment?

I would bump up my appointment if I were you. As another poster said you could have a problem with your cervix. I am going through treatments right now for cervical cancer and that was my warning sign. Not to scare you at all, but you need to find out what is going on. Good luck.

I don't think it's an infection, either. When I went to the doctor's on January 27th, they swabbed the inside of my vagina to check for infection. They didn't call me back, so it seems everything turned out all right.

Yeah, I think the brown discharge might be old blood from around the cervix.

Well Like the first post said it is a sure sighn of STDs or an infection U also could bleed if your in your early stages of pregnancy from the cervix softing.  One other thing it could be is old blood sitting at the base of your cervix.  That has happened to me a few times

When was your last pap?  Was it normal?  I had moderate dysplasia and had a brown discharge and bleeding after sex.  I didn't have an STD and ended up having a LEEP procedure to fix the problem.  Just to let you know, I had that leep at 24.  Cervical cancer is rare at a young age, but can happen if left untreated.  Good luck!

Nah, I don't douche, and I hardly ever take a bath. I do use tampons, though.

Also, I had sex during my period recently. Could that have caused a problem at all?

Well, I'm pretty sure it's not an STI. I've only had one sexual partner (my current boyfriend), and he's not infected.

The thing is, I saw my gynocological nurse on January 27th of this year, and that's when she told me that. Still, it just seems slightly odd to me. I just don't get why my cervix would be so sensitive that it bleeds when I gently touch it to feel for cervical mucus.

I would definetly have it checked out at the doctors just to make sure, it could just be an irritated cervix, but its better to look into things now, Do you use tampons, bathe in bubbles, douche these can cause irritation, but go check it out!

This ??? has been asked many times lately and some ppl have said that bleeding could be an STD amoung other things.  You may want to search this site a little and see if you can find related questions and see what else has been said.  Sorry I could not be more help.  Hope all is ok.  Good Luck to you.
