Very heavy / long lasting period after weaning baby off breastmilk....

I would appreciate some help please....I had my baby last August, breastfed her till mid February this year. My period came for 1st time after pregnancy on March 10 and it is STILL going on. I am frustrated. I called my ob/gyn after 3 weeks of period letting her know it was getting heavier and huge chunks of blood were coming out, not lighter...she never responded and no one from her office returned my 3 phone calls over the course of a week. I went to the emergency room (last Thursday) on the advice of a nurse hotline, and was prescribed birthcontrol pills and iron supplement. The iron makes me so sick to my stomach I cannot take it any more. I have been taking the birthcontrol pills for one week now, and I still am bleeding, not heavily, but I would say about 80% lighter, but still there. I went to new ob/gyn on Tuesday but now this one is off this week, and my period seems to be coming on stronger. A good friend said it might be an ovarian cyst and I need an ultrasound???? I am beside myself with this situation!! Should I go back to the hospital? I am really upset over this whole thing. Thanks for any help!

I am bleeding too, but i think it is from my thyroid because I haven't taken my meds for about a week and a half.  You should definitely have your thyroid checked.  i have also just weaned my son but am not sure what us causing the bleeding.  I too had my period already about a week and a half ago...it ws heavy and lasted about 5 days.  Now it has come back and is very haeavy again...I feel weak too...if it doesn't go away in a few days I am going to call the doc...I think its mostly because of my thyroid....definitely ask to have urs checked out ...its an easy blood  test.  Good luck

If you cannot stomach the iron supplement, you really should work extra hard to get the extra iron through your diet.

I am a big advocate of people having access to good medical care, so if you feel you are not getting the answers you need, keep pressing on until you do. If that means returning to the hospital, do it. If it means finding a doctor who can address the problem now, do it.

An ultrasound may yeild more answers or it may not. As far as medicine has come over the last several years, sometimes there are no definite answers. My concern would not only be treating the symptoms (heavy bleeding) but also finding out the cause.

Good luck!
