WOMEN IN MENOPAUSE

I am a woman over fifty and I am recovering from a heart attack that I had two years ago. Before the heart attack I was very fit and was a good weight. I had been going through menopause when I had my heart attack. The heart attack was caused by a blockage from high cholosterol. I have put an weight and my cardiologist is harping at me to loose weight. I tried everything in the book to lose weight and I can't. No matter how much I exercise size and watch what I eat it doesn't matter.I walked three miles a day besides the walking I do in work which is probaly another two miles. I put on about 20 pounds and I can't get rid of it. I am so disgusted that I final gave up. I am on the following medications: Toprol XL 100mg - zocor 40mg-
Folbee 1/2 tab - Provera 5mg - Estratest H.S. My sex drive SUCKS big time, I have NO desire what so ever. It's not bad enought that I have a stress full life but now I also have this FAT that I can't get rid of. I went to see an OBGYN, and he said that he realy can't do anything because if he tries hormones it will put more weight on me and if he tries something for my sexual problem it will raise my cholesterol. WHAT AM I TO DO???? I hate being this FAT....   tina, christine

I'm so sorry that you are experiencing such a tough time. No one wants to be heavy or in bad health. I have absolutely no doubts that you are doing everything you can think of to battle the weight. Your doctor has seen it fit to put you on medicine for health reasons. A couple of misc thoughts. One, can diet, accupunture or homopathic approaches be explored to reduce or eliminate some of the medication? Secondly, have you thought about seeking a second option, maybe at a women's health clinic?
I have not gone through menopause myself, but I've dealt with some of the side effects, which sent me straight to researching. Unfortunately, I can't put my hands on the results, but I can tell  you that menopause and hypothroid go hand in hand. Darn, I wish I could put my finger on the details, but I'll look again and post you if I find the test infor (it's good stuff). Anyway, two friends of mine had this same problem, one with cholesterol problems, went on throid meds and are different people. The weight loss was just part of it. The mood swings were vanished as well! good luck

tina, chistine...me again. Okay, I found some notes. Look up "hypothyroidism and PCOS". I don't have a web address, but one of my printouts is headed "Natural Health Solutions for PCOS...Health review #12. The symptoms listed may have you nodding your head. It suggest a TSH test. Futher is mentions "Normal TSH (results) are too wide". They suggest 0.50 - 2.50 verses .50-5.00.
Also, check out "estrogen, menopause and thyroid" (goggle it). About-Breaking News: estrogen.....by Richard and Karilee Shames". The article says: "Perhaps the biggest potential for mischief in the whole thyroid field is in the arena of women's health and menopause....by age 50, one in 12 women has a significant degree of hypothyroidism". This second article may be the one for you.

I hope this information helps.

Good thought about the thyroid--could be an issue.

Also, many times we think we are "doing everything right" so far as diet and exercise...but don't take into account every single thing that crosses our lips.  I include myself in this group, by the way!

A bite of this, taste of that, extra Coke here and there can EASILY add up to a thousand extra calories a day.  People usually drastically underestimate what they take in each day.  For example--about a year ago I was beginning to watch my calories.  I learned that what I THOUGHT was "a portion" of something actually wasn't!  I would eyeball things and when I got a scale and began using measuring cups--I got a good lesson in WHY I wasn't losing weight.  A chicken breast, for example, is 2 servings, not ONE.  I was counting it as one portion.  I'd heap some mashed potatoes on my plate and count it as a serving, when in fact a serving is 1/2 cup and what I was giving myself was closer to a cup and a half!  I wouldn't count a cookie here and there at work, a handful of chips, a coke...and often just ate these unconsciously.  I'd get up at night and make a PB sandwich and the next day "forget" to add it in my calorie allowance.

Get a scale and measuring cups, and you may get an eye opener as to how much you are actually taking in--I was absolutely shocked.  I was supposed to be on 1400 cal/day, and if I honest about it, I'd say I took in about 2000 cal/day with my eyeball method!  And when I walked--I thought I was walking a lot, but when I actually got in my car and drove my walking route, it wasn't the 2 miles my pedometer said--more like a little over a mile.  And walking ISN'T strolling...walking a mile, really hoofing it, is hard and you will sweat.  I was just strolling along.  When I picked up the pace and almost race walked, I couldn't believe the difference.

Once I started measuring, weighing, and semi race-walking, the pounds started coming off.  If you aren't into measuring, here's a trick--get those divided plates that have 3 sections.  Your meat portion should fit into one of the SMALL compartments, your starch serving into another SMALL compartment, and your veggies should fill the BIG compartment!  Very easy way to portion control you meals.

Now--I have pretty much myself given up on weight loss, but I talk a good game, don't I?  I have gained a ton of weight but I absolutely know why and how I'm getting the extra calories.  It's getting my rear end in gear to do something about it that's hard.  (And I tell my doctor religiously that I am dieting and exercising..which is a bald face lie to myself and to her.  I eat blindly and don't get as much exercise if I am honest with myself, which I am not).

Good luck to you.  If you are measuring and weighing your food and doing all these things yet still can't lose weight, my apologies to you for implying you are'nt.  Just pointing out areas where a lot of people (like me) take in more than they think, or don't expend as much as they think.

I'm 49 and in premenopause. I found out that I had hypothyroidism and an ovary that needed to be removed. The thyroid problem did make me tired and I gained weight. The thyroid medication is giving me problems like joint pain, insomnia, but I am losing weight, The dr. just thinks that the pain is either all in my head or I haven't taken enough yet. But my thyroid levels are fine.Other members have the same problems on the thyroid forum. You might want to ask your dr.to have your thyroid levels checked and read the comments and questions in the thyroid forum.
