What do you Think? need advice! =)

Hi everybody! quick question of the day! I was just reading online on how to take care of yourself on early pg etc and it said something about if you work long hours mostly standing on your feet or lifting heavy things, you have to be careful with. well Im about 5 weeks and I work at a petstore where all the day I don't get to sit, 9 hour shift, and usually I have to lift some things for customers like cases of cans (12 a case) pg or not 24 case I just can't lift! none of my co-workers know I am, because I don't want to share the news just yet. do you think I should worry about my work affecting my pg? should I ask for shorter shifts? last time I had to take a break after standing there for 6 hours! because my lower back was killing me but as soon as I left to sit there goes the manager calling me back to my place!!!! today I have to work a 9 hours shift all the way till 11pm let's see how that goes! by 9 Im already in place to sleep! what are your thoughts?

Don't feel bad for NOT doing the things you are concerned about like lifting and such. This is your health and the health of your baby. I would tell the Manager so that when you can't do something, he/she will understand. If you aren't ready to share your news then maybe tell them your back is hurting?
People don't usually think much about it if a woman says she can't lift a 40 pound bag of chow.LOL
Glad you are feeling so good in your pregnancy. Now keep it that way;)

I know exactly how you feel, i also work in a pet/reptile store and i have to do a lot of lifting fish tanks, vivariums etc.  I also did nine hour shifts, i really sympathise with you because i was soooo tired up untill three months.

I also pulled my back a lot, in the end i just thought for the sake of myself and my baby then i would have to tell someone, im sure if you took your manager to one side and had a quiet word with them about whats going on and how you are feeling they would understand.

Please be carefull, i got the cramps too and had to rest for a week before they stopped, it really scared me.  I wouldnt worry about what to say about customers, perhaps you could just say that you have really bad back problems.

Good luck :)

Thank you for your answer!  no I won't change any kitties litter box! I've read about that too. scary.  Thank you girls I guess what I need to do is listen to my body. I guess even if I don't want to I'll have to at least let a manager know because I do need at least a break in between some hours without being called back to work immediately! I've been feeling really good! no sings of anything bad! I have almost no symptoms besides breast tenderness at times and Im really reallyyyy tired!  let'see how we do working until 11pm tonight! see if I fall asleep somewhere lol the only thing I don't like is having to pick up these cases, I stopped doing it when I got those cramps last time but Im afraid Im about to get yelled at by somebody for not doing it! and what to tell the customer that ask..I need help carrying that 40 pound bag!!!

In early pregnancy you just kinda have to listen to your body and when you are tired lay down and take a nap or just sit in a chair and put your feet up (i liked the nap idea :) But if you work at a pet store if they have cats you CANNOT change the liter box that is a big no no at anytime in your preg. congratulations and good luck

Thank you for your answer! I've concerned about too because about two days ago I was really feeling crappy with my back hurting and all, I could stand it! but it was terrible too, I remember I lift a couple of things for customers and as soon as I did I started getting cramps that would come and go for like 5 minutes, that's when I tried getting a break and it helped a lot, but they didn't let me rest for longer than 5 minutes. Im just really scared and don't wanna do anything that could harm this pregnancy. Thank you like you said I have to be the judge. I definetely will not use this as an excuse, we need the money more than ever, one of my ideas was to ask them for shorter shift maybe and ask for one more day to work a week to make up for those lost hours. because as soon as I get home Im usually going straight to bed lately! so tired =/

It's so hard in early pregnancy.  I stand all day long too and helped to set up a new store during my first trimester, lots of lifting, but not too heavy.  I did tell my boss though, because I was really sick and had to keep running for the bathroom vomiting several times a day at work and home.  I think you need to use your judgement and decide what's best for you.  My Dr. was okay with what I was doing, just told me not to lift more than 40 lbs., but I already have a little one at home, so I'm used to lifting a lot and was not about to stop during this pregnancy.  Be prepared for your boss to be concerned about how this will affect your job, some are great and will work around it in the beginning, I know my boss was kinder about not scheduling me so late since I got really sick at night, some will be jerks and expect you to prove that you can keep up.  If it's really hard on you then consider telling your boss what's going on and asking for shorter shifts, or see if you can have someone else do that lifting for you.  It gets better once you get past the first trimester.  One of my co-workers went part time though so she could rest.  Another gal I work with just transferred in and is due 3 days after me.  She sits on her butt all day eating and comlpaining, calls in "tired" if she calls at all and shows maybe once a week out of the 3 scheduled.  That's a bit extreme and she is on the verge of losing her job, my point, just don't use pregnancy as an excuse, but take care of yourself and put yourself first.  Sorry this was so long, hope you feel better soon!
