What is wrong with my 16 year old daughter.

My daughter has experienced severe menstrual cramps and heavy periods.  She also has been experiencing severe leg and foot pain in both legs during her cycles.  I took her to a gynecologist for the past two months.  She was prescribed birth control which has helped with the heavy/painful periods however her leg pain has continued.  She missed one of her birth control pills which made her period start.  She still has two weeks before she was to start.  We went back to the doctor today because she could barely walk.  She can not stand straight as the pain is so intense in her calves and her feet are tingling.  She looks like a 90 year old man trying to walk.  There have been occasions that we have had to carry her to her bed because the pain was so intense.  Her gynecologist has suggested that we go to a Spinal Institute as she seems to think that it is not gyno related,  even though it only happens when she starts her period.  She said it could be something that is triggered by her hormonal changes and they would most likely do an MRI to investigate it further.  I did ask her if she could have sciatic endometriosis but she didn't think that was the case.  I have watched month after month the pain she is in and it is breaking my heart.  She cries and I can't do anything to help her.  I have taken her to the ER the last time we went through this and they ran all sorts of test an they all came back normal.  They even did an xray of her back and said they didn't see anything out of the ordinary.  She has been given pain medicine which in my opinion will only mask the problem.  Even after taking the pain med,  she is still in pain.  Can anyone help shed some light on what this could be.  I am so frustrated and the medical bills are rolling in but still no answers.  No child should have to live in such pain every 3-1/2 weeks.

Thanks for your replies.  Yesterday when she woke up,  she looked like a 90 year old man trying to walk.  I took her straight to our family doctor as her gyno had said it was out of expertise.  We went to her on Tuesday.  Ultra sound was performed and it showed normal.  The doctor said she thought we needed an MRI and was going to refer us to a Spinal Institute for further studies.  Yesterday at our family doctor,  he immediately ordered a Nerve Study with a Neuro and also a MRI.  He wanted it done yesterday but the sooniest we could get in was Thursday, (2days).  She looks like her body (hips to feet) is siezing.  She can't put any weight on her heels and she can"t straighten her legs.  She is walking on her tip toes and with her legs bent in order not to have pain.  When our family doctor had her on the table and extended her leg and rotated her ankle,  he cried.  Pray for us a good outcome.  I am at my witts because there is definitely, without a doubt something wrong.

Sorry for posting again but my point to was even though they found some Endometriosis, I don't think they found it all.  Even after my surgery I was back in pain in about a month.  If it gets much worse I'm going to be finding me a new dr. as well.  Please if you find out any answers yourself OR if things change with your daughter..and she sees the person she needs and gets the help she needs let me know!!  Take care!!

I suggest a laparoscopy and a good dr. who will listen to you!!  They've told me for yrs that I was "okay".  I believe I have sciatic endo as well.  I DID have a laprascopy in June 2010 and they found Endometriosis, cyst on fallopian tube and polyp in the middle of my uterus.  Before that though they wanted me to do the whole birth control pills and I LOVED them as far as my bleeding. I went from bleeding buckets (sorry TMI) to hardly bleeding at all BUt my pain was still there, if not more. :(   I'm sooo sorry you're both having to go through this.  Anyways, my dr. sent me to another quack dr. who set me up with an MRI and X-ray of my lower back because I have severe chronic back pain and guess what??? NOTHING showed up because there's nothing there.  Well for me anyways. I have alot of pain that runs down my hips and even in my calves.  I STILL think it's Endo related because mine hurts the absolute worst when I start my period. And by worst I mean in the bed for 3 days all knocked out because the pain is so bad I pass out or throw up from it.   NO ONE should be in that much pain without a reason!!   I really hope this doesnt' get me in trouble on here but they won't give me anything for pain either.  SO when hubby had a broke foot he didn't take them all, well I'd hang on to them in case we neede them and thank god I did.  I have a very low tolerance for pain anyways, so  a half of a pain pill knocks me out.  That's the ONLY way I can deal with that pain is just sleep through it.  It's aboslutely misreable and I truely feel for your daughter.  I'm sure it's hard as you as the mom being unable to help.  I'm sorry for that also.  Hubby just sits by me and tries to help calm me, relax.   I've tried hot baths, heating pads, combinations of everything and nothing helps.  Please, My advice would be to get her to another gyno..a 2nd opinion and go from there. Suggest the laparoscopy and see what they say, how they react!!   Alot of dr.'s don't want to listen and hardly believe that we can be in so much pain but we are.. and we need help!    I wish you both the very best and I pray she gets some help soon.  You're a wonderful mother and doing everything you can for her!!   Please, if you need to talk or ask questions feel free to message me or post back on this. :)   Good luck to you both, take care!

I agree with you totally!  My question.  Have you thought about putting her on a birth control pill to stop cycle?  I never had anything to this extend but my periods were terrible and my mother and OBGYN agreed to put me on birth control even though I wasn't sexually active.  It was life changing.  But, I agree you need to see a Neurologist and need MRI.  Maybe the dr's can work together to get this resolved.  Sounds like there might be something else going on.  You are right the pain meds are masking the problem and no child should ever have to live like this.  You are a good mom!  I recently had my 11 yr old son diagnosed with possible MS and the pains of that event were awful!  I never gave up and didn't take "I don't know" for an answer.  I am impressed by your dr. that they did not mention psych.  You know your child so don't let anyone lead you in that direction.  Hang in there and I wish you the very best!
