What to expect after Methtextrate shot

Hi,

I got the methotextrate shot on Tuesday of this week.  After two years of trying to get pregnant at 43 years old, we finally conceived.  We found out 5 weeks into the pregnancy that the hormone levels weren't going up like they should and the doctor felt it was either an ectopic pregnancy or an impending miscarriage.  I had the choice of the shot or surgery.
I'm just not sure what to expect after the shot.  I was spotting a little for 5 days before the shot.  I continued to spot for 3 days after the shot.  Now it seems that I am having my period.  The bleeding has gotten a little heavier and some clotting.  I had blood work done on Thursday to check the level of my HSG.  The doctor didnt call, so, I assume it was falliing like it should.  I go back to see her on Tuesday after having another HSG test done on Monday.  I just wanted to know what to expect and is this period  like bleeding normal with clotting?

Hi, I just had the shot (one in each arm) 4 days ago. I went to the ER after having bad pains in my lower stomach for about 3 days. I also had some brown discharge. I was thinking it was maybe a miscarriage but, it wasnt. It was a EP. My Gynocologist came to the hospital and gave me a pelvic exam. He didnt see that I was bleeding a lot inside so,  suggested I do the shot. He warned me that if I go home and I start feeling dizzy, I should go to hospital right away ( I would need the surgery). The worst pain was that day at the hospital. I couldnt even walk or lift my legs up. Since the shot 4 days ago, I've been extremely tired and weak. The pain has died down now and just have some cramping and pressure. I just went for my first check up with my OB/GYN  since the ER. I wont have the blood work results until tomorrow. Im hoping the levels have gone down since the shots. I have a planned vacation this coming up this weekend. My doctor wants to see what the levels are before he gives me the permission to go and I also want to have the strength to make the trip. My doctor told me that it might take 3 weeks for a full recovery. I dont know if I can handle feeling this for that long.

I am 33 years old and have experienced an EP. This was my first time being pregnant. I have two wonderful stepsons that are 7 and 9 and would like to have a baby as soon as possible.  September was a crazy month for me emotionally and physically. I
am happy to see it gone, but am scared of what October may bring.

My month went like this ...

9/2 to 9/5 - Menstrual Cycle - Normal
8 days later: 9/13 - Started bleeding with pain on the right - Very concerned since I had just had my menstrual cycle and was suppose to be ovulating.  My husband & I were trying to have a baby so we were monitoring my ovulation.

1 day later: 9/14 - Went to the doctor and had a positive
pregnancy test. - Happy but very concerned about the bleeding and pain. The bleeding was very dark sometimes red and sometimes brown. HCG was 1894. Had an ultrasound but saw nothing. Doctor ordered HCG for 9/16 to make sure it was a normal pregnancy. Said it just could have been too early to see anything.

2 days later: 9/16 - HCG was 951 so doctor told me I had a very early miscarriage. Had another ultrasound done and nothing showed up. Was told I needed to wait 3 months to try again. Doctor gave me a prescription for three month of BCPs. Doctor ordered HCG on 9/26 to monitor level.

10 days later: 9/26 - HCG was 3540. Immediately went to doctors office for ultrasound and saw a swollen Fallopian right tube. It was determined to be an EP not a miscarriage. I had additional blood work done and was then given the Metho shot. I had already taken three BCPs. The doctor told me to discontinue the BCPs, my prenatal vitamin and intercourse until the EP is completely gone.  Doctor ordered an HCG for 10/3 to see if the Metho worked.

The pain from the Metho shot has been nothing like the doctor said it would be.  I haven't even filled the prescription he gave me for pain meds.  The first 3 days after the Metho shot I still had the pain on the right and little to no bleeding. The 4th day the pain was very painful and a little bleeding came. On the 5th day a lot of pink goey (sp ??) stuff came out and the pain was not bad at all. Day 6 I had little to no pain and some light pink bleeding. Today I have had a little pain but not a lot and my lab results just came in.  My HCG is at 3344. That is down 196 from the day I got the Metho shot which was 9/26 (6 days ago). I am very disappointed and getting scared. I'm wondering if the doctor will tell me I have to have surgery when I go to my appt tomorrow. I sure hope not. Perhaps he'll give me another shot. He said this was also an option if the 1st one didn't work. Is the HCG level suppose to slowly decline or quickly drop? I don't have the pain on my right side anymore at all really. I did start bleeding today but with no pain and it wasn't real light and not real heavy. My body kinda feels like I feel when I'm on my menstrual cycle. That's what I thought was going on until I saw my HCG level. My menstrual cycle can't be here if the level is still 3344. I wish this would all go away......

I too had a Methtextrate shot on Friday (9/22) for an ectopic pregnancy.  I had been bleeding/spotting for about 2 weeks prior to getting the shot.  I continued to bleed lightly/spot over the weekend and into yesterday, however last night I began bleeding heavily and experienced some cramping, slightly stronger than normal period cramps, but not painful.  I had my HCG levels tested yesterday as well and they are down to 420 from the pre-shot level of 491.  I've been very moody/weepy the last two days and am looking for some reassurance that what I am experiencing is normal Methtextrate shot side effects.  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

My levels were:

22DPO HCG 328
24DPO HCG 368
26DPO HCG 488
28DPO HCG 544

I had the shot at 28DPO.  My HCG level was at 488 two days later.  Six days after the shot, my level is down to 225.  I now have to go back in 3 weeks to get my HSG levels again.  However, at my check-up yesterday, I was told that my uterus feels lumpy.  She's not sure if this is because of the pregnancy or not.  I had a pap and pelvic done in July and nothing showed up then.  So, once my HCG level is down to zero, she wants an ultrasound done.

I have been bleeding since I had the shot 8 days ago (at first lightly, but like a normal period since Friday).  Mondays night at about 3am, I passed something large.  I say something because I have been passing clots since Friday, but this "felt" different.  And once it hit the toilet, I could hear it hit.  I started at that time bleeding very heavily and bled heavily for about 2 hours.  I dont know if this was when I passed the sac or not.  I could not see "it" in the toilet because of the way I was bleeding.

The doctor has said we must wait 2 months to try again.

Anyone wishing to correspond, having any input, etc., please email me back at ***@**** as I "forget" to check this site daily.

how high were your HCG levels??  Mine are really low....49 three days before the shot, then 68 the day before the shot.  I just had blood drawn today (day 4 after shot) so i don't have the result yet.  My doctor seems to think that since the levels are soooo low, one shot should do it.  I hope so, but I am still bleeding.

I have had  the Metho shot twice. The first one was in June 06 and I didnt bleed for about a week after the shot and it was like a normal AF.
The 2nd shot I had was in Aug 06 and I had been bleeding for awhile prior to the shot, and 4 days after the shot I still had BAD abdomindal pains and went into ER and I had an ectopic pregnancy that ruptured one of my tubes.

i just got methotrexate injection as well on friday, but i have been feeling ok so far.  I am concerned about my bleeding though.  I was originally told i had a chemical pregnancy and my bleeding was just my period.  2 and 1/2 weeks later i found out that i actually had an ectopic and finally got a methotrexate injection and I am still bleeding.  All together, I have been bleeding for three weeks now... anyone else experience this???  I have had numerous u/s and all normal.

Do you mean that you will have a follow up on your hcg levels? That's the most important thing- that you doctor monitors your levels. Your bleeding sounds normal, but I had a D&C before metho, so it's not what I experienced.

Methotrexate is hard on the body. Don't be surprised if you feel kind of blue or blah. I had a lot of gas-like pains in my abdomen, too.

I'm sorry for your loss and hope that you are able to TTC again soon.
