Why have I been lightly bleeding for over a month now?

Over a month ago I started some light bleeding. I thought it was my period, because the flow got heavier, then lighter again, but it hasn't stopped. I've had a history of ovarian cysts. I don't think it was a cyst rupture because I've been told that that is very painful. I haven't had any pelvic pain or cramping during this unknown bleeding. My actual period started and I've been bleeding VERY heavily for 10 days now. I'm making a GYN appt soon, I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks!
