X-rays affecting DNA

by seph, Nov 28, 2005 12:00AM
X-rays affect the structure of DNA.  This becomes a problem when DNA in the gametes is affected.   I understand that unlike men, women already have produced all their gametes at birth.
Wouldnt all eggs be affected if a woman had x-rays taken at any point in her life?
If so, what is the likehood?  If not, why?

All people up until the age of 65 should be wearing a lead apron to cover their gonads whenever they have xrays. If the tech does not protect you with an apron, I would report them. The lead apron is a must in Canada, and is part of the training of xray techs.
If you were exposed to xrays, which does happen if you are having images of your pelvis, hips, lower back, tailbone, or having a barium enema, kidney xrays or bladder xrays, you have to consider risk vs benefit. Xrays performed on the general population are very safe, as long as you are not having lots of them each and every year. Most technogists use a high kVp technique which allows most xrays to pass through you.
As a matter of fact, you get more exoposure to radiation by taking a airplane flight than you would from a routine xray due to high levels of radiation in the atmosphere. You can also get radiation from a car drive or smoking a cigarette.
Hope this helps.
