I am dealing with my first yeast infection (I'm 28) and I am starting to wonder why I am still experiencing symptoms after treatment.
My symptoms started after I had been swimming a lot in a quarry. I had external vulval redness and vulval/anal itching, tingling, discomfort. No discharge that I noticed.
I let the infection go for 6 weeks before seeing a Gyn. I tried treating at home first, with monistat 3 - and when that didn't work at all - natural remedies like tea tree oil, but to no avail. It took a couple of weeks to get in to see the gyn so I drugged myself with Benadryl to sleep at night, which stopped helping after a few days.
At my appointment my Gyn did an annual pap smear, and tested for yeast, Chlamydia, Gonnorhea (Gonorrhea), Syphilis, HIV, Hepatitis - all came back normal except yeast was positive. She gave me 2 diflucan to be taken a few days apart and told me it was ok to continue to use the monistat cream externally if I wanted.
Well I used the monistat cream day and night for 3 more days. Took both doses of diflucan as directed, and have been keeping the area dry and wearing loose clothing - but it has been 12 days since I took the first dose of diflucan and the external redness, itching is still there!
I can't sleep through the night. I wake up at 3-4am like clockwork itching like crazy for an hour and then I sleep though the rest of the night without issue. During the day it hasn't been bad at all as long as I keep the area dry with vagisil powder- this doesn't have anti-itch ingredients btw, it's mostly corn starch based.
I know yeast infection can happen when anything is unbalanced down there, so I am wondering if there is a root problem that hasn't been treated yet. I also read that many women test positive for yeast all the time.
I read itching at night like I described could be pinworms. I have not seen anything out of the ordinary but I don't know if I necessarily would.
I will call my Dr. and make another appt. but I know it will take days to get in. She does not answer phone calls or call patients back.
I'm starting to wonder if I should go into urgent care and ask for another yeast test, and if it is negative, ask for other tests like pinworm, strep B/staph, and an external swab to look for other strains of candida or fungi.
Maybe even a diabetes test and WBC if yeast is positive again.
This all might sound like crazy hypochondriac rambling, but I just don't feel like - and can't afford to - keep going back to the doc repeatedly.
Has anyone else been through this? Does this sound like yeast or something more? Thanks!
y were you swimming in a dirty quarry anyway? try natural plain yogurt dwn there and rinse off with just plain warm water. avoid soaps and perfumed products down there as this will add to irritation. try the yogurt for a few days and still make an appt to go back and get further swabs done. good luck!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, I have had these same issues. Although it has been ongoing for over 2 years now. My paps always show positive for yeast yet I dont have anything like the cottage cheese some people have, just a clear/whitish discharge that seems pretty normal. I am more than likely immune to Difflucan & Monistate products as they have never worked. I also did a "Yeast Buster Trauma Kit" which included taking Psyllium, Caproil, Bentonite Clay & DDS Acidophilus. This acidophilus apparently releases hydrogen peroxide which helps control the yeast and other pathogens. It also included a very strict diet omitting all sweets except stevia, anything fermented and with yeast in it, processed foods, fruit, milk and red meat. Even brown rice was on the reduce list and it was one of the few things I can eat as Im also a Celiac and on a gluten free diet already. I did it for 6 weeks as well as used the Monistat cream and difflucan pill at the end. Guess what....I still have yeast. Like you Its worse at night, my sex life with my boyfriend has been drastically deminished and Im always squirming as its so uncomfortable and itchy. I have also been doing "manual" cleaning in the tub (no soap or hot water) with salt in the water to try and debride some of the damaged tissue around my perineal area. Ive tried many corticosteroids, tucks, boric acid, sitz baths (salt), a vasoconstrictor which did have side effects such as a racing heart and Massive pain when applied, as well as an antifungal. Currently Im trying a salve of honey and coconut oil which seems to help the itching and pain for a short time...till I go to bed.
I also have Asthma, eczema and allot of allergies as most premies do. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism as a teenager which is another whole problem in itself as it was upgraded to Hashimotos years ago as I had antibodies on my thyroid. About 12 years ago I also was treated for fissures/hemerroids which seem to get infflamed and agrivated by the yeast now. Clearly I already have several immunity disorders and had my doctor test me for AIDS/HIV etc when I returned from Cuba a couple years ago with some kidney/flank pain; so we know its not that. I do tend to like my sweets but you would think not eating anything with yeast/yeast causing foods would have helped somewhat. I have had my blood sugars tested however there has been a few incidents they have been slightly elevated (9-10). I change my shower towel every few days, wash my hands dilligently including scrubbing under my nails and to my dismay abstaining from sex due to the discomfortable and not wanting to risk cross-contaminate my boyfriend. Im now too the point where I saw a Chinees medicine practitioner that gave me a list of concotions to try. I will see what my GP and Gyne can add but predict they will suggest what I have already tried many times. Im at my wits end.
