abdominal pain, extremely large cyst etc

About 5 months ago I started my period and was in so much pain I went to the emergancy room, it was unbarable, they did blood tests and a pelvic ultrasound, for about three days it didn't subside I kept returning, couldn't even walk on my own. Since that time I have not had a momments rest, still very much in pain, my lower abdomen is tender to touch, has a throbbing pain and sharp pains into my vaginal, becomming unbarable around every period. The results of my ultrasound showed an extremely large cyst on my left ovary (4.7cm) and showed that my endometrial stripe was some what thick but still with in normal limits. My doctor doesn't believe that is the reason for the pain and despite my requests he would not refer me to a Gynacolagist, he ordered several digestive related test, all have come back normal, but until today he wouldn't refer me. Do you believe there is reason to believe it could be the cyst that is causing the pain, I am just so scared, upset and tired of the pain. Is a cyst that size something to worry about or is it possibly nothing. I am 30 years old, 5'7, 135 pounds have very regular periods and very much wanting more kids. Thank you for your time.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiance with me and for your advice, it's nice to know it's not just me. Not that I want people to suffer too, but that this may be a common problem, I just wish my Dr had of got me into see a Gyno along time ago, like I asked. Anyways Thanks again (to every one)

I was just going thru the archeives when I had asked a question. The last person to give advice was "frustrated and scared"  I just thought that it was a little ironic that you posted advice to me days ago and I randomly posted advice to you without realizing who I was helping!  Alright that is all!!

I agree with everyone who has told you to go to a gynocologist!  I was in the same situation last February.  What started as feeling fine thru the day turned into starting to feel sick and then minutes after being on the ground in horrible pain.  Unfortunatly I was at work and wasn't able to go to bed and curl up which is what I had usually done for years.  I had thought that it was a painful period and thought that every woman experiences pain every month.  So for 10 yrs I tolerated it.  But not that day. My boss called 911 beacuse I was on the verge of passing out.  I was going into shock by the time the ambulance arrived.  I waited to see a dr at the emergency room but after a few hrs i felt better and was discharged. I went to my dr the next morning when I started having the same knife-stabbing pain. She said it could be a stomach bug. I had blood work done and nothing was detected. I went to a gyno and he found several cyst on both ovaries. The one on the left was 3cm. All he did was perscribe birth control. Month after month I went thru the same thing.  My cysts were rupturing and were being tangled. Eventually it started happening even when I was not expecting my period. So  I got a second opinion and was put on a different birth control which made it much better.  It has been at least 6months since a rupturing cyst. I have had sonograms done every 2months or so to see if the cysts are shrinking in size. I haven't have any form on the right ovary since the new pill and the one on the left is normal size. (It is normal to have cysts. They are not always harmful)  I have been off the pill and ttc for the past 3months and have yet to have any cyst pain. I know I wrote a novel but if you get nothing but this out of it I will feel like I helped.  You are the only one who can help yourself. Don't take no for an answer if you feel like the dr's aren't helping. You might have to go on the pill for a few months to help and once you see a change and you are ready to start ttc, hopefully you will be 100% better.  GO SEE A DOCTOR!

Are you at risk for STD (>1 partner, partner having sex with others)?  Your symptoms are consistent with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) with a tubo-ovarian abscess, as well as ovarian cyst.  Or your symptoms could be due to an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy, if there is any chance you are pregnant.  In any case, to be on the safe side you should get a second opinion right away.

Hello again, I looked up the signs and symptoms of PID and Thank Goodness I don't believe I have any of them. I do not suffer from fevers and when I went to the hospital and my Doctors my temp and vital signs were normal, I do not have a discharge that I believe to be abnormal pretty much the same as it always has been ( give or take a couple days a month for ovulation), definately no odour, as I stated in my posted question my periods are very regular, every 28 days faithfully ( so faithful that if I don't get it on the 28th day I wear a pad to bed because I know I'll wake up with it, and as for intercourse we're still having it so it can't be all that painful. My pain is in my lower abdomen,I had an ultrasound, they did not mention an etopic pregnancy ( they checked my uterous and ovaries) Anyways Thanks again

Thank you for responding, but I don't think there's much of a chance for us to cheat, unfortunately we don't have to much of a life out side of our family and work. When we do go out we pretty much socialize together. I had a Cyst when I was 18, 19, but it went away on it's own, this one isn't. I've been to the emergancy room several times, they did blood work, a pelvic exam and ultra sound, also my Doctor has done blood work, pelvic exam and pap test everthing except the ultrasound has come back normal. All I know is I'm in constant pain that gets more severe with my periods, I am scheduled to see a Gyn in two weeks, Thank God I don't think I can take much more of this. Thanks again.

I agree.  You definately need to see a gyn.  You probably should be having another ultrasound too.  Insist on it.  Sorry to hear about your pain.  Keep us posted.

Your doctor is wrong. Very large cysts such as that CAN cause an enormous amount of pain, I know because I've had them on my left and right ovaries; one the size of a grapefruit on my right ovary. Is he treating the cyst at all? Because it can rupture and the contents therein can enter into the abdominal cavity, causing you even more problems.

You really need to be seen by a gynecologist so he/she can run some more tests. It could be that you are just suffering from this one cyst or it could be PCOS(polycystic ovarian syndrome)and you need to be treated. If your doctor refuses to refer you, perhaps you should find a new doctor.
