antibiotics and birth control pill

by Mikey23, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
Hi, I have a few questions. My girlfriend and I had sex about two weeks ago for about three or four minutes, without a condom. I never climaxed or ejaculated before we stopped. It was our first time having sex that day and I had urinated atleast 5 or 6 times that day before intercourse. She is on the pill but has been on strong antibiotics 500mg (amoxicillin) for about 2 weeks. How safe do you think we are in regards to pregnancy? Thanks, Mike

Not sure, but you need to be careful!  Especially if she is on antibiotics, they tend to lessen the effectiveness of the pill, it's one of those things that the pharmacist warns you about when you fill an antibiotic.  Have her take a test if she's late.

If she is taking both the Birth Control Pills and Antibotics then YES!, she can get Pregnant. Antibotics make BC pills ineffective. Be Careful! Get her a test if she becomes late for her period.   Good Luck!

How old is she? :)

by Mikey23, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
she is 25.  I know that technically it is possible, any time you have sex you are taking the chance of getting pregnant.  I just wanted to know how good or bad the chances of her being pregnant were.  Thanks

She more than likely is not Pregnant. I mean you said you were only involved for about 3 or 4 minutes. If you didn't do anything in her then you should be ok.  I who tell her to watch for her period and if she is a couple of days late then tell her to take a Test. Good Luck!

Anyone elses thoughts??

by have 2 kids, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
pregnancy is always a possiblity, especially because antibiotics lessen the effectiveness of bc and even though you didn't *** in her there is always the possibility of pre-*** containing sperm.
If she doesn't get her period on time she should definately take a pregnancy test.

by Mikey23, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
I understand that pregnancy is always a possibility.  Any time you have sex, you take that risk.  I just want to know the chances.  Are they good or bad, etc.  Thanks for your post though.

by have 2 kids, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
no one can tell you for sure if your chances are good or bad it all depends on the ferility of both of you.   It's 50/50

by Mikey23, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
so being on the pill still as opposed to not being on the pill still keeps it at 50/50?    And not climaxing or ejaculating still keeps it at  at 50/50 as opposed to ejaculating inside of her??  This doesnt seem right?   The pill, as well as no ejaculation must carry some weight in the situation....

by AMA17, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
hey mikey --  look, there is ALWAYS a chance that someone can get pregnant - there are many here that either have, or know someone who got pregnant while on the pill, while using a condom, or by using any other form of BC...

It's going to be a waiting game for you. Wait until her period to see - if she gets it, then i guess you're lucky, and be smart next time, you will save yourself a lot of anguish. No one here can tell you for sure, it's up to nature. There are alot of circumstances to consider that we won't know - ie, how fertile she is, you are, timing, was she ovulating, etc etc etc etc....

so you have to be the one to figure out your chances based on both of your personal circumstances. YES, antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of the pill... the fact that you didnt c*m inside, helps, BUT (the dreaded but) you just never know!

Just wait & see - then let us all know.

"I never climaxed or ejaculated before we stopped. It was our first time having sex that day and I had urinated atleast 5 or 6 times that day before intercourse. She is on the pill..."

Your chances are very low.  You're fine.

With the exception of rifamprin, antibiotics do NOT alter the effectiveness of birth control. Now, before anyone starts posting about how their best friend's sister's boyfriend's cousin's exgirlfriend got pregnant while taking antibiotics and the pill, remember that the pill is not 100% effective. Studies have shown that the percentage of women getting pregnant while on the pill and antibiotics is exactly the same as the percentage of women who got pregnant while just taking the pill.

You have nothing to worry about.

by AMA17, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
hey monkeyflower -- I've heard various mixed reviews on that - my doc says most kinds of BCP & antibiotics don't mix, and I've heard the contrary as well..  for example:

"Antibiotics that have been shown to interact with birth control pills include rifampin (brand name Rifadin), penicillin (Veetids), amoxicillin (Amoxil), ampicillin (Omnipen), cotrimoxazole (Septra or Bactrim), tetracycline (Sumycin), minocycline (Minocin), metronidazole (Flagyl), and nitrofurantoin (Macrobid or Macrodantin)."

vs.

"Penicillin and ampicillin both have the potential to interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills"

vs.

"There are two ways that antibiotics potentially can reduce the action of birth control pills. Birth control pills contain estrogens. Some antibiotics, e.g., rifampin, griseofulvin, cause the enzymes in the liver to increase the break-down of estrogens and thereby can decrease the levels of estrogens in the body and the effectiveness of the pills. This can result in unwanted pregnancy. Therefore, individuals taking birth control pills should use a second method of birth control when taking these antibiotics or other drugs that can increase the break-down of estrogens."

so who do we believe??

by Mikey23, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
hey AMA17,   I understand that there is ALWAYS a possibility of pregnancy when you've had sex.  I also understand that some antibiotics may lessen the pill's effectiveness.  I was just wondering different people's opinions on my specific case here.  Like if people think there's a big chance or a low chance of pregnancy in this case.   Thanks.

by oceans3, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
low chance!

by mslkpage, Nov 16, 2006 12:00AM
Uhhh...I'm gonna guess 6%.

by Crritter, Nov 17, 2006 12:00AM
Okay, just had to say that the above post is so great!!!  I was gonna go with 5%, but I like the other one better.  Too funny, nobody can tell you for sure, just wait it out, and go spend some time with her, you aren't gonna get much more for opinions other than, wait it out, might as well go enjoy your evening.

by mslkpage, Nov 17, 2006 12:00AM
I couldn't decide between 6% and 7%, but I figured 6% would give him one more percent of relief. :)

by JoAnnaRF, Nov 17, 2006 12:00AM
The best birth control that isn't affected by antibiotics and is 100% affective if used properly is the common aspirin. Ladies, just place it between your knees and hold it there. heeheehee This was my Dad's advice about BC when I was 15. No lie.

by JoAnnaRF, Nov 17, 2006 12:00AM
Is it a Man thing? To need things layed out statistically? Waht's up with him needing a percentage on something that NO ONE could ever know??
Can you imagine if the women here COULD ACTUALLY give everyone an accurate percentage as to the possibility of them having conceived?? Waht a Moneymaker site that would be. You could add that feature to the AmIPregnant website for an additional charge!!!

I personally give Mikey a 12% chance of having impregnated his lady friend given the fact that he had only urinated 5 0r 6 times and NOT 7 or 8 times. I think that increased the chances a bit.
And if he had whole wheat toast instead of White toast, well that might bring the chances down by, oh I'd say 1 %.  I'll need to run that info on my trusty, Am I Pregnant calculator.

.

Seriously, you gals are good, should market your skills, guys all over would pay to read your mystical answers!  A question for your skills, I'm 20 weeks pregnant, my belly is getting bigger and I'm tired and moody, do think I really am pregnant?  What are the chances, I do need to see a % here, oh, and I ate white toast today, but put peanut butter on it....okay, I need to stay away from others today, I can see my hormones will be raging, but it's so funny!

by mslkpage, Nov 17, 2006 12:00AM
Would you knock off another percent if his GF takes her pill at exactly the same time every day?

by Crritter, Nov 17, 2006 12:00AM
Depends, were they affected by daylight savings time?  If so then yes, but if not then no.

by Crritter, Nov 17, 2006 12:00AM
Way too cute!  Have to remember that one.
