baby looves to sleep on his stomach

by babyneil, Jun 21, 2007 12:00AM
my baby is ten weeks old i have trouble like most with sleeping.  as soon as i lay him down on his back or side he wakes up.  i pick him up hold him let him fall asleep good put him down and he's wide awake.  but if i put him on his stomach he'll take 1-3 hour naps. now i know they say not to put a baby on their stomach beacuase of SIDS, or SIDS went down since they started the "back to sleep" program but my kid loves to sleeps on his stomach.  i never put him like that at night when i'm sleeping i only do it during the day where i keep a CLOSE eye on him.  but i feel he would sleep better at night i'm just to scared.
i just want to know if anyone else has a baby that just wants to sleep on his stomach, you're feel on SIDS and belly sleeping, or tips on sleeping period. so please help me. thank you

My sister allowed her kids to stomach sleep for naps, if she was right nearby to monitor their breathing.  Another possibility is to roll up a receiving blanket or hand towel into a tight roll, and to put the baby on his side and tuck the towel against his back (lower than his face) to give him some support so he won't roll over.  Many babies who like to stomach sleep also sleep well on their sides, and it's much better re: preventing SIDS.

i have one of those wedge things that helps keep him on his side and i've tried using blankets like that also. at night after a long day of only 10 minute naps he'll finally sleep on his side but it hard to get him back to sleep after he wakes up for his feeding.  he just loves being on his stomach... flat on his belly. i don't know what to do.  plus i'm kinda intiminated by my doctor, she's real nice but when she asks me if im putting him on his back its in a way like "you better be doing it" so i answer "yes maam" like she's my principal or something. so i'm kinda tense about talking to her about it

If I were you i wouldn't let the doctor intimidate you, I have 4 boys and I didn't always do what they told me when mine were born, like feeding schedules, nap time, etc. I fed mine when they got hungry, not every 4 hours like I was told. and all mine also loved sleeping on their stomachs, there isn't anything wrong with it, if a baby isn't comfy their not gonna sleep good, I have a lot of people tell me I got lucky with mine because they all slept all night long.

how old were your kids when you said fine i'll just lay them on there stomach thats how they want to sleep.  im just afraid to go to sleep with him on his stomach. this is my first kid and thats probably why! but i know he would sleep better, longer, and probably won't need me to hold him as much to get him into a deep sleep.  plus i got everyone telling me i'm doing the wrong thing, don't hold him as much, let him cry, dont let him cry, let him be on his belly, don't you dare let him sleep on his stomach, its all confuzing. i just dont want nothing to happen

If he's lifting his head up side to side it should be ok. I used the wedge to keep mine on their side, and it worked until they were strong enough to wiggle onto their stomach. In my opinion, he should be just fine at night on his tummy. Don't put any stuffed animals or anything close to his face. They have done studies that showed that tummy sleepers develop muscles used to support sitting and crawling sooner than back sleepers. I guess that is why my son was crawling and walking early! Best wishes and congrats on your new baby!

My DD is the same...will sleep forever on her stomach! I dont let her do it at night, partly because im just freaked out by the propaganda, but we co-sleep anyway so we lie on our sides facing each other so she can nurse. She is super consistant with waking every 3 hours like this. During the day tho she will wake up if I put her on her side or back. One thing thats important is waiting a good 15 min after they fall asleep before putting them down. That way they are sleeping more deeply and are less likely to wake up. The rolled up blankie doesnt work on mine. She is 8 wks and its like she knows I am trying to trick her! lol..good luck!

Have you tried the Angelcare Bebe Sounds monitor?  It monitors your baby's breathing and heartbeat, and an alarm will sound if there's no movement after 20 seconds.  This is the only way that I feel comfortable letting my baby sleep on her tummy.  It helps me to sleep better at night, knowing that I'll be alerted if she were to stop breathing - God forbid.  The monitor is about $180, but it's worth every cent!
