back pain

by pricej, Dec 02, 2006 12:00AM
Two days ago when I woke up I had a pain in my upper left side of my back (closer to my shoulder, but still in my back). It is not bad pain, but it is hard to turn (like when I'm driving), and it's also hard to get a comfortable position to sleep. About 2 weeks ago it also happened but the pain was much worse. The pain was in the same place, but I could barely walk and was into tears. I was going to go to the ER but where I live your wait in the ER is 7 or more hours. The only way I go to the ER is if my children are sick. The next morning it was better but still very painful. It took about a week to go away completely, but it is back again. I'm just afraid it is going to get that bad this time. At first I thought maybe I slept on it wrong, but the pain I suffered a few weeks ago was awful, and it is in the same place now. Tylenol didn't do anything for the pain. I know I need to go to the doctor, that's not a question, but right now work and family doesn't allow much time. I was wondering if any one has had the same problem. Sorry this was so long. Thank you for reading this.

Hmmm. I don't know, but I wish I did. I know it's hard when your back hurts. Have ya tried puting any creams on it? They make this stuff called stop pain. They sell it at cvs pharmacies. They also have those patches. I wish I could help you more, sorry.I do hope ya feel better though. Take a hot bath. It might help.

I have been having pain in my back also for the past few days it seemed to start near my shoulder blades and kept me up all night Thursday night it to went away and came back today, It resembles the pain if you had a gall bladder attack but I had mine removed 20 years ago, upper back pain is horrible, I have tried heat on top of heat with no releif I haven't tried any ice therapy yet, I am like you, I only go to the Dr. if I know i can't heal myself, they try and drain you for every penny with needless tests , Let me know if you get any help or find a solution for upper back pain..Good Luck

Thanks everyone. the pain has went away agian, but I am just worried that it goes away and comes back. I might just be sleeping on it wrong. If it comes back again then I'll go to the doctor. My friend also suggested galbladder. Hopefully it's just my bed!

Try using ice for 20 minutes, then heat for 20 minutes to loosen the muscles and decrease any swelling. Any pain/mobility/range of motion problems in extremeties may indicate structural damage such as a slipped or bulging disc. The only way to know what is going on is to have x-rays, MRI, CAT, etc.. so you really should see the doc. They can also prescribe a muscle relaxer which will help A LOT.
Sadly I know WAY more about back pain than I would like.
Have had surgery and every treatment under the sun.. I FEEL for you!

I have that same problem on my right upper back between my shoulder blade and spine.  It drives me crazy, it's like a pinched nerve and it usually hurts when I'm at work (doesn't hurt on the weekends) so I'm guessing its stress and bad posture from using the mouse so much! I'm actually going to the Dr. tomorrow because it's been bugging me for months!
