beginning the pill

by lens, Jul 20, 2006 12:00AM
I am 4 months post partum and plan to begin taking the pill again. My doctor told me that I could start taking the on any Sunday OR on the first Sunday after my period begins, however I have not had a period since before my pregnancy. I plan to start taking it this Sunday. Will I get my period right away upon taking the pill or will I get it once I get though the first pill pack? Thanks for your medical knowledge!

You will get your period after you finish the first three weeks of birth control, (the last week of pills are the sugar pills.)  You only take the "sugar" pills, (i.e., the last week of  the pills pack) as a reminder so you are consistantly taking the pills everyday more or less at the same time.  I'm sure your doctor wants you to wait until you once again have a period and then start the pills the SUNDAY following the first day of your period.  After that, you will get your period at anytime after you begin the "sugar" pills,(the last set of pills in the 4th week of your pack.)  Hope this helps.  Good luck!

Another thought, if you havent had your period in 4 months since giving birth, you may want to the doctor.  This is slightly abnormal.  It usually only takes a month or two.  Just as a precaution, make sure you are not pregnant again, this happened to my stepmother.
